Tropical Fruit Discussion / Barbados Cherry not fruiting anymore!

My Barbados Cherry would give me loads of fruit when I first got it about 4 years ago but since last year it has barely given 1 or 2 cherries. I fertilize it every 2 months or so with 8-3-9, and it doesn't seem to have any diseases, leaf color looks good, in full sun, gets watered weekly, etc.

Has anyone else experienced this and, more importantly, have a solution to get it to start fruiting again?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherry of the Rio Grande did not fruit this year!

I really don't like it when one of my fruiting trees fails to fruit in its season. That's what happened with my cherry of the rio grande this year. I'd like to blame the late cold front that we had this year, maybe it messed up the fruiting window since it came in early March. Or it may be because i fertilized it with some potassium sulfate soon after that to try to encourage it to flower.

Did anyone else's CORG not fruit this year?

Any advice or comments would be appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Would these make decent fruit bags?

Just ran across this site and noticed that they sell cloth bags. I think they would make decent fruit bags (for protecting against insect damage and sun exposure) since they are cotton material and white to keep the fruit cooler. And they have drawstrings which would make it easier to open and close to check up on the fruit.

I guess I'm looking for either confirmation that they would make decent fruit bags or reasons why they wouldn't.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is the Gold Nugget Loquat variety bland???

I tasted the first fruit off my Gold Nugget Loquat and it wasn't sweet at all. I tried yellow, orange and orange shriveled ones to make sure I ate them when they were ripe, but the taste was always bland, not sweet, and boring.

has anyone else experienced this or know what might be causing it? this is the tree's first fruiting.

Prices at the bottom for the Chinese bayberry seem reasonably priced. I'll wait to hear from others and if positive would consider placing a group order from them.

Dear Friends of the Arboretum,

I hope you will join us for the following March events:

Saturday, March 2, 2013
I will lead a walking tour of the Maya Cocoa Garden Exhibit of the Gifford Arboretum this Saturday at 9:00 AM. The Mayans were a very interesting culture that was very advanced in certain respects. Come learn about some of the plants that were important to these people, including the sources of chocolate, chewing gum and kapok. We will meet by the semi-circle stone benches and the tour should last about an hour and a half. I will also be happy to look at and discuss other parts of the Arboretum after the initial tour is finished.

Dr. Chad Husby of Montgomery Botanical Center will present "The Garden Primeval: Ancient Plant Forms in Nature and Cultivation." Dr. Husby is an expert on tropical gymnosperms and this presentation will be of interest not only to plant lovers, but also to anyone interested in evolution and the history of plant life. As always at our monthly meetings, contributions to our snack table are encouraged but not required. The meeting will take place at 7:00 PM in Cox Science Center Room 166. A poster is attached so please post it or share it with others who would be interested in attending.

Canned rambutan stuffed with pineapple sold at a local supermarket!


I also brought back some Maqui, aristotelia chilensis, seeds which I'm hoping will sprout soon.

I want to know which fruits pair up nicely with miracle fruit. I had some not-so-ripe mulberries after popping a miracle fruit berry in my mouth and it made them excessively sweet, sort of like eating an orange with miracle fruit. Overwhelming!

What other fruits work well with miracle fruit?

Can someone tell me if the actual Cacao pulp flavor is any good? I hear that you can make a juice from it, but I was interested in knowing the flavor quality. I don't have a tree, and have always debated whether to have this tree in my limited backyard space.

If the real attraction are the seeds, and making chocolate with it, I think I'd rather just buy the chocolate commercially.

Hmm, I have heard people say that mistreating a plant or tree by hitting it, damaging it, ripping off its leaves, etc. is a way to promote flowering.

I have also heard that it is totally not true. I guess that it may depend on the species.

Ripping the leaves off of certain chill-requiring plants makes sense, though.

Does anyone have a good explanation of this?

Has anyone tasted mountin ppaya and can compare the flavor to regular papaya? I'll know soon as my play has a few untie fruit at the moment.

I believe it has a tart flavor when ripe that needs to be sweetened.

Grrrrr... This is really frustrating.

I recently discovered a few pots had almost all of the seeds dug out of them. I had just planted a bunch of rare seeds, including cherapu, rainforest plum and pulasan, in them. I had even thought of covering those pots with some aluminum mesh. Too late now!

Luckily they left a few and I'm hoping these still germinate.
