Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Graft mango question
« on: June 28, 2016, 11:59:21 AM »
Thanks Simon; I also removed the branches from my root stock, but I don’t have the luxury of waiting for my scion to start to bud before grafting since I get them from other states. :( So I figured the sooner I graft it the better. I guess I just have to be patient and have better luck! :)

Thanks for your response. I was trying to post a picture of my other graft but I can't (dont know why because I had done it before) :( there is plenty of space between the tip of the root stock and the tip of the scion, maybe its just my luck. :(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Graft mango question
« on: June 27, 2016, 09:56:06 AM »
This question may be clear for many of you, but I haven’t found the answer yet.
Does it matter what time of mango do I use to graft another onto it?
For example, if I have a manila grafted mango, can I graft Valencia Pride or Lemon Zest on it?
I know that there are some variations in growth but if I want to top off the manila and just let the scion grow will it make a difference?
I know that there are the Indian family of mangoes and the ones that we get form Mexico. Can those two be put together?
I am just trying to figure out why some of my healthy looking grafts didn’t take on a perfectly good manila and one that was turning a bit yellow grafted on a Raposa it’s growing.
Used same cleft graft and clean between cuts. Is it luck or what I am doing wrong? Please help! Thanks! Xenia

I have the same problem, but just don’t buy on line I but from Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart, private sellers in Craig’s list etc. etc. or people give me fruit trees because they know I am a nut! But I think my hording practice is cheaper than buying clothes or jewelry (at least I want to think so) Thrust me, you are not alone in this forum! :)

LOL what an awful description of Carrie's mango! I have never tried it, but I had a mango last week that taste like turpentine! So I get it.

I agree with you Cookie Monster, I can eat them all day long, the problems is to time my trip to El Salvador when they are in season. I love the fact that they are crunchy, but I agree that the seeds are a pain. I wished my seeds had grown, but I guess that is like the Olosapo fruit a total holy grail for me. 

Hi, there are a lot of videos in the net if you type "how to graft peach/ or apricot trees?" in the search place. I find them very informative, but I like to see several because some are more detailed oriented than others so you will learn more. Good luck

I am to far away to do that, so my other best choice is shipping. :(

Hi!
I will like to buy some mango fruit this year from different sellers. I ordered some from mango factory last year but, they have a limited variety of mangoes, so if you know of someone who has more mangoes that they can eat and want to sell me some please let me know. Thanks!

Can you bag them? maybe that way the critters would leave them alone. :)

Zambezi, Thank you, and thank you for all the time you took to put all this information together for me. It’s a lot clearer now. I think my little Carrie tree it’s ok, the first branch from the Carrie  it’s one foot from the ground, so I will be cutting it off. Overall the rest of the branches are at 30” in height. It also has 5 branches on the crown so I think I will also remove the middle branch from the top so it will only have 4 lateral branches. (I hope I am right, if not please let me know)
I took at stab at grafting mangoes this year, the only one that took is a LZ, I made the mistake of grafting the Lemon Zest on a Coconut cream, and on top of that I used the middle branch to do it! For what I now understand (maybe I am wrong) Coconut cream grow slowly and laterally, and LZ are a lot faster growing.  Should I cut it off now?  LOL……. It seems that I have long, long ways to go before I am trusted again with some poor undeserving plant/tree.
I measured all my other trees and they all start to branch out at about 3.5 feet above soil. So I think I should leave them alone right?  
I tried to post pictures, but I couldn't  this time. I don't know why because I have done it before. :(

Thank you Zambezi, and all that answered my questions.
My little Carrie is planted in the ground, the three that I have in pots will probably will have to remain in pots for now. I watched the videos several times and I think you are right, I have to do it now that they are small and trainable. The other questions remaining are; in the video the Dr. says he wants them to start at “His” hip height, I don’t know how tall he is and his height may be different than mine, so is that a 2 -3 feet height?
I am concerned because the other 3 mangos in the ground have their branches starting at about 4 feet height so I don’t know if I have to cut them lower and start new branches to keep them at a desirable level.
What do you suggest I give my Keo Savoy for food? I must admit that I have not given them much in terms for fertilizer, just some cow manure this spring. 

I have practically filled my place with plants and trees, so, when I walk my dogs on my back alley I look a people’s backyards and see the wasted land with nothing but some rocks on them. I start to imagine what and where I would plant there;  I keep looking at this house that is not much bigger than mine, but has double the yard space with nothing on it, and keep  hoping  they will put it up for sale so I can try to buy it and get  to work on that yard. I live in Phoenix AZ and there are few places with irrigated acre lots in town, and well out of my prize range at the moment, but I keep dreaming that one day I will be able to find my acre lot, and all the trees I could put in that space. In the mean time I just slowly but surely talk my kids into letting me plant some trees in their yards since none of them are gardeners, So far I have manage a couple in each house, but there is time and space. …….. So my plot continues. 
My kids are the ones that have to come to my place and water it for me when I go on vacation, I leave them specific instructions on how to do it and for how log. The last time I left I even left them a sing in sheet so I would make sure they did it.
Frankly, they have tons of patients with me, but since they grew up digging holes for me in the back yard and picking weeds out the yard as punishment they already know I am plant crazy. I don’t think this madness will end for me anytime soon, maybe as I get older and I am not able to do much I will slowly cut down; in the mean time I enjoy declining  invitations to lunch on weekends because I have to take care of my garden. :)

