Tropical Fruit Discussion / There's always a first time.
« on: April 03, 2018, 10:52:34 AM »
My patience finally rewarded!😁 After at least 3 years of waiting and wondering if my jabo and miracle fruit trees would ever give me anything for all the tlc I gave them.

It's a Bombay mango. Height is about 6.5 feet from the ground. If pugging is recommended, about what height?
Thanks!

Looking to buy a couple, 1 for me, 1 as a gift for family member. There's a place online that will ship (not bare root) a 3-gallon for about $80, with free shipping. Is that a decent price?
Thanks,

Hi,

This Honeyheart has only given me about 5 fruits per season. The tree is about 5' tall, maybe 4 years old. I haven't really done much to it, basically just let it grow on its own. So now I've decided to prune it properly. First step was to strip off all the leaves. I have no idea which branches to remove. Please look at the photos.

"A" has some of the larger branches numbered for easier reference.
"B" shows some drastic pruning. Is that too much? Should I aim for something in between "A" and "B"? Which of the numbered branches should be removed?

What is your recommendation?

Thanks for your advice,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anybody using Black Magic Coco Coir mix?
« on: February 12, 2018, 12:14:50 PM »
https://www.homedepot.com/p/Black-Magic-1-5-cu-ft-Coco-Coir-Mix-1010192640/206672985

They had them discounted to $4.00, so I grabbed a couple. I figure I'll add some more perlite and it's good to go. Would like to hear your opinions.

Thanks,

I have an ambarella that is in a 10-gallon plastic pot. Last winter, the height was about 6', the roots were already growing out the bottom and into the soil. I didn't want to cut off those roots, so it was left outside. The winter weather caused all the leaves and most of the lateral branches to fall off. Underneath the bark, it was still green. Since then the tree has grown to about 10', lots of new growth, looking great at the moment, and it even has 3 small fruits (never fruited until this time). I think the root system is pretty well established in the ground by now. I don't know if I should cut them off and move the tree to my heated greenhouse, or let it suffer again outdoors and regrow next spring. Which would cause more damage: cut off roots and move indoor, or let it be?

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What's going on with this pineapple?

There appear to be multiple buds, do I get rid of the smaller ones and just leave the largest one? Is this normal growth?
Thanks,

I notice that on my annonas and wax jambus, the previous season's leaves seem to stay on a long time. I've never done anything about it. However, this past winter, i cut off most of the leaves, and now am seeing lots of new flushes. My trees are not that tall, 6' and under, so it's not that hard to do, but i can't imagine having to do this if they are much bigger. I don't know why the old leaves don't want to fall off, or take too long to do so.

Too much flowering and too few leaves.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anybody using 55-gallon drums for planting?
« on: February 26, 2017, 05:06:42 PM »
I may have access to a couple. Not sure about long term suitability for planting. For sure it'll be immovable without mechanized means. Maybe I can cut it off in half to make it easier to handle. If I get them, I'll make a ton of holes for drainage, and let the roots go to the soil below. Since it's so large, a potting mix that's long lasting is a must. Would like to hear feedback on anybody who's planting in large containers. Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / "Thai Lessard" A. squamosa.
« on: December 21, 2016, 04:15:41 PM »
2 years ago I got a smallish one from Top Tropicals, have kept it in a pot ever since, right now it's in a 5--gallon rootpruner. I've gotten 1 fruit/year  ;D, I removed all flowers except for one. I also never had to hand pollinate. Love the taste, and would like to plant out some of the seeds. How long do you think it'll take for it to fruit?
Thanks,
Trung

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Paging Oscar (fruitlover): durian question.
« on: October 09, 2016, 01:38:05 PM »
I just saw a video clip by Lindsay showing that she received some fresh durian mailed via USPS from Hawaii. On several occasions, I've bought fresh durian from the markets, but I was never sure of the quality, many turned out excellent, others a waste of money. I was wondering if you have any on your farm that you are willing to send?
Thanks,
Trung

Anyone has reconditions for cultivars and where to buy from? I'm open to online ordering as the next option.

Citrus General Discussion / Can grapefruits be grown in containers, and

be reasonably productive? Also what's the sweetest variety?
Thanks!

For me, I classify guavas into 2 types: white flesh, best eaten when still crunchy (don't wait for them to get soft, though I know many who prefer for them to ripen and become soft), and colored flesh (pink, red, yellow,...). The colored ones are not really edible when unripe.

This tree here has been in the ground for 3 years, not a single flower, let alone fruits. The leaves are thinner, and rounder, compared to my other guava trees that have all fruited (their leaves are more pointy, and thicker). I'm seriously thinking of cutting it down.
Thanks,

Before I planted these, I read that they're not very edible. Today I tried some, and found that they taste very good, just like the "real" dates, just  that the flesh/seed ratio is very low. Right now I  only have fruiting guavas and jujubes, so anything is better than nothing.  ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What tree do I have?

Not sure what happened to my post, so I'm reposting it.
I lost  the label to this tree, can someone ID it for me?
Thanks!!

Temperate Fruit Discussion / What's bothering my cherry tree?
« on: September 13, 2016, 10:57:48 PM »
Part of the leaves are dried out. Anything you can think of? The tree is Stella cherry, I just got a handful of fruits earlier this year, in the same container.
Thanks!!

I have 2: a 5'er and 3'er. Both in containers for 2+ years. Slow growth. I've read that they don't like full hot sun, and can stand temperatures down to the low 30s F (my zone). Is there any realistic hope of them fruiting in containers? Should I plant them in the ground?
Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How is Cherry if Rio Grande in a pot?
« on: August 12, 2016, 04:33:22 PM »
About 3 years ago I bought one from Roger Myer after he gave me a few fruits to taste. It's been in the ground ever since. Growth rate has been slow, no flowers ever. I believe that my alkaline clay soil is to blame. I tried gypsum and soil acidifier, no improvement. I'm thinking of putting it in a pot so I can better control the soil mixture. Does this plant do reasonably well in a pot?
Thanks,
Trung

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My first "Cat" mango.

Not a huge deal to most of you guys, but I'm pretty happy. 😀 About 2 years in the pot. I got rid of all other fruitlets and just kept 1. Most likely will transplant to the ground next year.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / What kind of Prunus is this?
« on: August 05, 2016, 05:53:37 PM »
I was visiting a public garden in Stockholm, and plenty of these fell from the tree, so I ate some. Definitely some type of prune. Taste is a mix of sweet and tart, quite enjoyable. The fragrance is different from any plums I've had in the US.
Thanks,
