Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Making changes after this freeze
« on: February 07, 2018, 12:43:34 PM »
The video is a return stack. Where they are lighting it the lid has a series of vent holes.  We always set to two holes as that gave the most heat for the least fuel

When the stack turns red you have more heat sent sideways than other choices.

Try to get the stack caps as well to keep rain out. Some come attached.

Recieved two paw paw trees today.

A Gainesville #2 and a Mango cultivar.

I also have a soursop and going to try to get both it and paw paw to fruit in same yard.

This should be fun but odds say no.

I cut back Lisa’s CC yesterday and cut about half off.   A smaller tree might not have made it. Others hit hard was the fruit punch.

On the other hand my juicy peach looks flawless even though trees planted at same time around it all have leaf and/or twig damage.

54
With the sweet tart and coconut cream already the O2 makes sense

Difference is good and the flavors are way different

A juicy peach perhaps but it widens our fast.

Smaller trees if only those fit

Fairchild
Guava
Pickering

Plant a sweet tart and you’ll thank me later...

My 0-2 took the cold better than the fruit punch if that is a concern.

You might want to try Illama and Rollinia as others in the same family more suited for your area.

Had a big bloom on my Young before cold hit

Up till the 4th day of cold they made it.

Southeast side of tree still has bloom

Fruit Punch next to it had all blooms frozen

The East side of Orlando is normally warmer. But they had the same air system as Jacksonville. Titusville had ice storm in middle of day and it was thirty when tv said it was 39.

Lisa’s longan burst the bark on second year tree.  Both of our properties are similar distance from hwy 50

I was getting rain from the west that first day

That east storm she got drifted off the east coast and hit NY

Very unusual pattern for my friends to the east.

Return stack heaters are the way to go

The radiant heat is greater with less fuel.  Use fuel oil in them

With all the citrus gone should be able to pick a few up cheap and they may be some abandoned you can clean up

Our school gave an excused absence to kids that fired groves the night before. Acres lit up at once was a sight.  Getting paid to skip school was great also.

Set up in a pattern they do well in lower wind conditions. They radiate heat well for moderate winds.

Avocado or atemoya would also work

Depends on how big you want

About 35 feet mostly up.

If it has a problem it sets too many fruit to the point of whole limbs shearing off due to load. No pollinators

It's still beat up from Irma but pic taken today

My brogdon is a big one and I supply several neighbors  with fruit

Makes great guacamole and this year they were wonderful but wanted to add to the season so new types were planted a couple months back.  I do like them turning color so you know which one is ripe and they are bigger than some other cold choices that I am familiar with

I haven't had any mid twenties in a very long time, knock on wood. But with those temps a brogdon is a pretty good choice

Wurtz is smaller and easier to cold protect if needed or planted closer to a building with its smaller size

Lots of choices out there, good luck

Bob of all your choices which one is the best tasting or your fave?

I planted a Brogdon as it could handle the cold but it taste a little eggy at times.

This past season they were wonderful and creamy due to heavy rain

Just planted a Lula and Wurtz and a Day is coming.

Oro's aren't as cold hardy

I just finished covering up as I expect with clear sky's and temps dropping it likely means frost.

Even if it isn't as cold it can frost things.

I have flowers on small trees i could cover and big ones I cannot. Compare those with the ones that aren't in flower so should be a learning experience.

Clear today so if breeze dies tonight with clear sky's it will be ripe for frost.

I didn't cover much last night but am for tonight

I built a 10x5, foot deep bed out of lumber and filled it with peat and pine bark

I refill with pine when it breaks down

Have to make sure you don't get ph adjusted peat as you need all the acid

Ten years of berries and counting

My Young, Nam Doc Mai and Fruit Punch are blooming

Usually get first bloom in late march or later

Cooler up this far, lows recently have moved more toward the mid 50's and go up or down from there.  We usually have one to three days of temps that reach freezing.

I didn't cover anything last year without any  damage.  But if I get flowers and fruit this far up and reach full ripeness I will be surprised

Going the limit on two lane road listening to a toe tapper on the radio when I come to a hill and curve

Just over the top of the hill I see that 3 by 6 inch safety flag dip below vision on the other side

Just in time to slow down before I hit the fifty bikers

One second slower I wouldn't have time to stop

Road is next to West Orange Bike trail

Which was empty of riders and just thirty feet from the road

It's the shorts

Too tight to think

It's one thing when they pick fruit you waited for years to try

But getting the whole tree makes you start all over

Landscapers with shovels on hand most likely suspects.

Plant another ahead of the rain and I hope you have better luck

72
Tried little gem this season and not a fan

Juicy peach is growing fast and perhaps the cleanest tree of my recent plantings
