Flat white paint anyone? Maybe painting some flat boards and lay them against the south facing wall at some angle. Easy to adjust and remove. The rate of reflection cannot compare to mylar / panda film though.

327
I must be searching with the wrong keywords on google images. Any photos of good outdoor implementation would be truly appreciated!

328
Thank you everyone, @Josh-Los-Angeles I especially appreciate the photo as I have a hard time visualizing angles!

My narrow lot is only 33' wide. Kind of contemplating to place light reflecting materials by the south-facing wall and direct some light to the north-facing wall. If the base is too far away, longan and lychee (in part shade) are about 20' away and may benefit from some boost!

Will mylar / panda film burn or damage nearby plants? Thanks again all!

329
I am trying to figure out if anything can be done to bring more light to the base of my north facing wall. I heard about mirror, mylar, and even solar panels!! Thoughts? Experiences? Concerns? Thanks a lot!  :)

I have my guava seedling demoted to the sidewalk. Navel orange extends over my fence and I'm fine with kids next door picking some of them. It's a tall tree, when they climb on my wood fence or even jump into my yard for the fruits I get annoyed :( Very soon I'll post the "smile, you are on camera" "private property, no climbing on fence" signs too.

I also read a horror story on a forum long time ago, someone with a very fruitful longan tree had fruit thieves visiting and damaging his roof badly...

331
The next day the tree is gone  ::)

332
We decided to remove the cactus completely and cuttings are sitting on the ground now. Let me know if interested.

333
LOL @ricshaw, thanks for sharing. I read it wrong the first time around.

I have found private blogs at wordpress very useful for keeping track and posting photos of my interests.

Any recommendations that is convenient from a smartphone app?
So I can snap a photo or two on my way out and then upload them when I have a minute :)

For the fruit trees, I handle everything except watering. And my father really needs a watering schedule or he will either water too much (everyday) or too little (totally forgotten). I plan to create a quarterly or yearly watering & fertilizing calendar and put it on his desk, so we are on the same page. Old school. Modern reminders won't work for him.

BTW, I plan to organize my yard photos and create a note for each of my trees / plants in Evernote, logging their progress :) Or maybe a private blog / photo album with tags will do.

... very rare and hard to find. Of course, I found one and it is in order.  ;)

Cough cough cough

I just measured the distance between trees and drew a diagram, hoping to convince my mom that the newly vacated space in yard can actually accommodate two trees, not just one...

Best of luck! In my local nursery, they display huge bilingual sign near the cherry trees stating the challenges planting them in our climate. Poor things.

When stumping, might be a good opportunity to add some other varieties to it as well.  ;)

Hahah! I was thinking grapefruit and lemon the other day! Not sure how well they get along though :)

Thanks for the tip! @buddyguygreen

I use opera mini on android, decent enough after you get used to the formatting.
Never liked the interface of tapatalk for some reason.

Many casualties in my gardens graveyard(compost heap) due to overpotting!

Thanks! I should not worry about 25 gal vs. 15 gal until years later then.

Repotting makes me very uneasy, probably that's why I wanted to start with large pots :/

I do put dollies underneath to help with drainage and to make them easy to move around for cleaning and other patio maintenance.

Dollies! Excellent idea :)

I have used plastic bags that cost me pennies, and plastic pots that came with the plants. Check craigslist...

OUCH on the precious lemon tree, hope you still managed to plant another one! Haha no indoor plants except phal orchids.

I once had a paper flower (bougainvillea) planted in heavy duty black garbage bag which in turn was placed in a milk crate. It was really mobile haha.

Yes I will likely get nursery pots in various sizes off craigslist.

...(potato grow bags) aren't that esthetically appealing but I tend to bury them to 90% in the ground during the summer anyways.

Haha that's an option too. I wonder if I should plant the berries in bags then bury them, to minimize the berries' acidic fertilizer from affecting nearby plants?

Truly appreciated @Viking Guy for your step-by-step trimming / training instructions!

Looking closely at the bark I get lazy and decide to paint tanglefoot directly on it @@

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Acidify soil for blueberry?

I've seen pine bark, chips, needles , peat and diluted vinegar work to acidify and make blueberrys happy.

Thank you! I am gathering pine needles... But they are slow, really slow?
I'll try the 2 oz per gallon water recipe above, maybe... er... twice a year???? (clueless!)

Bump, still available, happily gave away a third of the cactus already :P

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Size & type of containers for fruit trees?
« on: March 09, 2015, 02:33:54 PM »
I maxed out of the full sun and even the part shade yard space, at least according to the opinion of my mom, the boss.
But my wish list is still long and ever increasing! For all of you who grow fruit trees in containers, what size and type of containers do you use?

My containers would sit on concrete, saucer advisable? Not planning to move them often after settled, once a year at most. May plant them in the ground later to replace other trees, so a nursery pot would be easier to transplant from? I cannot decide between 25 gal and 15 gal, the bigger the better but those pots are harder to handle / come by...

Trees I have in mind for containers: pakistan or white mulberry, pickering mango, dragon fruits, papaya, more loquat & avocado... Pierce cherimoya lucks out and will have a spot in the ground.

347
... before my wife transplants me LOL

LOL, if I continue getting more trees (and I will, ouch) my mom may want to transplant me as well!

348
better earlier than later, so you get to choose a better tree :)

I found the following from an ebay product description for 30 lbs of ferrous sulfate:

Quote
This product is used to correct iron chlorosis in plants
Reduce alkalinity in soil and as a mineral feed suppliment for livestock
We use this product in bulk for a variety of agricultural uses.
As a soil applied fertilizer or nutrient: Dissolve 2-4 dry ounces in 1 gallon of water. Coverage is 1000 - 5000 sq. ft.
As a folier application: dissolve 1 dry ounce in 1 gallon of water.

Hmmmmm... Still not sure how often to apply.

Yes Kohala is much larger. Kohala is a very tall upright tree. It's best to top them otherwise fruits become unreachable and tree gets out of control.

Thanks! It looks innocent right now. Should I top the tree only when it grows tall, or should I start training it this year / next year? (I am ready for pruning it every year or as needed)
