Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Wax jambu ID problem
« on: June 21, 2017, 01:46:44 PM »
Looks like you have some soil born fungus problem and the mottled damaged young leaves are probably thrips damages. In So Cal, they look like mosquitos and hang around branches.

52
Seedlings that show these symptoms are already goners. I suggest you sprout the rest using the ziploc method. Wrap the seeds in moist paper towels (not wet!), put the whole thing in a ziploc bag or anything similar that would seal in the moisture, and put the bag on a heat mat or somewhere warm. After 1 week, check every 2-3 days so as to catch the seeds when they just start to pop open and sow them or else the roots will curl up and it will be a crap shoot when you sow.
And when you sow the seeds, keep the soil moist but not wet and NO fertilizer until you get at least to the 2nd/3rd flush of leaves. These steps work well for me.

53
Probably seedling rot / damping off due to Phytophthora and soil remaining too wet for too long.

The fastest grafter of the West is at it again. Nice one, Ethan.

@Cgameprogrammer. Majority of all my trees are mail order from Florida. Only trees I have grafted myself is an Alphonso, NDM, and one of the Mahachanoks. Good luck with your trees.

So, I suppose they are on turpentine rootstocks and growing very well at your place. If that's the case, we might be trashing turpentine as rootstock in So Cal for nothing...

Let us know how it tastes.

Should I start fertilizeing ?

I would test the soil pH first to make sure it's not way too high to prevent correct uptake of already available nutrients.

Looks like you have nutrients deficiencies issues which could also come from soil pH. Photo #2 looks to be a severe case of potassium deficiency.

I'm aware of mango seeds not allowed allowed but scions were. I got my permit 2 years ago when scions were still allowed. But now they just decided that anything Mangifera is not authorized. Another change is that the site inspection is no longer free.

Finding longkongs would be enough for me. Along with langsats and other dukus, they are top on my list of all time great. My own personal taste, of course. :)

Mango seeds not allowed. Let us know how your trip turns out?

It seems that anything mangifera is no longer allowed. I recently apply for an update of my post-quarantine permit and the mangifera that was already there since 2 years ago was removed with this explanation "...Mangiferia is not authorized into the US (7 CFR319.37-2a)...".

My spy (wife) just left Bangkok and told me that Maprang is in season in Thailand and neighboring countries. You might also find some Longkongs.

I grafted a Giant Mexican Sugar Apple onto a Cherimoya rootstock and I noticed this liquid oozing out of the tape
...

This is most probably a problem of overpowering sap flow. I have had this many times before and reported it on below thread.

What part of sd do you live? Please advise me what scion I should get. I like very sweet, chewy one. Which one I should get

Frank's Calostro will send you to heaven.

I don't know if the orchard is open to public or not. Peter is a well known cherimoyas grower and seller on this forum. Contact him and if he's not swamped and you're not rude, he will reply.

65
Try the Moyas guy, Peter from Park Hill Orchard in Escondido. He has a collection of saps and sells them too. His email could be found on this thread:

Warren is correct. Flower buds on my grafted Ah Ping started a week ago and now it looks like LZ's turn.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Why are my soursop leaves so small
« on: January 21, 2017, 03:46:20 PM »
Generally, zinc deficiency is one major cause for leaves that are much smaller than normal. High soil pH could also bring about this deficiency among others.

No weather (rain or frost) damage or washout on this 2 pounder...
...

Something tells me you got a nice surprise from Peter too, Rob. And don't know about you, but I think Peter has a better crop this year compared to last year in terms of quality.

Yes, kudos to Peter! He has a small crop this year but it's compensated with quality and big size. SCREC might want to source from his orchard for the next tasting and onward! :)

I spit out Nata and Santa Rosa.
...

This year Peter's Santa Rosa is up there with El Bumpo and Pierce in terms of taste and size. It has a perfect balance of sweet and tart with a little bit of chewy texture that I personally like. This is also my first Santa Rosa over 1 lb. Growing condition and timely picking matter.

Wow Thera!  That could be used as a weapon.  Is it common for Pierce to get that large.  My Pierce is too small to fruit yet, so just curious.

This is my first monster Pierce. I've never had one beyond 1 pound.

Just got nice surprise from Peter, a giant Pierce. This should compensate for not being able to go to the SCREC tasting this Friday.

You didn't mention if you let the cuttings dry out / heal up first before planting, maybe that was the problem. I let cuttings heal up from the cut in the open for a week before I plant them or send out to people.

Here are a couple of crosses with the Lottery results in 2 years hopefully. Notice the difference in leaves forms depending on which is the mother tree.

47-18 x PM (from JF).

PM x 47-28 (me). Some iron/sulfur deficiencies here and the current rains don't really help.
