Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is my passionfruit self-fertile?

Differently from other Passifloras, the Passiflora edulis is often self-fertile and you don't need cross-pollination

I took the root-sucker in June and know the "new" plant is still growing....I think you can do it more o less always, if dormant you'll have to wait to see the result, but I think it's possible.

May be depends on the climate...is it grafted?

P.s.

Thanks  :) and share the future photos

It's easy to propagate...you can take one of the branch growing from the roots, take also part of roots and plant in a Pot....with this you'll get your result for sure.

One very good cultivar is "Gelso della Regina"...it's Morus nigra (not M.alba), it grows slower and remains smaller.
The fruit has an aromatic flavor better than any other Morus alba fruits i've ever eaten.

If better than P. edulis I wonder why it's not commercialized ?!

Is Asimina triloba an invasive plant? How does it colonize new area? Does it spread fast?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Does Cold Hardy Mango exist?
« on: August 23, 2015, 02:49:57 PM »
Yes, in Sicily the temperature is never too high during winter.....temperature above 65F are very rare. As said by Pancrazio this could be the reason why those mangos survived during that event.
It would be interesting understand if there is a sort of acclimatization also for Mango...may be what we know is imperfect and other mechanisms have be understood....I think it's not impossible to have more cold-hardy mangos..

P.s.

Just for fun....are there some related specie that could be hybrided with Mango as it happened for citrus with P.trifoliata?

Perfect....now you should prune a little for this winter....it seems too large for the greenhouse?!!
I saw a blue zone over the bark...did you solve the problem of the rotten wood?

All your efforts have been reward  :D.....without the Florence June's storm you would have more fruits....interestingly you got the fruit from first flowering and not for second even if you had much more flowers of the second.
Should it be better to let the "April" flowers? How do you explain the fact that you lost all fruits of the second flowering while the only fruit from first flowering is ripen?

Anyway congrats....let's hope your experiment will last for many years :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Does Cold Hardy Mango exist?
« on: August 19, 2015, 04:12:06 AM »
Yes, sure....but may be on the border between frost free zone (Mango Zone) and frost zone (Not Mango Zone) there is a place where there could be very light and rare frost episodes. I think a narrow valley in the winter, with strong thermal inversion...

I always wonder why for Avocado cultivars there is a range of hardiness, but not for Mangos?

As for the Avocados why could not be possible also for Mango to find cold-hardy cultivars? With the selection something could happen or may be still exist but have to be discovered (Cultivars of North India, near to Hymalaya or something else)

Cold Hardy Citrus / Re: Cold hardiness of various citrus

Maybe grafting Lemon on P.trifogliata could help you....but Lemon is one of the most sensitive to the frost.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Does Cold Hardy Mango exist?
« on: August 17, 2015, 12:48:35 PM »
Somewhere I read that new Mango's cultivars were seleceted for their cold hardiness.
I know well that in South Florida the cold is not a problem for Mango, but I read (in the same site) that the new cultivars could be grown in a Mediterranean climate and I guess could be tried in many places of USA were "normal" Mango would die.

Does someone know anything about that? Is it true or just advertising? If true, how is their cold hardiness compared to other not cold hardy cultivars?

Thanks :)

Just for curiosity , how long do Mangos produce fruits in Florida...I mean, from the early cultivars to the latest one ? Are there cultivars that flower two times for year?

I don't think P. incarnata needs full sun....I'm curious to know the taste of this fruits...may be depends on the cultivars? do they taste sweet?
