Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Red longan in Ásia
« on: March 07, 2017, 01:05:11 AM »
the video is a tease. no video of the fruits being cut up as far as what i saw.

correct me if i'm wrong, but does it seems like it's not as productive as the other 'workhorse' longan varieties?

This variety is very popular in indonesia lately. You can see hobbyist and backyard gardener posting pictures of the tree on facebook groups.I will try getting some pictures to post it here.If lucky i will try asking them about photos or videos of the fruit being cut open. Not sure about the origin though

Awesome!

visiting this tree should be a must-see for every person from hawaii.  if you ask the typical hawaii person what kind of mangoes are there in the islands.  they're either going to say:  common, haden, (white) pirie, and idk.

let me see if i can get some. might not be in season for seeds yet.

my last trip on Air Asia was from Bali to Singapore.  The guy next to me on the plane was a guy from Netherlands who had to keep fanning his feet.  Ugh.  Plus several days in the Bali sun and no showering only to be compensated with extra cologne.  Ughx1000

They are large portions of the country that are off limits to foreigners.  Unless you are planning to break the law, which I highly highly recommend not doing, who knows what is out there.   Great people, my favorite place in SE Asia.

those areas seem the most interesting, but you're right.  not going to get in.

oh well.

Didn't find anything in Myanmar that you can't find in Thailand. In fact Thailand has a lot more selection and quantity of fruits. But Myanmar has many beautiful places to visit, so still worthwhile.

oscar, what's your hunch on the 'jungle fruit' you'd find in the markets outside of the cities?  i imagine especially places where it is still restricted, there may be some interesting stuff to share back home?

Good luck to you. Hope you find something interesting. I"ll be going myself with the wife next month. Will have an APHIS permit just in case!

@oscar.  If you were to return back, what things would you be looking out for especially in YGN?

Yup.  Gotta get as much seeds started as I can.
If you can graft then i can send you either male or female scions. That way you need only have one tree in the ground.

Amateur on avocado and mangoes.  Haven't tried on garcinia yet.  Will have to practice on something more comparable.

Got seeds last year. Only 2-3 inches tall.  Is that normal? They're in pots in shaded area btwn the houses so only get direct sun around noonish

I would imagine that they could flower in a 15gal. Pot.  You are going to need more than one flowering to get fruit.  I have two groups of four each.  There's only one female in one group and two in the other.  The other project I know of here with cherapu in production also has experienced a lot of male seedlings.
Peter
I have same experience with more males than female plants.
Like mangosteen you can get cherapu to fruit in a pot. But ti's much easier when in the ground, especially if you want to get good quantities of fruits.

argh. i'm running up against space constraints.  but will keep this in mind.  :(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / growing cherapu in pots

i know bigger the better, but has anyone tried growing cherapu in pots and if so, what size pots are you letting them grow and actually fruit? Maybe Micah does this?  So far, just have one larger seedling in a 10 gallon and the small ones are in 2 gallons for the time being.

Oscar you mentioned fruiting was in April/may.   When did you start seeing the flowers pop out in Puna?

Couple of the original five I bought from you are about 1.5 tall in the pot and looking nice so far.

172
got mine from oscar.  would offer you some of mine, but not going to fruit for a ways off.

173
Probably your busy, but please don't forget my order! :)

Damn birds like all my Eugenia except for pitangatuba.  Thankfully they haven't discovered the power of miracle berries.  Damn them.
