Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Winter weather Florida..so far so good
« on: December 15, 2017, 09:05:52 AM »
With this clod snap I'm expecting a decent bloom in a few weeks.
I got to start spraying sulfur soon to combat any powdery mildew.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Overmulching?
« on: December 15, 2017, 08:51:47 AM »
I recently dumped a truckload of mulch on some of my trees.
Its over a foot deep in some areas, no ill effect yet.
Just make sure to leave a decent space between you trunk and the mulch as you don't want to bury the root crown.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Inarching Projects
« on: December 11, 2017, 02:56:25 PM »
I tried my hand at inarching on a sickly avocado tree that I transplanted one to many times.
Everything seems like it has healed up and the tree is looking a lot better.

Because of the success I finally decided to try Inarching my Mamey.

Here is a picture from early 2017, I planted the Mamey along with two Canistel seedling I had laying around.

Unfortunately I forgot to take a picture of the area before grafting.
The Canistels grow quite a bit though.

The first Inarch was more like a veneer or approach graft. (the bottom only lined up on one side)

The second one was like a side cleft

Final product:

Well see in a few months if this takes.
I don't really know what time of the year is best for inarching as they seem to take a lot longer to heal the regular grafting.

Apparently Mamey doesn't like or limestone soil here so I'm hoping the canistel root system will help it thrive.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sugar Apple issues
« on: December 08, 2017, 06:41:43 PM »

My atemoya is looking like this and dropping leaves due to dormancy.

Unfortunately my sugar apple look like that the whole year. I don't know exactly what the problem is, I guess I'll try spraying copper next year.

Small as in loquat sized... You sure that is a mamey? Looks like a loquat and Loqu probably should have been Loquat.

Yes I was thinking its a loquat as well.

Down here I usually get vp July-August.
But it's a big tree so I wouldn't grow it if I was worried about the cold.

Let me know if you need any Budwood in spring. We'll work out a trade or something.

110
I'd say Pickering, Maha, honey Kiss possibly a rosigold for early season

Forum member JF has a lot of good varieties.
You should get some from him.

I have Calostra growing down here.
Plan to add a few varieties to my other plants as well.

Mine ( candolleana?) are about 3 millimeters, almost invisible, and tasteless.

A strange thing happen to mine a few weeks earlier.
Half of each tiny fruit turn black, at this stage I ate one and it didn't taste great.
Eventually they started to grow fast and those black spots stretched to red

Can you guys help me with this one? (the biggest one in center frame)

The ones adjacent to it is Garcinia intermedia, I can't seem to find my Garcinia brasiliensis so I'm hoping this is it.

He is a picture of a few fruit I harvested recently.
I found the more oval fruits have small seeds (like the ones in the picture) and the rounder ones have larger ones.

that's great sham. glad to hear. how tall are they now ?

Here is the biggest one that I have.

its in a 3 gal pot

As for your big tree, I'd be afraid to trim it now as it might adversely effect flowering.
If you don't mind that then go ahead and remove the dead dying stuff now otherwise Id wait for March or just do all the trimming after harvest.

117
I don't claim to be an expert on these things, in fact only a few trees in my yard are old enough to be considered productive.

With that said this is what I plan to do in a few years when the majority of my yard is producing.
(most of the information I learned here)

Before flowering starts I'd start to spray sulfur (if dry) or copper (if humid) once a month.
When flowering I'd spray every 2 weeks sulfur or copper.
I'd keep this up after the fruits develop all the way until harvest (switching between copper and another fungicide to limit resistance).
After the fruits are harvested I'd trim back the trees to the desired size/shape and remove any dead or diseased areas.
I'd be also spraying micro year around. (which i try to do now but I get lazy)

I think quite a few people have grown Lemon Drop successfully down here but now that the nicer Garcinias are spreading around you hardly any talk about it.

I have a bush still in a 7 gallon that is 3-4 years old. I got it when it was a seedling. It flowered
the past 2 years and is holding about 10 fruit now. I can't wait to try the fruit. About a year after I
got the seedling I bought 2 more 2' yearling trees and put them in the ground. They didn't thrive is
an understatement, They turned yellow and never did much. The first winter the trees shed their leaves
and one never came out of dormancy. The other tree I dug up last week. 3 years the tree was the same size.
It shed all its leaves and looks terrible now. I have seen pictures of beautiful 10 foot trees in peoples yards
and I really would like a couple in my yard. I had basically the same thing happen to a red jabo I put in
my yard. Meanwhile I have 3 red jabos in 15 gallon pots that have been producing nonstop since last summer.
For me I am going to bump up my candolleana in a 15 pot and wait, Hopefully I will have a few seeds to plant this fall
and I may try to put seedlings in the ground later. Does anyone have a large candoleanna in the ground in Florida?
If skhsn puts your tree in the ground please keep me posted. I personally wouldn't risk it. A 4-5 year old tree finally
producing, no way! I am still trying to figure out if it is the high ph or bright sun or both that is effecting Eugenia?

IMO ECondolleana does well in SFLa. Should grow fast (1-2ft/yr), and fruit 2-3 y/old. I have several on the ground 3-4 year-old.
In my experience 2 things may affect mostly some myrtaceae/eguenia/plinia  in SFl: A. some type of fungus that starts killing new grown/leaves and ends up sometimes killing the plant: I have used systemic fungicides before fruiting (1. Aliette Bayer is the only real systemic fungicide. 2. Salt of Potassium Phosphate (Agrisel BioPhos Pro, Agri-fos ), 3.Chlorothalonil (Daconil Docket WS Fungicide - Generic Daconil Weather Stik) and B. High PH Soil: use chelated iron 3-4X/year.

If it can work in your area I probably can work here too.
I might amend the area will sulfur and/or a whole lot of peat.

I'm sure we have a list somewhere on the forum.
I wonder if we have a list of reliable, resistant varieties specifically geared to the more inland areas and also considers the new diseases.
If someone has a link I'd appreciate it

'Hatcher' also received favorable mention.  That was a surprise to me.

That's another one that's going to go the way of the Dodo thanks to MBBS/rot.

What other mangoes are effected by this?
Terrible news about Venus as this is one of my favorites.

Our trees are fairly small I planted 3 gals, seeds and whatever size Garcinia I could find.  The Garcinias are extremely hardy, We have a fruiting size Madrono and Achacha but the Imbe was the first to flower  The only fruit we’ve produced is Banana,  Starfruit, Sugar Apple, Sappodilla, Pitomba, Lychee, Mango, Black Sapote.

That's awesome, I got into Garcinias late.
When is your ripening?
Is achacha really as good as some say it is?

Thanks for sharing your experience.
I guess I won't risk my fruiting 15 gallon candolleana.
I'll experiment with seeds like your doing.

Finally getting a few fruits from my tree.
The fully colored one i had yesterday tasted great.

I lost the first one to a bird peck, but i did take a nibble of non-pecked part.

My tree's fruits are a bit smaller then a green grape however they have tiny soft seeds some of which I just eat.
Maybe this will change as it get older.

The tree is in a 15 gallon pot.
Anyone have experience with this in the ground in South Florida?
It looks really ornamental so I'd like to plant it out.
