Tropical Fruit Discussion / Banana growing
« on: July 05, 2016, 11:58:12 AM »
Hello gardening family! Does anyone know anything about bananas? I've had a little patch of about 12 trees growing for a few years, this tree took every bit of two years to flower but I know nothing about them. One of my neighbors gave me a bunch but he moved away and I don't remember what he told me about them. I never really cared about bananas because I am 100% mango nut and have my 7 mango trees. Anyway, if anyone can share ANY info I would very much appreciate it! Variety, ripening process, when to pick and how.. Any info! Thank you in advance!

I've been trying to read up on when they're ready but I'm going the easy route :)
Should these guys be solid red when picked?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Harvest Moon mango questions
« on: May 21, 2016, 02:01:25 PM »
Can anybody give me some information on harvest Moon mango? I found one at a local nursery, it is grafted and he says it is a zill tree. The main stem is the biggest that I have ever seen on a mango tree and he says that the actual mangos are the largest mangos out of all the varieties. I am curious of the taste, fiber, size of mango, size of tree, and any information that you have,  and personal experience with. What do u like about it?
Here is the plant I found, it has very nice branch formation for a short tree. ($35)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Good time to cut the fruit for growth?
« on: April 18, 2016, 12:44:29 PM »
Hello fruit fam, I was wondering if this would be a good time to cut my little fruits to encourage growth on my young golden nugget mango tree? Here's some picks:

Any help on trimming them: length of cut etc. then I'm assuming I should fertilize it as well right?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Florida mango flowers?
« on: February 08, 2016, 09:41:26 AM »
Hello fam, does anyone in Florida have flowers on their mangos? My VP and Hayden are both pushing something out right now but it's hard to tell, my fingers are crossed! My lemon zest flushed like crazy a few weeks ago, each branch did really well. I guess it won't have any mangos this year :(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Miracle Grow Citrus Fert.
« on: August 22, 2015, 10:21:32 AM »
Hello fruit family! Has/is anyone using this fertilizer? I picked it up from Lowes the other day but have not applied it yet. Can anyone give me some feedback? I've been using "SunnyLand Avacado" Fert and it's been... Ok.
I have 5 mango trees and they all seem to be doing well but like always I want better :)

I'm thinking September 1st will be my last Fert for this year before flowering in Dec.,

I think this topic has been hit before but I'm curious when is the last time you can fertilize with granular fertilizer so you don't ruin your mango crop? I have been using SunnyLand Avacodo fert 6-4-6. Also can you use worm casting teas year round or only during the growing seasons?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Help with a mango ID..?
« on: July 19, 2015, 07:13:23 PM »
Hello friends, I picked these off my mothers mango tree. She lives in a house build in 1923, the tree is def full grown and has been since she bought the house 20 years ago.
Tree is around 30ft tall, fruit is very sweet, 4.5-6 inches length, 14 inch circumference, I do not have a scale to measure fruit weight. Any thoughts?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Viable tree as a root stock?
« on: July 19, 2015, 01:24:04 PM »
Hello friends,I found a tree that was probably grown from seed it's kind of big but I'm sure the roots or damage somewhat.. This tree has been in a pot at my moms house for about three years, it's surviving but it's not growing do you think that I can take it home, bury it, nurse it for maybe a month or so and then use it for a grafting tree? I would like to use it as an experiment for grafting, I have a few friends with trees that I could get branches from.. What are your thoughts?

Hello friends, I m new to the forums :)
I have a bad anthracnose problem that is deep in the stem of the plant and leaves. It's a Haden mango, 3 years old, approx 11ft tall. I have black areas all the way up the main stem. I have a few questions that I hope the pros here can answer...
1) do I have to cut the affected branches off? This would be really painful!!
2) Can treating the tree with "contact" AND "systemic" Copper fungicide cure it?
3) Can I get a product from Lowes/Home Depot that will work? And what would you suggest? Brands?

Here is a pic of the fungicide I have, I do not know if it is contact or systemic fungicide..
