I haven't tried a lot of varieties, but my favorite is Sugarcane.

Thanks all for your advice.

Warren, do you have this cultivar in your garden?

Thanks Rob,

Do I need to change the watering and/or feeding routine from now until the fruits are ready? Don't wanna do anything that might cause the flowers to not set or the fruits to drop.

My patience finally rewarded!😁 After at least 3 years of waiting and wondering if my jabo and miracle fruit trees would ever give me anything for all the tlc I gave them.

It's a Bombay mango. Height is about 6.5 feet from the ground. If pugging is recommended, about what height?
Thanks!

Thanks for seed offer. I can get them locally  from JF's tree.

You have to have pretty mild winters for them to flower and flourish. Even down here in San Diego there aren't that many. JF on the forum has a nice one in front of his house, but he is in a mild area of La Habra.

Yeah, I've seen that tree. It's a beauty!

Thanks!

Looking to buy a couple, 1 for me, 1 as a gift for family member. There's a place online that will ship (not bare root) a 3-gallon for about $80, with free shipping. Is that a decent price?
Thanks,

I have some cherimoya trees in full sun and then some that get sun until 1 PM only. I actually found one in partial sun produce much heavier than full sun. Again, sun/summer in So California is very harsh in summer that burns fruits exposed directly to sun. On taste, the ones in shade are more sweeter as well.

4 trees in full sun, 4 in shade, so my sampling is pretty accurate for my area.

I've noticed this as well. Full sun in my area, hot summer above 100, burn the leaves and reduce yield. This year, I'm gonna put some light shade cloth over them.

Thanks William,

I will check out the videos.

Hi,

This Honeyheart has only given me about 5 fruits per season. The tree is about 5' tall, maybe 4 years old. I haven't really done much to it, basically just let it grow on its own. So now I've decided to prune it properly. First step was to strip off all the leaves. I have no idea which branches to remove. Please look at the photos.

"A" has some of the larger branches numbered for easier reference.
"B" shows some drastic pruning. Is that too much? Should I aim for something in between "A" and "B"? Which of the numbered branches should be removed?

What is your recommendation?

Thanks for your advice,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Air-Pot question
« on: February 20, 2018, 05:09:09 PM »
I use both the root pruning pots and regular black nursery pots painted with the copper liquid. Upon removing the plant, I notice that the growth of the root balls are very similar. The paint-on liquid is way cheaper, but the pots do get real hot in the summer since they're black. The root pruning pots, although also black, have so many holes in them that baking the root balls is never a concern.

I used to get that a lot, with many of my seedlings of different seeds, not just jabo. I've since found out that it was due to too much water, causing root rot.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anybody using Black Magic Coco Coir mix?

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Black-Magic-1-5-cu-ft-Coco-Coir-Mix-1010192640/206672985

They had them discounted to $4.00, so I grabbed a couple. I figure I'll add some more perlite and it's good to go. Would like to hear your opinions.

Thanks,

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Chances of decent jackfruit from seed?
« on: February 01, 2018, 06:46:47 PM »
I have fruited 8 seedlings. Only one requires removal. One is excellent, top tier. The others are good. None of the seedlings resemble the parents. I planted 5 seeds from the same fruit, 4 trees fruited. They are all slightly different. One of the 4 was orange and the other 3 are yellow.  You can plant seedlings 10 ft apart and still get an ok crop. I planted some seedlings 5 feet apart. These trees are still young but one provided over 60 lbs fruit.

How many years from seed to fruit?
Thanks,

Should be fine. Mine is in the ground, it sees mid 30s every year, no issues. The only time it dropped leaves was when we had upper 20s, but came back in the spring. The only concern I have is that it doesn't fruit every year, last year it gave me none.

Best of luck Simon! My parents live in Orange, and are going through the same thing.  Hopefully your yard will not be too damaged.

Why not plant directly into the stone pot?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cherimoya season inSocal
« on: October 11, 2017, 06:24:51 PM »
Wow, beautiful fruits! I've discovered that the hot and dry weather here in Bakersfield scorched the leaves of my cherimoyas, and generally negatively affect growth and production. Whenever the weather is cooler, there'd be new growth and even the existing leaves look healthier.  I'm planning on putting up some frames with shade cloth for next summer. My atemoya, OTOH, is impervious to hot weather, or cold. What a trooper!
