Tropical Fruit Discussion / Growing cashews in containers
« on: May 02, 2015, 01:22:58 AM »
Anyone tried growing cashews in a container?   Any insights?

fruit leather will fix all shipping mishaps!

Also,
I wonder how many people on this thread religiously watch TV or follow sports?

It's my firm belief that these activities fill your brain with useless information and details, leaving less space in your brain for valuable data.

idk adam..get some REALLy good dramas on Netflix!  But the main thing at the end of the day is if I order something from you, it is the right thing!  I label my things with masking tape and a sharpie.  there are a few things I have mixed up already....some heirloom tomato varieties. so will have to grow out and see what it is!

@flyingfoxfruits.  Are there different cultivars of pitangatuba?  Also, the ones I picked up from you, I intend to put in a pot (maybe later on in the ground), but what is the expected turn around time for it to go from 5-10inch seedling to fruit bearing?  Can't wait to try this guy out.

Congrats!  Now u need the website updated!

Hi,

How long doe the marula seeds last? Saw some on Tradewinds Fruit for sale.  Also, how are they doing growing in your containers?  Sucks that it's dioecious....but thought it was interesting to see that you can tell male/female seeds by the holes.    I'm always game to try something someone highly recommends!

was just browsing your site Oscar...it's been a while...but I must admit, your website is probably the best source for tropical fruit seeds.

I need to update mine one day  :-[

this forum has turned into my website.

Thanks Adam. I've added a lot of offerings to my seed page lately. It's been really hard to keep up with all the orders, especially now that spring has sprung. Maintaining a website is quite a chore. Often i'm up till very late making changes on that website. Somebody compared building a website to building a house, and its a very good analogy: the work is never finished. Always something needs to be repaired or remodeled or improved. I'd like to add growing information about all the new seed species added, but i just don't have the time right now. Maybe some day.

The HTML code looks pretty straight forward, simple, to the point  on your website Oscar. Can be a good thing since, its easier to fix something that broke on it, but a lot of people this day and age like pretty simplistic websites that scale easily on smart phones and tablets. The website does not work on my mobile phone (and most likely tablet).

Have you considered using wordpress or webflow template to make the website? (I know a lot of templates are cookie cutter, though a good portion can be modified adding a good unique look). Advantages would be can add some nice updated graphics, database, and mobile usability to the webpage). I would look into webflow, my friend has a website development and marking company (I believe he recommended webflow to me for diy website template).

Hi Nullzero, thanks for the recommendations. I know my website is not mobile friendly. And i have no plan to make it so in the future. Please if you want to surf it use a laptop or PC. You won't be able to see most of the photos very well on a 2 inch screen anyway. I have too much work as it is, at least for right now. If business goes dead at some point i will consider doing what you say. Right now i'm still a one person company, so there are limitations to how many things i can do.

sounds like there's an opportunity for an internship in that statement!  The main thing is at least you can search your site on an iphone!  Besides, it's easier to hide the fact I'm buying seeds from my wife! :)

633
Compared to the other species how does this one stack up flavor wise? Never had any before

634
good to know!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Guarana seed germination rate
« on: April 22, 2015, 01:47:53 PM »
Looking to buy guarana seeds from Oscar.   I know they have a short shelf life but if u get them in a timely manner is germination rate Near 100%?

636
pitangatubas (Starcherries as I like to call 'em), are starting to ripen up!

still a few weeks before the mother load...but the first few fruits are always welcome.

I'm looking forward to letting people taste these!  (too bad they don't ship well as fresh fruits)

Awesome!

what color tea do they make?

any other advice on growng yacon?

639
Oscar these may be stupid questions but here they are anyway :

When you planted your trees what percentage males to females did you end up with ? I assume you started from seeds ?
Is it possible that there is even a slight difference in the leaves between the 2 and could males be more vigorous than females ?

I have 7 that are doing very well and need to go in the ground when the rainy season starts .

On the contrary Luc, very good questions. Unfortunately i don't have very good answers...yet. Not all the trees have flowered yet. It seems that there is a high percentage of females. I have 9 trees and i think at least 5 are female. Strangely enough in this species all the female trees flower first. Yes i started from seeds. Don't know about differences in vigor or leaf shape between the sexes. Haven't paid much attention to that yet. Usually i'm overwhelmed just trying to keep the place mowed and weeded. :-[

man if I lived big island, I'd intern at your place.  but my wife would get mad and tell me, 'how come you go his place mow lawn and no do ours?!?!?!!'  oh well.   ;)

Yes you're welcome to mow here anytime. But i think you're going to find it ain't no "lawn". A bit bigger and taller than any lawn you've ever seen.

Ha.  If I can get comped a mango here and a marang there my wife may put up with my "volunteer " work!   :) :)

bought mine from frankies summer 2013.  maybe 2 ft tall. now is 3ft tall...so maybe 4-5 years old at least?  no fruit yet.  ugh.  but the way it stays small (at least at my house), it makes for great edible landscaping if it ever bears fruit.

too bad about them eating your fruits. on the upside, I'm sure they must taste super ono!

I know the wild boar that raid the guava, mac nut orchards taste unreal. my cousin feed for 8 months a herd of pigs on stone cookies from mountain view bakery and barrels of papayas.  trapped 'em all and had a wonder luau. meat was heavenly.

only recently Oscar have I discovered your website.  it's like backyard gardening crack for me.  buy what I need thinking that's all I will need...then I learn something else on here and realize, ooh I need that.  then I'm back calling up the dealer for more. ha ha ha

I will have to figure out where to plant it out, but I may have to order again shortly. the idea of having readily available caffeine is too tempting.  ha ha ha.

645
so are you pureeing (sp?) everything in the blender minus the seeds?
in about 6 years, I will do this when I get my first jaboticaba harvest! ha ha ha

Sounds cool to have.   Plant next to my coffee tree to have a "caffeinated" garden section!  Haha.   How long does the vine live?   I read it likes acidic soil.   Any other tips for growing it successfully?   How long more is the guarana season before can't buy any seeds?

Is ziman pink a dwarf cultivar?

idk if it's a dwarf by definition, but supposedly easier to keep smaller than some of the other varieties.  At least that's why I bought mine.

Administrators, I apologize if this is the wrong place to post. If so, please delete.

I have a bunch of large pots that I would like to get rid of.  100 gallon ($30) and some 25 gallons ($15) as well as some 10 gallons ($6).  I live on Oahu (Palolo Valley).  So if interested, please PM me.  Sorry, won't ship out.  I could probably use all of these myself, but I promised the wife to do my best to get rid of some of these!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Ziman pink jackfruit leaves
« on: April 13, 2015, 01:24:42 AM »
Planted my ziman pink jackfruit in the ground in October.   It's defienitely alive and all but for some reason it seems the  shoots that are green and ready to turn into a leaf dries up and shrivels away.  A friend told me to make sure I just water the base and not soak the leaves.  I notice a few more shoots turning into leaves but way lessthan I anticipated.  Any other tips on what I should do?  Tmwr morning I'll take some pics.
