Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What's blooming and what's not blooming?
« on: September 29, 2015, 04:14:53 PM »
Thai Guava (nothing holding), Lisa Atemoya (7 on the tree), Kari Starfruit.
I have a 8ftx8ft Rosigold that push out a vegetative flush a few weeks back, hoping for flowers. Around what time is normal for Rosigold to flower? Last year only one branch had flowers though, I might of tipped it to late.

Finally got my hands on some Lisa Atemoyas thanks to Bender.  I am definitely going to plant one LOL.  Soooooo good, even though I am a fan of my kampong mauve sugar apples, this blows em away. Especially since more to eat. Do these grow true to seed?  These had a good flesh to seed ratio. Thanks Mike.

Same here, ate it yesterday morning. I was surprised to find the subtle tart component. I'm happy my tree has 7 fruits on it. Doesn't seems like its going to get anywhere near a pound though. They are talking a while to full up.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Otaheite Apple tree no fruits after years
« on: September 25, 2015, 02:32:42 PM »
I have an Otaheite Apple tree in my backyard planted close to the lake. It is about 15 feet tall but there are no fruits or blossoms as yet. Is anyone here familiar with this plant and can shed some light on this for me? How long does to take to bear fruits and what time of year is it supposed to be blossoming?

Thanks

I'm in the same boat, I planted a Malay Apple (Syzygium malaccense) by my parents house over 4 years ago. Its around 20 feet, never had flowers. Bought it as a 3 gallon tree. Wish i had some answers.

« on: September 23, 2015, 03:14:29 PM »
The mangos that seem to be consistently in most people top list are; Lemon Zest and Coconut Cream. If space is a concern Pickering, Mahachanok, and Julie (if you can get it to grow well) will be your tops.

Hi,
I'm searching way to buy some mangoes, I like angie, carrie, cogshall, pickering, julie, ice cream, coconut cream, edward, cushman, lemon zast, okrung, nam doc mai, pina colada

According to you which are the best of this list? anyone would cut some varieties?

and in general which are the top ?

thanks

I've heard a lot of good things about bangkok lemon jackfruit. Does anyone have a fruit or a piece of a fruit they don't mind parting with (for a fair price).

Check with Excalibur in Lake Worth.   They had some cleaned last week.

Great, thanks for the info Rob. I'll try to make my way up there on the weekend.
BTW, I understand it has a lemony flavor, but would you say it has a tart component to the taste in addition to the sweet?

Eugenia, Psidium and then what else ?

could you help me in the choice and where is possible to buy these seeds

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Breadfruit and Jackfruit Purchase
« on: September 21, 2015, 09:17:46 AM »
Good Day...
Can anyone assist in finding a place in Coral Springs or closer that I can purchase breadfruit or Jackfruit? It looks impossible to find these fruits in my location or close.

Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

I'm not really that into bread fruit but my father seems to purchase it ever now and then. I think he gets it from random west Indian stores. I think sybils (university and commercial) might be the closest.
The is also a huge Hispanic market on sample and riverside. You can try them.
As for jackfruit my most consistent way is craigslist or this forum. Don't know any place that close, sorry.

Awesome,

Keeps us updated on their statues.

Thank

Adam,
Any update on the availability of the new atemoyas from socal SAP, SL?
Also do you have any info on the "peruvian red" sugar apple from Wayne Clifton? Availability? Self-fertile?
Thanks in advanced

Thanks for inquiring,

I'm hoping to get scions again this winter from JF, i couldn't get any to take this season.

As for the Peruvian red from Wayne, I have a tree that's flowering size, but I'm waiting tor it to fruit next year before I graft any...I  ant to test the quality, because it's a seedling tree.

I have lots of sugar Apple seedlings to use a rootstock for next year, I wanna make about 40-50 big red.

The Valencia Pride will be fine. However, it will quickly get big again. Have you considered topworking it with a less vigorous variety next spring?

Great idea.

As said before, it will recover but in a year time you may have to do it again. This variety may not suit your needs, so it might be wise to considering changing it.
I have a VP in my front yard that i planted from a 3 gal in early 2014 its already 7ftx7ft with no fertilizer. I planted it in an area with ample room to grow. I'm using it as a distraction mango for friends, family and thieves.
Hope everything works out for you.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango Fruit Punch growth behavior?
« on: September 11, 2015, 11:06:51 AM »
Medium plus vigor.  Not scraggly.   Not like Lemon Zest,  moremwll rounded well shaped tree.  This is the habit in South Florida.   Since you mention  Coconut Cream,  while it can have undulating branches, especially the lower brances, it has a decent growth habit for me.  I feel this was set by aggressive pruning while young.

Thanks for the info Rob
Do you know the typical ripening time, June-July?

Where are some places in Coral Spring/Margate/Tamarac/Parkland areas that I can find tropical fruit?
The only tropical fruit I ran into is Guava and maybe a sapodilla.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona Self-Pollination/Self-Fertile List
« on: September 04, 2015, 09:52:56 AM »
I know before finding this forum the annonas seemed to be a mystery because of thepollination requirement. (nitidulid beetle)

Looking around the forum I haven't seen a thread for a list of self-pollinating/self-fruiting annonas. Basically annonas that don't require hand pollination. I realize that this may be change from region to region, so if you nominate a variety let us know where you had experience growing it.

Sugar Apple (A.Squamosa)
Big Red
Peruvian Red
Giant Boca Chewy
Orlando Chewy
Na Dai
No Split (Maurice Kong Selection)

Atemoya (A.Squamosa X A.Cherimola)
Geffner
Dream
Calostro (Super African Pride)
Birula (Super Lisa)
Phet Pakchong

Cherimoya (A.Cherimola)
Santa Rosa

Ilama (A. Diversifolia)
?

Custard Apple (A. Reticulata)
San Pablo
Fernandez

Soursop (A. Muricata)
?

I know i'm missing some species and the genus rollinias, if you have information on them I'll be happy to add it.

Here is the compiled list. I'll be updating it from time to time.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Compact Mango Suggestions
« on: August 31, 2015, 01:55:56 PM »
Based on my limited experience i would add Rosigold to the list. Mine is about 8 feet tall and its growth is pretty compact.
Also, I thought Coconut Cream was supposed to be leggy and Beverly was low and spreading. I could be wrong though.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WTB or trade for sugarcane
« on: August 31, 2015, 01:10:30 PM »
Anyone in the Coral springs area growing sugarcane? I want to try my hand growing it. Would like to buy a few stalks.
All I have to trade currently is an american beauty dragon fruit cutting.

969
40-33 is good.  C-12 is pretty good too.

Agreed on the c-12. I picked one up this weekend, just ate it, really good. The seed sprouted already though.
I might have waited a day to late, the outer flesh was firm and really sweet but the inner was a bit mushy. The flavor reminded me a bit of starbursts.

Anyone has any more info in this one? History?

You might also want to check out Shalama's Roti Shop. Its near 441 and Copans.
If your further south near Pembroke pines you can check out "Sheiks Bakery and Roti Cafe"

I have an American Beauty dragon fruit plant that i would like to get rid of this weekend.
In return i would like some fruits, maybe mangos or annonas.
Make me a reasonable offer and it yours.
If Coral Springs is to much out of the way I can bring it with me to work (near sawgrass mall) on Friday, Monday, or Tuesday.

Don't know what the small dragon fruit is doing. Its still alive though.
Your more then welcome to take it and give it a shot.  :D
