The critters will just bite through the organza bags like it's nothing. I am going to try organza bags dipped in hot wax chilli oil mix. That should do the trick.

Socalkoop,

If you ever have extra rainbow or malibu#3 scion, I would be interested in a trade or buy some scion.

128
You know a source can get malibu#3 scions?

129
I got fast germination on mongongo nut. After I hacksawed outer layer of shell. I soaked for a several hours in water with some drops of nitrozime.

Then placed on bottom heat, soil temp in mid 80s.

Problem with bolt cutters is the crushing force is going to crush the seed. The mongongo nut is firmly snug against the outer layers of shell, so intense pressure will go right into the nut.

133
For the Mongongo use a small hack saw and clamp down the nut cut around and remove outer shell. Secondary shell requires to be removed as well be more gently and use hack saw to remove as well after reclamp. Or use sand paper to create small hole.

Then soak in water for 24hr or so.

134
Most plants need the night cycle to convert the light energy to carbs. I would go with what merce3 said with 18 to 20 hours on, 4 to 6 off.

I would also make sure you have adequate amount of grow lights for the area. Not all grow lights are made equally and some are much more effective per watt then others. I use generic led UFOs off eBay with true watt around 90, this is for a sq ft of 1.5'x1.5'. Mostly used for seedling starting and seedling growth for the first 6 months.

135
Growth rate and drought tolerance probably would be two issues with the turpentine FL rootstock vs the manilla California one.

Oh wow, that looks like an amazingly good lychee variety. I wonder how long until the trees are available in the U.S. ... maybe 10 years if we are lucky  :o.

I love loquats, the best variety of Loquat I have tasted is 'Vista White'. Vista White is like a super sweet asian pear without the smooth flesh of a loquat.

They will get softer. Once they start to give in some to the touch like a ripe pineapple should be ready.

Sorry to hear about HOA troubles, I made sure no HOA when I got the house. So I can plant to my hearts content with all the weedy fruit plants. Starting to become a repository for your creations  ;D. Hoping they become fruitful in the near future so I can start helping you with selection and sharing.

I think it has more to do with moisture control. Its easier to overwater a small plant in a large container, then to overwater a large plant in a smaller container. As long as the soil mix is well draining and your not over doing the watering it should be ok.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annonacin amounts in Annona fruits.
« on: June 01, 2016, 01:20:11 PM »
I found this interesting FDA lab study done recently on Annona fruits. For those with concerns with the toxicology of the fruit and its affect on cells. After reading through it, it seems that Rollinia, Atemoya, Sugar Apple, and most likely Cherimoya and Custard Apple have very low amounts of Annonacin and Squamocin. Pawpaw on the other hand has extremely high amounts with high amounts in soursop varying. It seems the annona fruits with the most domestication benefited greatly with drastically lower amounts of Annonacin.
