I would start with any white sapote seed NOW planted in the ground where you want it to grow, you can multi-graft as many as you want this summer, the white sapote grows a very large tap root and will grow a lot faster /better if done this way."from my experience"                        Regards     Patrick

Great advice.

Also, graft something else onto the Bruce. Ross, Fairchild 2, Trompo.......something else.

LOL This is entertaining, do you have a youtube channel?

Nah. The forum is where the hardcore darksiders reside.

Whoa, Nelly! I take it your soil is a little too waterlogged for these guys?

I treat these the same as avocados here. I plant almost everything on giant mounds but this one is XL.

La Habra Blanc is the best atemoya this year.

Oh man. I need this! :)

Here is the premier episode of Will It Transplant?

Today's torture victim is a Casimiroa edulis aka White Sapote. This was dug up from the backyard and carried 120' to the new planting mound. Feel free to vote and I will update with pictures in the coming days/weeks.

Two rotted. One is going in a custom root pruning tall pot tomorrow! Now I just need to get some more seeds since this won't do me any good on it's own. What rootstocks work for making backups if I get this thing to sprout?

It may be worth it to order a massive amount of seeds but I have never used this seller so I would rather do a small order and then order everything I wanted that is in season if the first transaction went smoothly. He quoted $30 for Phyto certificate which I have never had to deal with before and $80 for shipping which is WAAAAAAAAAAY more then I have ever paid, although I haven't ordered seeds from Africa before. It sounded off to me.

Has anyone needed a phyto certificate to ship seeds before? I thought that was used for plants.

Phyto is not required for the US if you are using a small lots of seed permit.  ForestHouse will generally quote phyto docs (I think for $10 if I recall correctly) but will gladly take them off if you tell them it is not required.  That shipping price sounds preposterous from my previous orders from Cameroon.

Also, thank you for the insight.

That is what I thought. I have a small seed lot permit and was going to use it. They even asked for it in the first email which I saw as a positive.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Green sapote sun requirements in SoCal?
« on: December 28, 2017, 01:07:22 PM »
Give it full sun.

Mine is in full sun, no shade.
Deals with frost no problem.

Fruiting out of control, they're just dropping all over the place.
Tastes like sweet avocado!

I'm surprised about this -- I thought they were pretty frost sensitive.  What cultivar are you growing / where did you get it?

That's what everyone said about my atemoyas, longans, lychee, and a bunch of other stuff.
The best way to acclimate plants and trees is to help them transition from season to season slowly.
Not take them directly from one zone and expect them to survive in another region 2 zones below.

- Alano
- Black
- Suebelle
- Ross (Doesn't do well in frost, temps below 34F)
- Vernon White

I do not cover them unless it's less than 30F, I've had them for years and growing very well.
Come spring, they explode in blooms and its quite the spectacle.
Bought it from the local nursery here.

Do you have green sapote?

It would be a large padded mailer or small box shipped EMS.

Jackfruit has slowed down in Florida but there should be abundance in 6 months.

It sounds like he (Ferdinand) is gouging & playing games so why waste time with him?  Wirsiy at ForestHouse generally has good prices & is good to work with -- and he has a much broader selection of seeds (judging from the list above).  (I just got Christmas greetings from Wirsiy so I would say he is still around ...)

John

It's better to contact Wirsiy on facebook. He is often online so communicating there will be very much faster.

I didn't realize that was the person from ForestHouse. I emailed them a while back and didn't get any response. I am even friends with Wirsiy on Facebook. I'll shoot him a message on there. Thanks a lot guys.

6 fresh black sapote seeds. I just consumed this fruit so seeds are as fresh as it gets. Maher cultivar.

$6 with shipping included. Seeds sent in moist sphagnum moss and bubble mailer. USA only.

I should have more seeds available as these other fruits ripen. PM me if interested.

I have a nursery in Australia

www.helgasnursery.com.au

and am writing to recommended a seed vendor in Cameroon who has supplied me quality seeds including Jungle Sop (Anonidium manni)

His name is Ferdinand email: fermamo2002@yahoo.co.uk

He can supply a lot of hard to get plants from West Africa including:

carambola averrhoa,jackfruit,rubber seeds,theobroma
 cocoa,dracaena arborea,picralima
 nitida,cycas,iboga,thamatoccocus danielli,Voacanga
 Africana,yohimbe,pygeum,coffee,lepidota,annonidium
 manii,Annona muricata,kigelia Africana,irvingia
  gabonensis,Garcinia kola,kola nut,afromomium
 meleguata,moringa,grape seeds,cashew,griffonia ,rauvolfia
 vomitorea,elaeis guineensis,bilimbi,cananga
 odoirsta,mahogany ,camellia sinensis,,crescentia cujete,etc

that is a list he sent me.

Send him a email if you need anything from West Africa.

Thanks

Did you receive seeds from him? I got a quote on some seeds but pricing wasn't broken down. I may still order but it wasn't cheap.

My first thought was Sugar Apple. Papaya as well.

95
I just planted them directly. They haven't come up yet and I don't want to dig around to check for germination. The ones I bought 9/2016 were slightly sprouted and I gave them a little dip in mycorrhizae inoculant. I think these germinate readily. It is the shoot that takes it's time.

96
They spit out a large taproot that becomes tuberous and stores energy. There is very little lateral feeder root branching early on. Sometimes they will shoot and die back but leave the roots alone. They will shoot up another sprout eventually. This whole process takes months. I would keep some sort of humidity tent over it and keep it out of full sun when small. I have had good luck with Trade Winds Junglesop seeds in the past. I just planted three more that looked decently fresh and ordered 4 more that haven't got here yet.

97
You should have bought from 'ForesthouseCameroon'. They charge only 2$ each!!

Do you know how to get in touch with them? I emailed a couple months months ago and didn't get a reply.

I also tried to get in touch with them. They aren’t answering right now. There is another vendor from that area that is answering all of my emails very quickly. fermamo2002@yahoo.co.uk

I just sent them an email. Thanks!

Raul, Can you get seeds?
Yes Chandramohan but season is in May, just before the rains..

Looks like a hot commodity. I will definitely be on the lookout for your seeds. I even made an obsessive compulsive note on my computer a while back listing the season. hahahahaha Keep up the fruit hunting Raul!

Fruitscapes in Bokeelia have an excellent selection of Carambola and most other fruit trees. One of my favorite nurseries.
