All santols are monoecious. But many trees are self sterile. I found that to be the case here with trees planted on their own that never fruit, or that fruit very poorly. So if you want good fruit set best to plant at least 2 trees. Don't think they would fruit in a pot, unless you use a really giant pot. Never heard of the seeds being eaten but have heard from Phillippine people here that they cook the whole fruit and eat the rind. But i've never tried that.
From what I can figure from advice from a Brazilian collector the top American Garcinia include sweet madrono, luc's Mexican and Garcinia sp.bicuda with achachairu, some macrophylla, intermedia, common madrono and some gardneriana getting honourable mentions. Brasiliensis is very similar to gardneriana but has smaller fruit. There seem to be some undescribed or ones that can't be assigned to a known species that may be near the top for fruit quality.
Russell's sweet and prainiana and maybe some rarer sweet dulcis types are perhaps the best fruit of the Asian garcinias. None taste like mangosteen.
Yep. I got one fruit that is currently about an inch and a half long and fattening up.Mine flowered a second time. Out of about 30 - 40 flowers, only 3 or 4 were female. And out of those, one seems to be holding and growing.
Any update on the tree? Hopefully it manage to bear fruit
Here is my in ground sabara. Trunk is near 3 inches I think. No flowers yet. It was just girdled so we shall see. If you look close enough, you'll notice two branches that have larger leaves. Those are coronata grafts. I was very tempted to top work this tree into grimal but decided to keep it as is.
Coronata var restinga
PIN's Coronata Crown 2
PIN's Coronata Crown 3
Thanks for the replies. Seems like Fijian Longan is the surest answer....
by the way here is a pic of the seeds (they are a couple weeks old)...do these seeds help confirm/identify the species?

Just wondering if Lucs G. Set fruit ok by themselves or do I need a second? I have another one that I can plant out but would have to plant within 2 feet of the first, I simply have no more room. I do have an Achacha about 30 feet away but am uncertain that it will help my Luc's. any wisdom appreciated!Single tree is enough.I supposed this species has a hard time setting fruit outside puerta vallarta jalisco due to the climate.Maybe this species needs a rather long dry season for the fruit to stick
Abiu grows like weeds here, and can fruit in 2 years, if lucky. Have many volunteer trees growing around mother plant. Love the taste. Problem here is oriental fruit fly. Every single fruit that is not bagged is stung.I'm too lazy to bag them. I just go for the starapples instead, which have thicker rinds and never get stung.
Dear friends.
Thanks for the messages in pm, but people are asking me for jaboticabas !, I'm in the north of Brazil, Jaboticabas are more of Southeast Brazil, here I have never seen any kind of jaboticaba in the forests, only in some houses and as it is very hot here , I have never seen fruit.
Here in the region we have many species of pouteros, annonas, palm trees, moraceas, spondias and other species.
Eugenia here is also small amount of species.
Pera do cerrado...is bioma cerrado, not amazon rainforest
How many coronata restinga trees do you have and does the other trees flowered yet? I wanna buy the seeds. When will the next season come?
Have 3 in the ground. Flowers and small fruit on now.
Here are some photos that i took from a facebook group showing growers and their plantsthe video is a tease. no video of the fruits being cut up as far as what i saw.
correct me if i'm wrong, but does it seems like it's not as productive as the other 'workhorse' longan varieties?
This variety is very popular in indonesia lately. You can see hobbyist and backyard gardener posting pictures of the tree on facebook groups.I will try getting some pictures to post it here.If lucky i will try asking them about photos or videos of the fruit being cut open. Not sure about the origin though
Awesome!
