Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best Fruits for a School Yard
« on: April 06, 2013, 07:59:35 PM »
I'd like to encourage everyone to plant fruit trees not only in their own private homes but also in schools, churches, parks.
I'm gonna start doing this with my loquat seeds. And the best thing is when they start fruiting (in 6 years) all that fruit will be mine because nobody knows about loquats! WOOT WOOT! Go me!

31
And they were from named cultivars?
Vietnamese white giant and standard pineapple guava. The taste just doesn't fit well with me. I hate the smell of the white guava and when I eat it I later burp it up and the smell comes back.

32
have you ever tried a nasty feijoa?
Yes. All of them.

I'm not a big fan of eating guavas.

33
Ain't no rush to do mine Null. My cactus pad that I took from my girlfriends dad house is starting to sprout. I'm sure it would have sprouted much quicker but my pad is in 80% shade. I'd take photos but my camera is dead.

34
kinda off topic but how do you guys harvest the fruits? No matter how much I try to avoid the thorns, I always end up getting pricked on my hands and sometimes even my lips when I eat them.
I usually use tongs to remove the fruit from the pad. I then grab a long knife. I hold the fruit down with the tongs with one hand then use my other hand to grab the knife and cut the fruit. I work on removing the outer layer of skin and bam, it should peel off. Don't forget to compost the outer skin!

Lucumas generally arn't eaten out of hand are they? Isn't the powder used in milkshakes and other stuff like that. So get the dry easy to find kind. That's what I'm about to resort to.

37
I'd be interested in 1 of: Cerritos #2, Visalia Yellow, Torrance PCH#1, and Jeronimo M.V. Though Cerritos #2 sounds like the prickly pad I have at my house....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Jabo or feijoa?
« on: March 06, 2013, 12:14:22 AM »
First try Plant o Gram, next Pine island..then Rareflora.com. I bet you'll get one!  I think Rareflora has the biggest ones...Plant o gram might have the least expensive ones.
They only state just jaboticaba . I'm of course looking for the red jaboticaba. Are the ones Rareflora and Plant o Gram selling the red jabo?

that the jaboticaba has one great advantage over many other fruit trees...

it can be relatively productive even when provided minimal sunlight...A vital aspect to consider when pushing zone limits...as lighting will be a major concern for you...at least during the winter months
Great. Now I REALLY want a red jabo. Stupid California agriculture laws!

The highs are sometimes 75-95 and the lows are 46-54

What??I've been to SB in the middle of July and it been overcast and 65F most of the day while it was 90F in Orange County. Those temps represent Fountain Valley, Irvine or Santa Ana not SB.
Santa Barbara get hit hard in August and sometimes September. Anywho, have you thought about growing some mangoes!?! Or Jakfruit!?!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Bacon Avocado
« on: March 05, 2013, 10:29:31 PM »
The Bacon avocados I have had were very large, thin & smooth skin, with a very nice appearance and texture... but no flavor.  With so many great avocados (i.e. Haas) available in SoCal, it's a mystery to me how this one ends up in markets here.
Yup. It's kinda like eating textured air.

Like I've said guys I'm eating these fresh (I've eaten close to 18 of them)and these would not be my go to avocado. If I was surrounded by different varieties of avocado I would eat everything else first then probably save the Bacon for last. Not because I'm saving the best for last but because I'm sure they would be decayed beyond belief that I wouldn't get the chance to eat them!  ;D And remember taste is subjective!

Looking for opinions for those who have personally grown/eaten this variety (growth habit, quality of fruit, "make up" of fruit (texture, richness, oil/fat content, flavor etc.), size of fruit, and harvest season on this variety, especially from those who have grown it and/or tasted it (Florida grown).  Would also like to here opinions for the Cali peeps.
So I recently tasted the Bacon avocado and let me tell you this: I cannot fathom why anyone would want to eat this tasteless fruit. The only reason in my opinion why you would want the tree would be for pollination of other avocado trees. For the record I ate this fresh and did not use it as guacamole. I also bought it at a farmers market and have consume quite my fair share of bacon avocados. Bleh.

I picked up a 6 feet grafted tree with a 1.5" trunk for $23.  There are a few smaller ones left for the same price if anyone is interested.
That's a really good price. I believe I picked up mine for like $30+. I'll have to check my receipt.
I saw one at OSH in Burbank last night too. They had Timotayo and Keitt 6ft for $60. Is that a good price?
Home Depot/Lowes carry the Timotayo mango for $50 in the 5 gallon standard pots. So, not really a good price. But go for it if you cannot find a Timotayo mango at your local big box store. I know it's a very hard to find mango tree where I am located.

47
Great!....built in obsolensce - nice work LaVerne grafting team....!!!!
Crap. I hope I don't get crappy tasting oranges. I own La Verne citrus.  :blank:

48
So I take it that these only flower and produce fruit one a year correct? How long does the fruit hold on to the tree?

49
Hold on guys. The trunk is still good right? Is it black all the way to the graft point? Cause if it isn't it's still alive!
