Grapebush - I've clicked refresh before and it has always given me the same error. I tried it again today after reading your comment and it works. Strange!

Where did you buy the Elite Gold, White Jade and other pineapples?
Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Questions about Sugar apples.
« on: September 12, 2016, 04:32:31 PM »
I bought a very small sugar apple tree from an Asian lady at a farmers market last year. She had no idea what variety it was, only that it was green not red. The tree flowered and set fruit this year. I hand pollinated 8 flowers hoping for two fruits, but got 7. I got rid of one when it was very small because it was deformed and left the others. I realize I probably should have got rid of most of the fruit since the tree is very small/young but I just could not. It is my very first fruit tree to fruit!

One fruit was ready to pick last week but the others are still quite small and do not seem to be growing anymore. Do you think I should get rid of them or wait a little while longer? How long is the sugar apple season in FL?
The ripe sugar apple I picked was very sweet and had a ton of seeds (60!). Any guesses on the variety?
Also, I am thinking of planting the seeds for a few more trees. Do sugar apples come true from seed? Or, do they need to be grafted like Atemoyas?
Speaking of Atemoyas, anyone know where I can buy a Phet Packhong (sp?) Atemoya and also a Big Red sugar apple?

Thanks!

My first fruit!

Smaller sugar apples not growing anymore.

Nice looking fruit!

How did you get the pineapple plants started? Are they any particular variety?

Hi Gary, I sent you a pm.

Thanks for your suggestions wonderfruit and Fisherking.

Fruit and Spice Park is definitely on my list of places to visit but I cannot do it this trip. I will be staying in Plantation and for reasons I'd rather not get into, I need places to visit that are within a 20 mile radius (max) from there.

Any nurseries in the area worth checking out?

Hi Rob,
Maybe orchard and nursery are the both the wrong terms to use for what I am looking for. I am not planning to buy any trees on this trip. I just wanted to visit some places where I can get to see what the size of various fruit trees (mango, sugar apple, mulberry, lychee, etc.) are at maturity and the growing conditions in a home backyard setting rather than a big commercial nursery.
But, if the only recommendations I get are commercial nurseries in the Ft Lauderdale area, then I will go check those out.

This is more of a "looking" trip. Will be doing my buying on subsequent trips.
Thanks.

I'm looking for recommendations on orchards I can visit around the Ft Lauderdale area next weekend.
The only one I am aware of is Bender's Grove.
Suggestions?

P.S.- Can't do Pine Island and others around Homestead this visit.

Totally depends what you mean by variety and where you live.

I live in Tampa. By variety, I mean 6-7 mango trees, a few bananas, a couple of lychees, longans, guavas, papayas, a few other tropicals and some citrus. I also would like to keep some space for a vegetable garden and some ornamentals.

With proper pruning techniques, you can grow ultra high density fruit trees in something as small as a quarter acre and have more than 50 varieities in that space.

If I could manage this, I would be in heaven! I am new to FL and growing fruit trees, so I have a lot to learn, that includes proper pruning techniques.

Question for those of you that have multiple mango, lychee, banana and other fruit trees growing. Do you all have 1 or more acre lots?
I am trying to figure out just how much land I would need to grow a variety of fruit trees.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is this Rajapuri Banana?
« on: June 14, 2015, 12:40:54 PM »
I posted a similar question a couple of days ago. My tree that I bought at a fruit plant sale looks just like yours and was also labeled Rajapuri. From checking online and input/pics from Geosulcata here, I have come to the conclusion that my plant is definitely not a Rajapuri.

Thanks for your response. It pretty much matches what I have read so far. The plant I have has much darker green leaves and a few markings. I am guessing it had the wrong tag on it. I bought it at the Manatee Rare fruit sale.
I recently moved to FL and am very new to tropical fruit gardening. I have no idea if it is a tissue culture. The banana was the first plant I bought.

Thanks again!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Question about Rajapuri banana tree.
« on: June 12, 2015, 03:54:43 PM »
For those of you that grow Rajapuri bananas...I just read that the Rajapuri banana trees have all green leaves but the one I recently bought has reddish-brown markings on the leaves. Did I end up with a mismarked tree?

Thanks for your help!
