A fruit for every month is a great thing to have. Favorite February crops?

I'm interested in following this to see how things develop. Hopefully they can get a handle on it and there wont be too much damage.

If you're in Southwest Florida you need to go to Pan Tropic (John Painter's place) on Pine Island. He grows a lot of jackfruit varieties, many of which are his own crosses that are by far the best available anywhere. Sunrise and Topper are both excellent. I've been growing out seedlings of these in hopes that they will have at least some of the qualities of their parents.

I know John well, discovered his place 8 years ago, I try to swing by when I can. He's got an amazing place. Well worth a tour if you can talk him into it. I only get down there a few times a year now, as my family keeps me busy any time I get down there.

I was just playing about the cleaning, who likes latex. :/

Is there a difference in taste between different color flesh?

Also, when is our "ripe" season? I've always steered away due to the pain in the ass factor in cleaning them, but I suppose I should get around to trying one.

Cleaning them is half the fun!

I would check the figs4fun forum but someone was just telling me all the lsu varieties are going great for them.

Rob is correct that taste is subjective.  I also enjoy the taste of Bangkok Lemon; my girlfriend said she will stick with mangoes.  I cleaned my first Bangkok Lemon Jackfruit last night.  Like Rob said, it had a good recoverable flesh ratio and relatively low latex.  The rind in the center seemed somewhat large compared to some other jackfruits I have cleaned in the past, this was probably in part because my fruit shape was round, like a small beach ball.  This is just one; it may not be representative.  I estimate it was 20 lbs, but I didn't weigh it.  It produced a lot of recoverable flesh and was low in latex.   I have another one that needs to be cleaned, about 8 more are on the tree.   The Bangkok Lemon tree was planted three years ago.

Color is subjective.  I personally don't care about the jackfruit flesh.

Dr. Richard Campbell has a book on Jackfruit that may help in selecting a variety, which you may be able to get on interlibrary loan at your local library.  You can also find it on amazon.  The University of Florida also has a publication on Jackfruits online, but many of the newer varieties were not included in either of these publications.

Any pictures?

Thinking about making a purchase of 1 or 2 jackfruit trees. Any recommendations? I'm located in South West Florida. I'm guessing 3-4 years to fruit from a 3 gallon, though I've seen some saying they got fruit from seed in 3 years.

I've never been able to enjoy Eugenia uniflora. Almost scared by it. Every time I've had it its been bitter and kind of metallic. I dont want to misjudge an entire genus though. Recommendations? Am I doing it wrong? They are such awesome producers. I want to meet a Eugenia to love. :P
