Any idea what is causing them to look like this? The tree is in my greenhouse.
Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / How to pollinate mangos?
« on: January 23, 2015, 12:52:29 PM »
I moved all my potted mangos inside the greenhouse, and with the warmer environment they've put out a bunch of panicles. I'm assuming that since there are no insects flying/crawling around, no fruits will set, is that right? Or do mango panicles not need pollinators?
Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / June plum: cold protection needed?
« on: December 02, 2014, 08:28:47 PM »
I was planning on bringing this inside the greenhouse, but the roots have dug down to the soil below. I'd rather not cut them off if the tree can withstand outdoors low temps of 40s in the upcoming months. It's about 12' tall. Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Do you guys pollinate your atemoya/cherimoya?
« on: November 28, 2014, 10:24:25 AM »
I have been doing it, seems like most (all?) of you as well. My sister in law has an atemoya tree that she totally neglects. I was under the impression that southern California doesn't have the necessary conditions for natural pollinators. She lives in the city of Garden Grove.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What are these "eggs" in my container?
« on: November 24, 2014, 05:32:26 PM »
My growing medium (Thanks nullzero!) consists of perlite, coco coir, and bark. I get great drainage and the plants are healthy. In one of the pot, I saw these white eggs. Of course ants are always around, so I'm not sure it that's related. What do you guys think these are? Do I need to get rid of them? How?
Note: some of the larger white masses are perlite, the ones near the eggs are kinda fuzzy material.

Thanks!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Why does this happen to avocados?
« on: October 22, 2014, 10:06:53 AM »
Got these from Costco, they were green and hard. So I left them on the counter for a few days. They felt soft enough this morning, cut them up, and the inside is "spoiled". What caused them to go bad?
Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Why do my persimmon trees keep dying?
« on: October 13, 2014, 11:50:33 PM »
I will not give up, but I need help. Over the years, I've lost maybe 4 of them. I've watered them a lot, a little, they still died on me. I guess I haven't figured out the correct amount. How do you take care of yours?
Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / What kind of avocado is this?
« on: October 03, 2014, 12:31:42 AM »
My mother just gave me a couple, she got them from a supermarket named "Mother's Market". It' s a good size fruit, taste is kinda bland. The label says California Organics avocado, product of USA. It's not bad, just doesn't have the fragrance, or "fatty" taste that CA Haas is known for. I've only had CA Haas, and like it, so that's my basis for comparison.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question about Miami/south FL lodging.
« on: September 09, 2014, 10:25:14 PM »
Hi,
Our family will be visiting the Miami area in a couple months. I'm looking at hotel, VRBO, condos,....but not sure what area of Miami to avoid. Can some local people give me your opinions? We're not looking for Ocean Beach, or anything high price, touristy, crowded like that. Just any safe, family friendly neighborhood. Maybe my memory is failing me, but I remember there used to be an Off Topic section of this forum where I can post questions like this.

Thanks a lot!

Looking to set up something portable for the cold months, will put away after use. I may not be home for several days at a time, so the greenhouse & plants will need to be in survival mode somewhat during that time.
Here are some pros and cons that come to my mind:

Backyard pros: free sunlight, easy irrigation setup since it's outdoor, lots of room for the GH.
Backyard cons: the windows/vents have to be automatic somehow, otherwise the plants will cook during the day, can be windy, more cost for heat source at night.

Inside the garage pros: no wind to worry about, no overheating issue during the daytime, less costly to heat.
Inside the garage cons: need to provide artificial lighting, irrigation can be an issue (how to set up an automatic irrigation indoor)

I'm thinking of getting a plastic GH (ebay, amazon, harbor freight,...). How do you protect your "fragile" plants?
Thanks,

My Hasya has a bunch of fruitlets for the first time!  ;D Do I wait for the pot to be completely dry before watering (for my current weather this means once a week), or just maintain a constant damp level (a little water every other day)? The soil drains very well.
This is for a 7-gallon container.

Thanks,

My 10' tall Bing cherry tree has been a disappointment, only a handful of fruits per season. It's been in the ground for about 5 years. Vigorous growth, but barely any fruits. Can anything worthwhile be grafted to it? I'm contemplating getting rid of it.
Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Fertilizer question.
« on: July 17, 2014, 07:26:44 PM »
A seasoned gardener once told me to just use Foliage Pro 9-3-6, fish emulsion, seaweed extract on my container plants. I use this combo every 2 weeks. Sometimes I throw in some Osmocote Plus on the soil surface. Do you think this is OK? Anything else better than what I'm doing?

No affiliation. I bought from them before, everything healthy and well packaged.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Any heat damage from the last 2 weeks?
« on: July 13, 2014, 12:47:13 AM »
I was gone for a couple weeks, the Haas and Fuerte avocados didn't like the mid 100s temp. I was surprised to see all my mangoes, potted and in ground, did fine, no sign of heat stress. http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a67/delldude/20140712_200259_zps4zu0howw.jpg[/img]

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango from Senegal.
« on: July 02, 2014, 01:18:38 PM »
I have a mango that came from Senegal. I'm planning on germinating it after eating the fruit, just for fun. Does anybody know what kind of mangoes grow there?
Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Air layering guava?
« on: June 16, 2014, 03:56:30 AM »
Thinking of doing my first air layer on my parents' tree. A few years ago, I dug up one of the younger trees that sprouted around the mother tree and planted it in my yard, it died. Does air layer have a good chance of success on guava trees? I watched a couple you tube videos, but still need all the advice I can get from you guys. Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is this Coc mango tree getting too leggy?
« on: June 14, 2014, 01:00:39 AM »
It has grown 20" since I received it about 1.5 months ago. I'd like to have a more compact, bushy form. Is it too soon to "pug"?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Will Solo papaya fruit in a pot?
« on: June 12, 2014, 05:08:38 PM »
Mother in law gave me a 1-gallon triplet. I really like the taste of Solo papayas, so hopefully I'll get some fruits next year. If I plant them in a pot, I can move it indoor during the cold months (Dec, Jan, Feb). If there's no hope of fruiting in a pot, I'll have to plant in ground and provide protections when the cold months come.
Thanks,

I bought a couple one gallon pots of papaya, each has 3 plants in it.
