We have one that was 4ft when we got it, it's about 9ft now and constantly pushing new growth year round. It's been just over a year and a half I'd guess. Still a fairly thin trunk. Inch and a quarter roughly. So I could see it getting quite large if unkempt.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anybody using 55-gallon drums for planting?
« on: February 27, 2017, 05:29:12 PM »
I bought a lot of them..Each one $ 10. They are strong and huge. Cheap for the size. So far I only have one breadfruit in those pots. But I am using them as wall in low greenhouse

Also curious,  thats an amazing price!

Its a really attractive tree though! I like the serrated leaf edges!

Went and had a closer look at the tree.  Its covered in blooms.  Should have the little fruits/seeds in a couple months.

Saltwater intrusion would be my concern with the 2" well on the property. Maybe send in a sample for chemical analysis before you use it on anything you care about. Any modern well drilled on PI shouldn't have an issue as long as you get a good driller and have a pvc double cased well (The requirement on barrier islands.)

Where are the trees in F&S, I don't recall seeing them but I g et they could be an amorphous blob of trees by the other mulberries without a label? How do your trees look these days Flyingfox?

57
They look cool but will definitely return to that spot again and again.

I have had low germination rates from Theobroma cacao and have 2 young seedlings with 3 others that didnt make it (birds got the strongest of the second batch and the other two aborted very early). I'm hoping to try growing bicolor soon as well (I should probably make the seedling I have happy). Is there any recommendations on how to make the seedlings and seeds stronger? I've read that cacao likes very high humidity so I might start there with the seedlings. Best practices for germination and fertilization welcome and desired!
 Thank you.

There is a 20+ ft fruiting Cuban Mangosteen at echo in ft Myers. The fruit is only OK. I would plant only if I had a lot of space.

What time of year does it fruit down there? Its been  7 or so years since I've last been at Echo.

Yeah it's just a stinkhorn mushroom that looks like an alien egg filled with crap. They smell truly awful too, once they warm up in the Sun!

Strip and prune right away. Hit it with super bloom (grow more 0-50-30 so you get significant bloom by April and hopefully fruits in sept .

What brand do you use for super bloom?

Is it a full facility tour or just a tour of the mangoes?

I saw that Russian listing on ebay. Its a really impressive plant. I'm curious to see if they will be able to get it to fruit at F&S.

I'm seeing heavy mango blooms from St Pete south to Sarasota at least.

I've noticed heavy mango blooms at far north as St Pete. I'm hoping the rest of the winter is gentle enough that fruit set isn't affected. So far we haven't dropped below 44 and even that was for only a handful of hours.

I got 5 on it! Lol, sent.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Water source for FL
« on: November 26, 2016, 06:28:10 PM »
Groundwater in Manatee, Hillsborough, and Sarasota counties are all fine, just Hire a knowledgeable well driller. There can be pockets of salt water but an experienced local licensed well driller will have a pretty good knowledge of the water tables in the aquifers. I work with well drillers daily but my professional experience is in Sarasota*.

If you go in season around the Loop Rd in Big Cypress National Preserve just off US41, you will pass hundreds of wild trees, may out of reach in the water but easily 60+ on the roadside banks. I recommend just cruising and looking for fallen fruit. Yields aren't bad at all. Many spindly trees have 10+ fruits with 1 or 2 on the ground around mid august but early September is probably the ideal time. All the fruits I had were pretty tasty but incredibly seedy.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best Tropical Fruit Books
« on: September 19, 2016, 09:52:58 AM »
Hey, I was looking around on the internet and on the forum, Any recommendations for a Lorenzi style book on Asian fruit and nut identification? It seems like the quality and quantity of books drops pretty greatly once you cross the Atlantic. Most of what I've seen for Asian ID is pretty fluffy without much detail or diversity which I know doesn't reflect the actual case of  species diversity in that region. Can some one offer up some recommendations and prove me wrong. Thanks in advance and sorry for bumping this 3yr old thread back up the board. Any other books people want to add that were released in the last 3 years would be welcome too. :)

I would say books and fruits hold about equal footing in my heart.

Who's the grower in Bokeelia? Are they selling trees too or part of their personal collection?
