Tropical Fruit Discussion / Polyembryonic sugar apple seed
« on: January 23, 2013, 03:55:01 PM »
One of the Kampong Mauve seeds I got from a fruit from mikesid's house turned out to be polyembryonic. I have 3 shoots growing from one seed. This is the only one out of about 50 seeds I planted that has done this. Hoping it stays strong and grows up like it's parent tree to give me some good fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / cogshall mango blooms
« on: January 23, 2013, 03:49:37 PM »
To those that have Cogshall mango trees, there is luck for us this season. Doing my walkaround this morning, saw my newest growth had blooms starting on the end of it. The rest of the buds are super swollen and ready to push any minute.
new growth with blooms on the end

Very jealous. My two mauritius are both a year away from seeing any kinda blooms. They do have what looks like new growth buds coming out, but pretty positive they are not blooms.

My NDM#4 (7g) and pickering (3g that has been in a pot since may and very bushy) are both blooming, my lemon zest (15g) buds are all swollen, but my cogshall (7g in ground since may) still looks kinda dormant.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sri Kembangen blooms!!!!
« on: October 28, 2012, 02:49:07 PM »
Went outside to do the daily rounds on the trees, and found my SK carambola had some blooms on its lowest branch. Very excited about the blooms, and these are the first ones since I bought and planted it over the summer. Kinda perplexed as to why the blooms are on the lowest and smallest branch my tree has... any ideas on why that is?

a couple of the guys at one of the fire stations in boynton beach planted a CC mango and an unknown cultivar of avocado a couple months ago, both 7 gallon. just checked on them and the CC is still looking fine and healthy with no wind damage, although another thread on here talks about that... but the avocado snapped above the graft from the strong winds.

Just wondering if anyone that is on here is in the caribbean and experience any damage to their trees from this storm. Pompano has had gusts in the high 50s tonight, with the strongest weather supposed to be happening tomorrow. OF COURSE I am on shift tomorrow and wont be able to watch after all my new plants and trees, just hoping nothing snaps...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Repotting Miracle Fruit
« on: September 21, 2012, 06:13:22 PM »
I can't suggest a potting mix, but I can angree that partial sun is the way to go with miracle fruit. I had them in a pot in full sun for the past 3 months wondering why they weren't getting any taller than 2 inches. Sure enough, once i put them on the east facing side of my backyard where they get about 4 hours of sun in the morning and shade all afternoon, they are now 5 inches tall in a matter of 2 weeks.

(Copied from the Cloudforest)

Get ready for a onslaught of new members around Christmas. They made a movie based on the book The Fruit Hunters with Bill Pullman. Slated for Fall 2012 release.

hopefully with so many new people being interested in tropical fruits, a few fruits can break into the produce stands in the big name super markets instead of just small road side stands and nurseries.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / keeping a mamey small
« on: August 28, 2012, 12:34:32 PM »
I've searched here and on google, and have found mostly nothing on how a Mamey Sapote would do being kept at about 8-10ft tall. Do they respond well to a yearly pruning to maintain a small size? Or would the pruning make the trees produce less fruit?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Hurricane Isaac Aftermath Thread!
« on: August 27, 2012, 04:56:44 PM »
While driving around at work and doing damage assessments around Boynton, several major roads are under water, 6-10" deep. I have seen alot of pine and oak trees down, alot of palm tree limbs down, but every major mango tree in my zone is still standing. Anxious to get home and see how my carambola is doing, only been in the ground 4 months.

Hey everyone, my name is Cody, been reading on here for a while after mikesid showed me this site. Born and raised in Boynton, ever since I was little I wanted to grow plants and trees that would repay me with edible food. I started off with peppers in pots, and then learned that mango trees did not all have to be 60ft tall and taste 'ok'. I have a pickering and a cogshall mango in pots right now, cogshall I will be putting in the ground soon. SK carambola and 2 mauritius lychee are in the ground, bangkok lemon jackfruit is in my frontyard. just gutted an 80 ft strip of cluster palms in my backyard so that I could put some new additions to my collection. As for work, I am currently working for Boynton Fire with mikesid. Looking to learn more from this community and add what little knowledge I might have. :)

I had a couple of them on my pickering and cogshall mango tonight. They completely covered and killed my green pepper, jalapeno, banana pepper, and cayenne pepper plants. nothing on my carambola or lychee, though.
