Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: One last Mango Tree

I say "Sweettart" only because I wish I had room for one more and that's what I would install. Everyone says Sweettart is the BEST out there, it's always #1 out of the hundreds of great mangoes, good luck!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Banana growing
« on: July 05, 2016, 11:58:12 AM »
Hello gardening family! Does anyone know anything about bananas? I've had a little patch of about 12 trees growing for a few years, this tree took every bit of two years to flower but I know nothing about them. One of my neighbors gave me a bunch but he moved away and I don't remember what he told me about them. I never really cared about bananas because I am 100% mango nut and have my 7 mango trees. Anyway, if anyone can share ANY info I would very much appreciate it! Variety, ripening process, when to pick and how.. Any info! Thank you in advance!

I am so excited, I love Valencia Pride mangoes! I'm amazed at how big these guys are for how young and small my tree is.

That "haze" will disappear.

Haze? Apologies friend, I do not understand what that means?

I've been trying to read up on when they're ready but I'm going the easy route :)
Should these guys be solid red when picked?

I though we weren't supposed to fertilize at all during fruiting...?

I am envious of those who own Harvest Moon trees. Mangoes so large you can eat half for your lunch and the other half for dinner..

Have you had a "Venus Mango"? I felt the same way, I couldn't eat the whole fruit, it was too big!

Wow dude, that's a great looking tree bro. Are all of the fruit that big or was the pictured fruit an anomaly? I read somewhere that HM was a pretty massive mango. I hope they're good tasting as well a x-large. I bought the tree two days ago and it already flushed, I can tell she's going to be vigorous! I hope your tree does well this year.

This one has 17 fruit on it at 7-8 ft tall. It should be noted that only about 50% of the canopy bloomed:

I have one in Loxahatchee around the same size with zero fruit on it.

They are a favorite target of Sri Lankan weevils.

Squam- Those trees and fruit look great! I imagine you can say you have double the fruit due to the size that they'll end up being 😃😃
Do you remember when you purchased your tree? I'm curious as to how big (if you remember) your trunk was, I'm not asking for the measurements but was it really big? The one I bought has a monster trunk, I've never seen a mango tree in a 3 gallon bucket this thick, it's crazy!

:-) What I thought was HM was really sunrise. In 2011, my wife brought home 2 mangoes from Zills hpp. One was a sunrise and one was a HM, but she had forgotten which was which. Years later (2014), I finally got to try a HM from zills hpp, and I realized the mistake. Sunrise is the whoo hoo mango (I have 2 planted out :-).

Mine had serious issues with anthracnose. I only tried one HM fruit but I didn't think it was special.

So you did not like the mango or you did like it?

I live in Palm Beach County just west of the turnpike
Ive had this tree in the ground for 5 years

1.)Its a very vigorous grower , on par with VP

2.)The fruits are huge, like small cantaloupes-  they are gorgeous fruit- pink and yellow, they keep well-I've mailed some without issue

3.)the flavor is good, creamy, traditional mango, its yellow fleshed and firm , no fiber at all. - its much better if picked when ripe - totally pink and yellow with no green on it.  I don't think the taste is nearly as good as Lemon Zest, for example but its completely different.

4.) For me, its been an excellent producer- I have a lot of fruit on it right now. I know that isn't universal. The tree is planted next to VP, which has hardly any fruit on it this year.

Ill post a photo this evening to show you

That would be great, I would love to see the tree and what the fruit might look like. The nursery where I bought it could not tell me much about the tree it's self, just what info he got from Zill I guess. He did say the mangoes are absolutely huge though. The trees girth is amazing, I've have never seen a grafted tree so large. It makes me think the tree is going to get huge quick :)

For some odd reason there is not much information or pictures of "Harvest Moon Mango" anywhere. I wish I could find more info. Please share some photos when you get a chance, it would be much appreciated!!

Can anybody give me some information on harvest Moon mango? I found one at a local nursery, it is grafted and he says it is a zill tree. The main stem is the biggest that I have ever seen on a mango tree and he says that the actual mangos are the largest mangos out of all the varieties. I am curious of the taste, fiber, size of mango, size of tree, and any information that you have,  and personal experience with. What do u like about it?

I have had this fruit and enjoyed it.  Large, round, fruity/floral smell, a juice factory.  Cannot comment on growth habit but the results seen in the fruit are good for me.

They are very vigorous growers. Light/poor producers of large, fiber-free fruit of excellent eating quality. Not precocious at all so don't expect fruit for a good couple years.

I like the flavor much more than nam doc Mai.

I had tons of bloom and fruitlets only 2 fruits held. I was wondering what happen.....thanks for the info.

How big and how old is your tree? Also what zone do you live in? Do you have any pics of it?

Here is the plant I found, it has very nice branch formation for a short tree. ($35)

Hello fruit fam, I was wondering if this would be a good time to cut my little fruits to encourage growth on my young golden nugget mango tree? Here's some picks:

Any help on trimming them: length of cut etc. then I'm assuming I should fertilize it as well right?

Hello, I have a root stock that I wanted to make a "mango cocktail tree" via "top grafting", the host is nice and branchy. It just so happens that the plant is blooming (I am going to cut them off), can I graft while the root stock is blooming? Or will it kill the scions?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: First mango blooms of the 2016 season

The flush on the LZ has still a ways to go to harden off so don't be too upset if it does not flower. In addition,  and including the LZ, all your trees are still quite young  so dont get frustrated if the wind up holding no fruit.  That is a distinct possibility.

Yes, they are young trees. Do you think I should give them one more year of growing before I let them flower? I will let my big Haden flower, its about 12ft tall, I think it'll do well this year. Last year I only got two off of it but I caught powdery mildew and anthractnos... Anyway, my other trees? Let them grow or let them bud?

Also, should I spray them with some Copper fungicide before the pollen sacks open up? Can I give them a bloom formula to help them really bud? Any suggestions would truly be appreciated!

My Haden is blooming nicely, I had swollen nodes for about one month, I was starting to think it wasn't going to flower.

This Valencia Pride has a leaf/flower mixture going on. This will be its first year fruiting, I'm very excited!

The Lemon Zest flushed in December so I don't have any clue what it's going to do. I believe it's a late bloomer so I'm hoping it'll bloom in a few weeks.

I picked up a Golden Nugget in Aug of 2015, I flushed at the same time the Lemon Zest did but now it's showing flowers after it just flushed. I am assuming it needs to be removed to keep the plant in veg mode, Right? Too small?

Sorry for the crooked pictures, I can not seem to get them normal on here :/
Would anyone have some advice for beginning flowering care? Bloom fert, copper sulfate, or anything at all should be supplied? Thank you guys!
