Wrap it up in chicken wire or a stronger type of wire. Lowes or Home Depot may carry cattle wire. $5-25 a roll. Or lay cardboard/newspaper near the trunk of the tree. Throw all of its poop on top of the cardboard. Your dog will most likely keep away.

How about we get a photo of the area (with dimensions) where you want to plant a vine fruit so we can see what we are working with here?

Hi everyone. I'm Xeno (pronounced Zee-no). I'm 24 years old and live in Ventura County, Ca. About a year ago I got the gardening bug and it's been going ok.

A list of fruit trees that I have:
Citrus:  Tango mandarin, Valencia, Washington navel, Cara Cara, Moro Blood, Tarocco Blood, Eureka Lemon, Thornless Mexican Key lime.
Stone: Anna Apple, Gordon Dorsett Apple, Mid Pride Peach, Arctic Star Nectarine, a 3 in 1 asian pear tree (forgot which varieties), Satsuma Plum, and Santa Rosa Plum).
Tropicals: Big Jim Loquat, white and pink skinned dragonfruit, Hak Ip lychee, Brewster lychee, Mauritius Lychee, Angel Red Pomegranate, 2 Wonderful pomegranates, Pink Satin pomegranate, and an unknown longan.
Etc: Heirloom tomatoes, Serrano peppers, Bhut Jolokia pepper, Brown Turkey Fig, Mission Fig, and Pepino Melon.

The majority of these are in pots. Wanting to get a Carrie mango, Timotayo mango, Black pearl Wax Jambu, Kajang starfruit, Giant Bangkok guava, Sapodilla, and a jaboticaba. Also would LOVE a jakfruit, just don't know where to put it. I'm here to gather information on how to grow near the coast. It's hard to find any info regarding growing tropicals in ventura county, even though I'm only like an hour drive north-west of LA county. I feel like I'm the only one growing tropical trees in my area!  ;D

The Timotayo was developed and grown in Camarillo so definitely a coastal plant.
fangiliscious
Yeah, but a problem that I am having now is finding a Timotayo locally which is near impossible. Sigh. I did get a Timotayo at Lowes for $40 but it was from La Verne and I believed it had root rot. Are mango roots supposed to be pitch black? I don't think so. It also had black spots on the leaves and new growth were turning black, so I returned it. And so now it looks like I'm stuck paying $90 for a Carrie. The things you do for mango trees.

I'm stuck in this predicament in which I desire to acquire a mango tree but can't decide which variety to get. I'm trying to avoid any trees by La Verne Nursery as I'm not too big on their high grafts. Don't want Manilla. The trees would be in 24'' containers.  I'm looking for varieties: Timotayo, Carrie, and Nam Doc Mai. I can't find either Nam Doc Mai nor Timtayo anywhere locally so I'm stuck getting a Carrie at the Mimosa nursery. It's tough getting any info about growing mangoes near a coast. Any one here have any info about growing mangoes near the Pacific coast?
