Wow! What variety of Jackfruit is that?

Lucky you! Your mango trees definitely don't look like they went through a hurricane!

I have never heard of Orogone pyramids, what purpose do they serve?

Good Luck to you, Mike. I hope Bender's Grove makes it. I stopped by your place and bought some Keitt mangoes from you almost exactly a year ago. Be safe.

I need some help adding pics to my posts. I have been able to add images in the past but the "add image to post" and "insert image" are not working for me now.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Insect ID?
« on: June 04, 2017, 03:09:36 PM »
Anyone know what kind of insect this is?

About a month ago, I saw a couple on one of my citrus. I haven't been home much since then so my plants have been neglected. This weekend while inspecting all my plants, I found these insects on almost every plant but there are no more than 3-4 per plant. They are almost always on the trunk/stem of the plants, not under the leaves (except for the one in the picture).

I thought they might be whiteflies but these things are 8-9 mm long, not 2 mm like whiteflies.

Don't know why the images are not showing up. Could use some help with that, too!

Cookie Monster - 80 trees on .6 acres!  I see that I have seriously underestimated how much I can grow on half an acre. I thought I would be lucky to fit 30 trees in that space :-)

Spaugh, Fruit Freak, Frank - thank-you for all your suggestions. I will confess that it is all Greek to me. Hopefully with a little research it will start to make sense.

Do you know what size pipe your meter is?
I don't have a clue.

MrTexas - the landscape stones is a good idea. Your irrigation suggestions are a little more familiar to me than Spaugh's because I have installed a Rainbird irrigation system for my potted plants.

Thanks again, everyone. I will look into everything suggested here.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions.

FruitFreak, Kiet - the builder has said that the landscaper would be willing to work with me to lay out the irrigation but the sod has to go in. Apparently, they cannot get a Certificate of Occupancy without it.  Mulching the lot instead of putting in sod, is a no go. So, I will work on my tree layout when we get closer to the landscaping stage and at least have the irrigation part done to my satisfaction. I guess, I am just going to have to deal with digging the sod up.

Bsbullie - the property is not/will not be part of an HOA.

Mark in Texas - the lot belongs to the builder. He is selling it to us on the condition that he gets to build the house. The landscaping (sod, irrigation, etc.) are all included in the price of the house. The variety of grass/sod they will be using is part of the contract and so I have to go with that. Considering, I will be digging quite a bit of it up, I decided it was not worth the hassle to fight over what kind of grass to use.

Boxturtle - the lot is .9 acres. There are some big trees on the property that I would like to keep. I am assuming once the house and pool go in, I will have about half an acre left to plant fruit trees, vegetables, flowers. So, I will have to narrow down my wish list. I would need a lot more land to plant everything I would like to have!

Cookie Monster - No HOA! One of the things I really liked about this lot, along with the fact that it also had everything else on my checklist. I will check out the Sennigers. I have a lot of reading to do about irrigation systems. I am not very familiar with the set-ups. All of my gardening is done in pots that I hand water or use a Rainbird drip irrigation system for when I travel.

I am in the process of buying a new home. The builder will be putting in sod and an irrigation system. Does it make sense to go this route if I plan to plant quite a few fruit trees? I feel like it is pointless if all I will be doing is digging holes in all the newly laid sod to plant my trees. Any opinions?

Also, is an irrigation system set up differently for a lawn as opposed to what would mostly be trees? If so, then would it make more sense for me to plant my trees and then put in an irrigation system?

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Ok. I did not realize that you were only looking for seeds. I threw out hundreds of seeds a couple of weeks ago after I plucked all my Calamondin fruit. Wish I had seen your post then!

14
River, you will find calomondin plants at most of the Lowes or Home Depot stores, even Walmart. They are very common, specially here in FL. You should be able to get one fairly cheap.

15
Isn't Calamansi another name for the Calamondin? If that is what you are looking for, it is available at any big box garden store or nursery.

16
I have got a number of requests for the seeds. I will try and spread them around as much as possible in the order the requests were made. Thanks!

17
A forum member from California has mailed me seeds of a Cherimoya and Atemoya cross. He calls it Super sugar.
Unfortunately, I have very limited land and don't want to devote the space or the the time to growing it here.
If anyone is interested in experimenting, I will be glad to pass the seeds on to you.

Thanks, to all of you for your suggestions. Fruitscapes has them for sale.

Brev Grower - Any particular reason you don't like the Barbie Pink Guava?

PM239 - How old is your plant? Is it a seed grown, cutting grown or grafted plant?

Thanks, PM239. I have not called ECHO yet. I will check with them.

Rob - I was hoping people here who already have the plant might be able to share where they bought it.

I have called some of the bigger nurseries but no one seems to have it.

Anyone know where I can buy one?

21
Thanks, Josh. Yeah, I won't make that mistake again. I just hope I haven't offended him to the point that he won't sell me a plant.

Luak - glad I am not the only one that made that mistake :-)! I am guessing Wayne is probably really irritated with emails he gets inquiring about the 'Dream atemoya'.

22
I am looking to buy a plant and found only two sources for it. One being Flying Fox where it is listed as an atemoya (currently sold out) and the other being Wayne Clifton (recommended to me by a couple of posters here). I emailed him to inquire about availability and got a message back saying he does not know what a 'Dream atemoya' is, he propagates 'Dream cherimoya'.

The posts I have read here refer to it as a Dream atemoya. But, it feels like I insulted Mr Clifton by calling it an atemoya which was certainly not my intention. So, atemoya or cherimoya, which is it?

Thanks.

P.S. - I am not pointing fingers and do not want to start an argument. Just trying to figure out the confusion in the names.

« on: September 20, 2016, 04:39:50 PM »
If it is a small tree, spray it with some slightly soapy water and wipe of the scale with a sponge or leave the soapy water on for a few minutes and then use a forceful spray of water from the hose to knock off the scale.
My sugar apple tree was covered in scale and I basically washed down the whole tree with soapy water to get rid of the scale in March and have had no scale since then.

The seedy nature of them is why i never bothered planting them out...until i found good varieties.

Which varieties would you recommend?
I checked out Adam's website all of his A. Squamosa are out of stock, except for "Na Dai". He does have seeds for Big Red, but I am looking for a plant. All his Atemoyas are out of stock too.

I don't know how to get in touch with Wayne Clifton. Does he have a website?

Dom - I am very new to the "fruit world". I just started last year with a couple of bananas, a couple of guavas, a fig, a sugar apple and a bunch of citrus. The sugar apple was the first fruit I got to pick/eat. I have a few Meyer lemons that will ripen in the next couple of months but other than that, nothing!

I want to get more sugar apples now since I really like them and the plant was pretty easy to grow and fruit. Hoping to add a few mangoes and a couple of lychees early next year.

I don't know anything about grafting except what the word means :-)
