Congratulation....during sunny day i think you'll have almost summer temperature in your greenhouse...it's small, near to the house and the Sydney Sun is high also during winter :)

It might be too young to ripe all fruits....i think you only have to wait that plant will grow well.

Many cultivars make fruits as big as an Apricot or even more. I don't understand your cultivars....

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: How about a satsuma in zone 7 on a south wall?
« on: April 19, 2016, 09:36:36 AM »
A 7b, USDA could be a 8a, if you choose a south exposed Wall.....Satsuma is the hardiest edible (and not hybrids with Poncirus) Citrus...the problem is that Satsuma must be in dormancy, if you have warm weather before the cold you could have problems. I think that an adult plant in dormancy could withstand 15°F without big injuries.

I knew Mangostan needs time to flower.....even in its environment !!

Congrats :)

107
It does not write about Satsuma....it's probably the hardiest edible not hybrid citrus

Delvi83, maybe there are a lot of variations, I read about it, do u eat fruits from many different varieties?

Kona: thanks for the data

Yes, it could be....i ate fruit froma just one (or two) plants....i think they were also made from seed, nothing of selected for fruit quality..

As I know your summer (FL) is very wet....so, before the winter (dry season) will come, your Mango will have put roots in the ground...:) Mango is very dry-resistant

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cherimoya or White Sapote?
« on: April 08, 2016, 02:46:22 PM »
Hand pollination is common with Cherimoya.....my question is also, does Annona c. like the hot-arid summer of California?
If you like both fruits you should choose the plant that better thrives, so it will give you more fruits...

Do they lose their leaves in Madeira? In Italy the frost kills the leaves, but where it does not freeze, you can find Kiwi with leaves also in January...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Potted mango trees keep dying.....
« on: March 16, 2016, 10:48:41 AM »
Growing Mango in pot, in cold climate is hardier than other species....i lost 3 Mangos during winter.
I agree, the overwatering could be the main problem....as i notice, with low temperature, they resist to dry, but die if the soil is too wet.

« on: March 13, 2016, 02:00:32 PM »
HAve you seen if they were open during the night? Avocado flowers are strange by this point of view...they open, then close then open again...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: My avocado first flowering
« on: March 07, 2016, 08:54:32 AM »
I have a 3 years old seedling Avocado (in pot & protected during winter)......I knew that Avocado will not flower before 8-10 year if not grafted....instead also mine flowered this year.
Probably it depends from the type......normally they need 8 years, sometimes less... :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Edible Fruit Palm/Palms
« on: February 28, 2016, 04:41:35 AM »
On the previous page you wrote about Jelly Palm....someone said there are big differences among plant as size and taste of their fruits...so, are there some selected Jelly Palms? Are know cultivar with specific characteristics?

Somewhere i read that there should be a Dwarf Jelly Palm that should be also more cold-hardy than other....

There is also confusion about phylogeny....Butia capitata and Butia odorata are different species? or Butia odorota is just a cultivar of Butia capitata? which are the differences between this two palms?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango in central Italy: an experiment.
« on: February 28, 2016, 04:13:40 AM »
Be positive  :D !!

The two main problems are.....cold-air during May and Storm. So, could you open your greenhouse laterally and let the roof, or a least don't remove it permanently.

So if storms are expected, you could protect your Mango from the winds and hails....

125
Cover tree is usefull only if perfectly done.....without spending energy, wrapping a tree (without touching the leaves with the fabric) creates an environment with big temperature difference between day and night.....the lower temperature are often very similar to outside temperature, higher temperature (with the sun) can be pretty much more higher....

This could be an advantage for some specie, but a disadvantage for others..
