Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passiflora ID
« on: February 05, 2018, 08:37:52 AM »
I noticed this vine growing on my Eugenia hedge.
Looks like a tiny passion fruit.
I remember the flowers being small as well, looked like a normal passion fruit flower but only around 1/2"

I just wanted to make sure it wasn't anything special before i remove it.
Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / cauliflorous mango

I found something interesting on my NDM, flowers coming out of brown wood areas.

Sorry for the blurry images, I've been having trouble getting the camera to focus on the flowers.

I recently bought a UF Best Peach from Home Depot.
It had about three tags on it all saying UF Best and one saying FLguard (rootstock)
So I'm pretty sure this is the real deal.

Anyways the cold made it drop leaves so now its time to prune.
I know I was looking for this variety for a while so I figure I should make scions available.
$3 per scion, minimum order 5.
Add for $8 shipping

No international shipping sorry.

Open to trades to PM for details

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Inarching Projects
« on: December 11, 2017, 02:56:25 PM »
I tried my hand at inarching on a sickly avocado tree that I transplanted one to many times.
Everything seems like it has healed up and the tree is looking a lot better.

Because of the success I finally decided to try Inarching my Mamey.

Here is a picture from early 2017, I planted the Mamey along with two Canistel seedling I had laying around.

Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of the area before grafting.
The Canistels grow quite a bit though.

The first Inarch was more like a veneer or approach graft. (the bottom only lined up on one side)

The second one was like a side cleft

Final product:

Well see in a few months if this takes.
I don't really know what time of the year is best for inarching as they seem to take a lot longer to heal the regular grafting.

Apparently Mamey doesn't like or limestone soil here so I'm hoping the canistel root system will help it thrive.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Recommendations for Post Irma Top-working?
« on: October 13, 2017, 09:06:16 AM »
Hey All,

My Dad and I began the process of top working three mature trees by my parents house.
Two Kents (one in front one on the side), and one Chocanan (backyard).

For the trees in the side and back I'm planning on putting Beverly and Lil Gem.

For the big Kent in front I'm still undecided.
I'm thinking, Delores, Nancy, Zill or Van Dyke.
As you can probably tell, I'm going more for production and general ease instead of flavor.
As long as they are in the same ballpark as a Kent in terms of flavor and season I'll be happy.

Varieties that are already on the property are: VP, Buxton Spice, Malika, Juliette, Rosigold, Rosa, Cac and a lot more seedlings that I will eventually top work.

What do you guys think? I haven't tasted Delores, Nancy, Zill or Van Dyke. yet

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Red Jaboticaba Hydroponic Project
« on: September 18, 2017, 11:36:33 AM »
Hey
I've been meaning to do this for a while but I finally started a jaboticaba hydroponic project.

I started it a few weeks ago but since I had to bare root and trim back this one gallon sized Red Jaboticaba, I wasn't sure how long it would survive.
It looks like its pushing new leaves now so this is good news.
All setup at my desk at work.

Here is how I'm approaching it:
The system I'm using is an old AeroGarden.
Filled the base with strained perlite and stuck the bare rooted tree(it looked like it only had a tap root) in.
Trimmed about 75% of the leaves.
Covered the extra openings with tape to prevent algae growth.
Using General Hydroponics Maxigrow solution until it rebounds, then I'll switch to Maxibloom.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Bender's Grove Post Irma Update
« on: September 15, 2017, 04:53:32 PM »
Hey guys just wanted to pass some information along from Mike Bender.

The grove was hit pretty hard a lot of clean up and down trees.

He'll be open this weekend (normal times).
Still doesn't have phone access or power so text is the best way to reach him.
Also only accepting cash at the moment.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Looking for Sturdy Banana recommendation
« on: August 18, 2017, 09:08:59 AM »
I want to put a banana patch on my canal bank.

Here are some qualities i would like.
1. Sub-acid component (want it to be different enough from Cavendish, I really like those apple bananas)
2. Sturdy pseudo stem (Don't want me or it to go in the canal)
3. Not dwarf

Pisang Ceylon looks good but i don't know how sturdy it is.

Anyone have suggestion?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / artocarpus ID
« on: July 31, 2017, 03:37:28 PM »
Can you guys ID this tree.
It looks like it could be multiple since there is more than one trunk.
Is the 3 lobed leaf a Jackfruit too?

The description of the mother trees fruit sounds something like a jackfruit hybrid.
Branch fruiting, not as big as jackfruit, easy to peel (like a golden nugget jackfruit)

I've been trying to get my hands on one of these for a while. It seems at least in South Florida they are hard to come by.

This was taken yesterday, I bought one so only one left
15 gallon, UF Best, $60, Sunrise (near Sawgrass mall) Home Depot

Came across the 2017 list recently. Didn't see any post concerning it yet
http://www.fairchildgarden.org/events-community-outreach/international-mango-festival/2017-curators-choice-mango-trees

The Siamese sounds interesting. I wouldn't mind putting a kastooree on my canal bank to see how it does with fungus.

Haven't seen a thread related to this topic.

The trees will have to deal with occasionally flooding.
Any suggestions?

Banana seem to fit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Suggestions for shade trees near the road
« on: April 22, 2017, 06:17:49 PM »
I had some plans for this area mentioned in a previous thread. The city just gave me a citation saying I need to plant a shade tree in the swale.
It needs to be 12ft.
I need to complete it by July.

Anyone have suggestions?

Don't really want to buy a 25 gal tree so if someone can point me to a tree that is vigorous enough to pass the eye ball test if I plant it now.
It helps if it's a nice looking edible. I was think tamarind or mulberry. Also if you know anywhere selling that would be great. Or if anyone has any really big seedlings.

Thanks

Just don't want to venture all the way down to Homestead.

Thanks

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Atemoya Pollinator
« on: March 24, 2017, 09:35:53 AM »
One of my Atemoya trees is full of flowers. I seen some little beetles inside them when I was trying to hand pollinate.
Are these pollinators?

Its really hard to get a good picture.
They only come out when i start messing with the flowers, I've seen 4 in one male flower.

They are about the size off a small black ant, just rounder.
