Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Favourite fall-to-the-ground fruits?
« on: December 05, 2012, 11:14:50 PM »

  Hi friends,

How about kuini. Fragrant fruit and tasty. The fragrance will lead us towards the fruit under the tree that the fruit falls. We always searching   for kuinis in the early morning after the ripe fruit fall at night.

I had a good feast on grumixama today!
the temps are hitting the high 30s with 90% plus humidity so they are ripening super quickly.
i also went to the farmers market this morning and purchased cherries picked yesterday evening 200km inland to compare the two. They both have their own flavour, but on a day like today, a grumixama chilled for 30mins is hard to beat. The grumixamas were equal in size to the cherries and were a touch sweeter. The flesh to seed ratio was about equal, with either being a shade larger than the otehr in different fruit. the cherries tasted like cherries though, and the grumixamas tasted more, if anything, like cherry plums...

 Hi BMc,

Is the fruits comes from your own grumichama tree? How tall is your grumichama tree? Can you please paste the picture here.

Typical asian promo-movie. I do not see the date-info and no nice views from the shops.

Bangkok has something similar at kasetsart university Saturday 26 January –
Saturday 2 February 2013
Check the date again if you want to visit this because they might change it! Welcome to Asia.

Maybe next year i will go to the Maha in Malaysia, looks fun to me.

Faezal Donalds durians looks like a great place to go.I can get D99,D101 and D175 here so I'd be going for the D197.I bet there are some great fruit vendors around your neck of the woods that sell a range of other fruits as well.

Hmm... Clone D197  ....for local name they call it Raja Kunyit or Musang King.
Did you know that durian clones 'Musang King' (D197) or the original name 'Durian Kunyit' ( name after the yellow flesh, that its colour as same as tumeric powder colour ), originated from Tanah Merah, Kelantan, Malaysia and registered with the Department of Agriculture in 1993. Kunyit means tumeric in malay language. Mike you want the seed of D197?

Cheers

Did you ever hear that D197 come true to parent from a seed? Few growers told that is not quite possible. Anyway, next year I have to export some branded durian grafts. Do you know some good quality nurseries around KL? My Singapore friend told me that knows some top quality Musang King source, but 50 RM for a tree is a bit too much if you want a lot..

One of the Nursery around KL that have durian clone and fruit tree seedlings for sale, please ask them for the price.

looking good!

keep acidic, and moist during growing season...reduce waterings, but never let dry out during the cold/dry season (winter)

they will enjoy full sun after about 1.5yrs of age, but iv'e seen growers put them in full sun from the start.

good luck

Thanks Adam for the tips

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Durian seed
« on: October 09, 2012, 10:27:54 AM »
Recently in malaysia I ate my way thru a lot of different cvs (real cvs) of durian as well as oodles of seedlings.

Anecdotally I am going along with the premise durian from a 60 year old tree is better than fruit from a five year old tree incl red prawn

I ate red prawn...yummy but not so yummy that it is worth the price tag compared to other less expensive cvs and seedling (kampong) durian

The rival to red prawn as considered the best is one out of johore Musang something

There were several I liked as much as red prawn.  As for what is the best tasting cv, with durian it really boils down to personal taste

When i was at Boa's durian farm a guy came in literally shaking with excitement as his favourite had just become available. He'd been waiting all year and the moment Bao called he got in his car and drove there to purchase. It was super-yummy.

Also Bao said go for fruit with wrinkled flesh as that is a sign it is from an older tree but post him telling me that I don't buy it.

But the age thing might be true. Went to friend's kampong outside Kota Baru and durians were falling from old seedling trees. Nothing i ate was better

in 1986 I successfully shipped out 1000 seeds of durian from bali .. so it can be done!

Hi Recher,

Durian Kampong can be found not only in Kota Bharu Kelantan. It also can be found in Perak, Johor and Pahang State and other state in Malaysia. This 3 state is among the best Durian Kampong producer. Some of the Durian Kampong tree is very old and more than 60 years old. Kampong or Kampung means village in Malay language . Durian Kampong actually means durian tree originally that grow from seeds and not a clones.

Cheers
