Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Dwarf coconut palm

The coconuts HD and Lowes sell are from Costa farms in FL. From my communications with them they say its the Green Malayan variety (dwarf in that it bears fruit at a younger age (2'-3' of grey bark) but will get 40'-80' tall). Any idea about the "ideal" planting distances for them?

If I had to choose between Mallika and Maha based on the fruits from my own 5+yr old  trees, I'd probably give Mallika the edge. Its a very good mango when picked at the right mature time and allowed to counter top ripen. I've had tree ripened Mallikas and they are good, but not like picked mature green and ripened. Maha is highly enjoyable as well- more productive and prettier fruit shape and color. I enjoy NDMs as they can be sickeningly sweet (honey/ vanilla). However, growing conditions and root stock can influence fruit splitting tendencies. Pickering can be really good also but for the past 2-3yrs it has fell out of favor with me due to early heavy rains in my area washing out its flavor. Sets the most fruit. Drops the most fruit. I wont consider it "Dwarf" neither. Ice Cream is delicious- if you ever manage to get fruit. Compact, but not what I'd consider "dwarf" neither. Mabye the most compact of the 4 mentioned.

I'd keep it. It will start pushing new growth in about 21 days. Select 2-3 equidistant vigorious sprouts and train em to be more vertical. When established (bearing its own weight), tip tip tip the subsequent growth for a bushy tree.

58
Very nice Abimael. Full leaves already. Mind still looking like sprouts. Mabye its time to pot up and give it some sun.

Recently watched a video on Truly Tropical channel on YouTube,  Chris says that the Pickering is Poly,  I have a tree, and never really bothered to check the seed, I always assumed it was Mono for some reason.

Two pickerings sprouted under my tree. They turned out to be mono.

Just wanted to chime in that I collected my resent package today (it actually came in on the 18th of August). It left Brazil on the 10th. I honestly forgot about it and the USPS notice to "pick up at the post office" didn't state where it was from. In any event, I was pleasantly surprised to see the post-officer come walking out with the yellow and white Correios box and suspected it was the seeds. 38 of 40 seeds were already sprouted with dense root structure (given the size) formed. Even fewer seedling roots had white delicate tips, but time will tell who survived. The packaging was excellent, neat and labelled. Real professional. A++

Its been 2 weeks now since I planted them in vermiculite and at least 1 of each of the 5 types I purchased sprouted. Escalarte has the max at 3 sprouts. Hopefully more will push out in the next few weeks.

A huge THANK YOU to Raulglezruiz for coordinating this group buy. :double thumbs up: :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: How were your mangos this year
« on: August 12, 2017, 06:17:17 AM »
I'd say my crop was half of what last year's were. Some mature trees didint flower at all (Cushman, Okrung (again), Langra, Phillippine, ST Maui, Mallika, PSM). Some flowered but didn't hold much fruit (Dot, Maha, Dot, Kesar) and some flowered but didnt hold any fruit (Ice Cream, Imam Pasand). The heavy rains in early May had my first crop of mangoes washed out. It started to improve by late June. Pickering was the most productive tree but suffered again on my side with no flavor all season. Julies (my bread n butter) was up to standards by early July. Juliettes were very good this year though a short season (~2-3 weeks for 60+ mangoes) with brix hovering in the 22s. At one point I picked 14 Juliettes in the ripe-near ripe state in 1 evening. Kesar's were o k  this season. Fernandin was unimpressive and a disappointment. I let the squirrels have their way with it. Venus was very good. The couple Dots I had were very very good as well.
Top 3 mangoes:
1.Dot
2. Juliette
3. Venus

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: venus mango
« on: August 07, 2017, 07:24:14 PM »
Just had the 2nd of 3 Venus mango. This one was fully ripe with no hint of green anywhere picked from the tree yesterday. This 808g (1.7lbs) mango was delicious. Flesh was firm and fiberless. Teeth marks on scraping flesh from the seed made a pattern reminding me of Mallika and Juliette. But it's flesh is firmer/denser and yellow. If I had eaten it the same day it was picked I would have gotten that nice chalky sweet texture I love but I managed to get hits of it from the top.  The seed flesh was a little watery but the outskirts was really delicious  sweet with a little hint of tart. Very mild what looks to be like jelly seed. Shucking the husk exposed the seed had fully developed roots and shoots already. Can't wait to get this tree in ground. I think I like it more than Cushman. Brix was 22.

I had picked a ripe Venus off of my tree last week. Granted it's in a 50gal pot (got in from Patrick in 2013-14 as a 7 gal), the fruit displayed uneven ripening (base ripe and the top half green) and what appears to be jelly seed. The seed was also split as if the seed was sprouting. Cutting it and tasting the ripe flesh reminded me of Cushman.  Two more left on the tree.

A fav of mines as well. Delicious fruit when you do get them and they can be large. Unique leaves and natural branching growth.

I tasted a couple of em from a forumite's mature tree about 2 yrs back. I enjoyed them. Thought to myself I wont mind growing a tree.

Can I have my seeds shipped to OCchris1 then I'd compensate OCchris1 to send them to me ?  ;D

No seriously.

Occhris1, congrats.  :)

Is Kathy monoembryonic?

I am one who does enjoy the chalky taste...
[/quote]

I have a kathy seedling and it was mono. I too love the chaulky texture of some mangoe cvs- especially if it's sweet/very sweet.. Starch mango from tnt has it. When I first tasted ZINC in 2015 it had it. Dot can get it some times. I think Valcarrie and Julieette too. Looking forward to enjoying Venus as well if it has it.

To those who frequent the Miami International Airport or have noticed the numerous mature and bearing coconut trees in the uncovered parking lot near Concourse "G". Any idea what type they are?
Big green coconuts on some trees fruiting at what I'd estimate to be 20ft.

Pickering's still in the 12s. Julie in the 22's. First Dot's of the season and they're registering in the 22s. Orange/ deep orange flesh with a nice mild chalkiness to them. One of my favorite mangoes. Tog Bi Cons are maturing up and I'm anxious (and hopefull) that they are not washed out but great as I remember em 2 yrs ago.

Mango. More flesh. I dont think I've tasted a fruit that can top a Sweet Tart or Lemon Zest.
