Are these "new" varieties or renamed ones with more "layman" catchy names? Saw PIN tags on them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dot Blooms smell
« on: March 16, 2015, 08:48:24 AM »
Anyone else with a Dot flowering mango tree notice its distinct smell? A lil bit of stinky like a wet dog with some hints of canned sweet corn? No wonder its the most laiden with flies in my yard.

Is its main bearing season really May to November (+/- a month or so) as PIN and UF docs says? Would really apprecieate feedback from fruiting tree owners of either varieties in this area :) . Looking for more sapodillas. Alano has been great and Ox....frustrating.

I gots two:
Dot- family members not fond of the tart it has despite it's sweet/very sweet. Some thought it was a rude prank  :o . I'm myself am conflicted about it  :( .
Neelam/lum- Lots of fruit and in clusters, but fruit is small, seed is large, and habit of seed germinating in fruit (tap root).

*glances at Rosigold* :D

Searched for myself but the "untilmate mango list" needs a password to access. :(

Out of all my mango trees that bore fruit this season, these two var. consistently had seeds that sprouted- even after considerable time being refrigerated. Neelam especially. Appreciate anyone that knows the answer :) .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Looking for fibrous mango
« on: April 26, 2014, 11:18:57 PM »
Specifically for mature green picking, freezing (months) and eventual cooking...(curried Trini style). Must have fiber and be very productive with good disease resistance. East Indian is very big and fibrous but am unsure about productivity / disease resistance compared to say a Madame Francis. Thoughts and recommendations appreciated.  :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango tree 2nd bloom
« on: April 18, 2014, 09:05:00 AM »
My 8yr inground Julie (with golf ball sized fruits) and potted 3gal Imam Pasand (no fruit set) is pushing its 2nd flowering event. Anyone elses mango trees? Ice Cream held 3 mature fruit in it's 2nd bloom last year but it looks like no Ice cream this year :( .

Popped in for a few stuff and saw organic Keitt Mangoes from California for sale in Plantation WholeFoods.
They looked mature and lots had that slight, "ripe give" feel when gently pressed.
2 for $6 :O :O :O
Bought 2 just to taste given the attention Keitt's has been getting as of late.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Anyone tasted Juliette mango this season?
« on: August 25, 2013, 11:00:59 AM »
Seems like this Zill creation got overshadowed by some new favorites like Sweet Tart, Pineapple Pleasure, and Sunrise. I have a tree in ground and after 4 consecutive flushes it seems to be a very compact and bush grower.

Any one tasted it? Found only one mention of it on the forums (good for container culture). No reference to brix and fruit size compared to the others.

Both 7gal trees are less 1.5 to 2 yrs inground. Rosi flowered twice this season and held 3 mature fruit total. Two split. Cushman flowered once and held 2 mature fruit. Found the last one split this morning. It was fine yesterday. lol. Members with experience with these cvs., is this a common thing? Was soo looking foward to tasting these of of my tree.  :( .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Southern Blush or Spirit of 76'

Which of the two has better flavour (subjective), production, and consistent in both areas.

I've read both develop nice colour, and internal breakdown can happen to both.
Growth habbit and look of both trees could be a deciding factor (bushy vs leggy). So please recommend away  :D .

Most of the places/ people I've contacted don't have anymore left or don't sell that type.
Would love to buy one as it's my favorite.
Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tolbert mango (Torbert, Tolbet, Torbit)
« on: September 21, 2012, 03:14:57 PM »
Any one tasted it? Better yet, Harry, do you grow it ?  ;D

Thoughts about the fruit and tree (production, disease etc) would be apprecieated.

Got the PFSHS 11:201-202: 2004 pdf already.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Robbie's final mango twee
« on: September 01, 2012, 05:04:08 PM »
Unless...God forbid a tree or trees dies or I'm not pleased with the fruit.
But as of now, my yard is at critical capacity- including 3x 20gal containers.
After much research on TFF and GW forums for late season mangoes I didn't have, 3 names came up:- Beverly, Gold Nugget and Neelam.
PM'd Zands (thx for answering my questions :) ) about his Gold Nugget tree and I was set on getting one after such favorable feedback.
Then...I saw a pic of Zands 7gal Neelam he got from Jeff that was planted out last year.
Looked barely 4 ft tall and holding lots o' mature mangoes.  :o :o
Thats what I want. Highly favorable reviews from some forum "mango heavy weights" saying it was an excellent mango ;D sealed the deal.

My 7 gal Neelam (looks 15gal tho) sourced by Pepesplants for me. Love this little tree.

Some buds are full and it looks as if it is going to push out new growth this month (tho I've read Neelam's growth is slow).

Latest happenings this month

Maha! 3rd flush since mid May 2012 pug.

Mallika. Lightly tipped. 3rd flush this summer. Fruit next yr I hope.

Okrung. Still growing madly. Quite bushy.

Cushman. Definetly vigorous. 3rd flush since mid May 2012 pug.

To recap, including those above, I have:
Lancetilla (never tasted it (nti))
Pickering
2x Julie (contanerizing the youngest makes possible a space for one more tree :D :D )
Dot
Pim Saen Mun (nti)
Carrie (nti)
and finally a Rosigold (nti).

Other mangoes I would have liked to plant out based on TFF and GW feedback are Cogshall, Gold Nugget, Beverly, Fairchild, Bailey's Marvel, Duncan, Spirit of 76, Alampur Baneshan, PPK, LZ, and CC. I'll save these for another plot of land  ;) .
If I had to do it over, I think I would have only planted all the FL avaliable SE Asian mango varieties. A green ripe yet firm NDM I had multiple times this season is just heavenly for me. Sweet, firm, juicy and allot to consume. And if having tasted 2 Mankunsri mangoes this summer was just a preview to SE Asian mangoes, SE Asian mangoes are excellent.

Now...where to plant this Neelam so the GF won't see it- immediately  ;D .

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Better wind breaker mango tree
« on: August 12, 2012, 10:48:12 AM »
The ~ 15ft space between my neighbour's house side and mine faces North-South, and when it gets breezy, wind just rushes through there to the back. I have a Carrie and Julie destined for 24" diameter pot using Al's Gritty mix, so it's going to be heavy. Any idea on which of the two can withstand short bursts of 15-20 mph winds? From the Carrie's I've seen, they seem to be more compact and dense than Julie. I also have a pugged Lance and Pickering for potential container. I'll post some pics.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / TnTRobbie's 2012 mango season results :)
« on: August 07, 2012, 11:48:17 AM »
Hello all. I just felt like sharing the spoils of my 2012 mango season.
Sadly mango season has ended since mid-July for me. But considering the quality of this year fruit, I can't wait for next year.
I hope next winter is not as windy as this years.
97% came from my two 6yr old Julie and NDM.
I was fortunate to get a taste of some of the recent additions I purchased.

Initial harvest: My Julies rippened first. Quality is just like Trinidad's....exce!!ent.

Peak of Harvest: NDMs start rolling in.