Finally people after my own heart!!
I am not as hard core as some of you in collecting certain plants, or seeds but I can't help but wanting more and more. :) my late husband used to tell me that if there was a flat spot I would put a plant on or on top of it. :)
For years I collected seeds that I never grew, it was almost compulsive! I would go by a tree, bush or see a seed floating by and I would collect it, put it in empty pill container and label it, with some label like " pretty yellow flower blush from the alley behind my house, and date it"  The funny things is that after reading the label I would remember exactly the moment I got it; not very scientific, but never the less I did it for so for many years without much thought; until one day cleaning my laundry room where I put all my seed treasures, I realized how many I had and for long, and started questioning the reason why? My conclusion is that, maybe in another life It was my job to do so, or I am a crazy hoarder of seeds and plants! And frankly I like the first alternative better. 
My back yard, front yard and house are saturated with plants, I not just like Tropical fruit I love it!, but I also like cacti, orchids, or anything plant related and alive with or without pretty flowers, and even though Cacti flowers only last one day open (for the most part) I am the crazy lady with tons of beautiful pictures of my cacti flowers in my phone, along with my grandchildren’s pictures,  crazy no?
And, I could also tell you the story of where each plant came from, "oh, this one I got from someone who was growing in it in his front yard and I knocked at his door and asked him to sell me a piece. “or "I took a piece of that one when we went for a drive in the desert with so and so." And this one I bought from HD when it was one inch tall, and look at it now 5 feet tall!” etc. etc.
My friends tell me that I should work in a nursery, but that has never been my inclination. I love to grow little plants and give them away to people, that would care for them or learn to take care of them because they liked what they saw in my house.
Growing for walks in nurseries it’s an enjoyable pass time for me, I not always buy plants, but if I find something interesting, you bet that it’s coming home with me! After many years of marriage I finally trained my husband to not buy me jewelry, flowers or stuff for presents, just to give me a plant and I was thrilled! I remember the poor guy came home from the grocery store one day and said “look what I found for you!” It was an orchid painted blue.  At first I said commented on its unusual color, but after a moment I told him “it’s not real, it’s painted” he didn’t believe me, I showed him the label and he still didn’t believe but the next year when the orchid bloomed again I showed him the real color was white.  I was happy none the less because it was a live plant, not pretty cut flowers.
Thank you for being here and making me feel not too crazy!

I have a few questions:
It’s very clear in the videos what needs to be done, but it pains me to do it! :(
I have a 3 foot tall Carrie mango that has 4 branches on it, 3 of them produced flowers but after a while they all fell down. Do I prune the tree branches as shown in the video so each branch would produce more branches or do I let them stay and get bigger? The tree is so small to begin with that I don't want to prune if not necessary.
I have also planted a Coconut Cream, a Piña Colada, Fruit Punch; all less than 4 feet. The Piña Colada has only two main branches after the graft, should I also cut it lower to produce more branches?

Plus I have a 2.5 feet tall Keo Savoy in a pot with two skinny branches that don't seem to have grown much after a year. Should I do also the drastic cut to make it bushier? I am a novice at this and don't want to kill or harm my little trees. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks XE

My late husband used to gripe about me occupying every flat surface of the yard or inside the house with plants, he used to say “If it isn’t in the ground it’s is in a pot, but plants are everywhere” So, one day I told him, “when you met me I had lots of plants and pets, if I don’t have them around I would cease to be me.  If I asked you to stop playing your music or reading science fiction books it would go against your nature, so I don’t.”
After that I never heard him complaint again, he even helped me dig some holes and put watering system and even planted his own shade tree one time.  

Yes I paid for two boxes because I have been waiting for EVER to get my hands of these fruit, I grew up eating the Inga Paterno and its seeds, but I don't know where to get those here in the States, so I make do with these and they brought back some good memories of my country of origin El Salvador.
The problem I have now is that there is a boat load of seeds that are going to waste if I don’t find them homes, there is no way I can plant all of them, so if any of you want any they are free if you pay for  shipping. Just send me a PM and we can arrange for shipping. I am keeping the humid with the hope that some of them will find homes. 

Thanks for my Ice Cream beans, I sat down and ate about 10 of them in one sitting. :) Delicious!
I also got a box of cherimoya from LocalHarvest, but I need to let those get ripe, so I was thrilled to be able to have something to eat right way.  ;D

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Apple Mango ????
« on: April 13, 2016, 08:56:51 AM »
Hello mango experts!
In El Salvador I used to eat "mango manzano/a" I don't know the correct name for it, all I know is that when it was green it was sweet, not sour like the other mangoes in the country, I never ate it fully ripe, but I need to know if any of you know what is the scientific name for it, and where I could buy a small tree.

And can anyone explain to me why my post doesn't show as "new" topic even though I press the "new" button? Thanks in advance! Xenia

Thanks for all the responses, I didn’t think I could, but I wanted "the experts" opinions.
I imagine that the easier thing to do will be to get an olosapo seedling and some olosapo scion wood, but I have not been able to get any seedlings or olosapo seeds for that matter. 
Since it seems that getting an icaco plant it’s an easier thing to do, now my quest it’s in getting olosapo scion wood and giving it a whirl......
I have never heard of intergenetic grafts but it sounds interesting, unfortunately there is not many articles on line or here that I could see. My horizons are expanding!

Any of you have any suguestions of where I can get the Icaco plant and the Olosapo scion wood?
