Tropical Fruit Discussion / avocado graft question
« on: May 22, 2014, 01:06:32 PM »
I bought a grafted cado which I later did a Veneer graft on but the top part die after a while; but the low
Small low portion attached to the rootstock is alive and green; but I dont see any buds on it; my question is if in the future is a chance this little piece regenerate some new buds; I wouldn't like to decapitate it as I would lose the top graft;

Where my wife is from Tuxpan ;Veracruz; is call Sapote Domingo; and it takes cold in winter time probably down to 8/10 celsius sometimes; the variety who grows there is a monster of the size of a large coconut! I have know two seedlings from there one of them is strongly variegated; Im gonna used to graft it on the other one to cocktail them save space!

Fruit is Big as a coconut eh? How large does this variety grow?  I got a seedling & looking for a superior cultivar to graft, how does this giant coconut size fruit taste as compare to other variety you have eaten in the past?  :)
I have only taste two different varieties one from here pacifica coast, and this large one I mentioned from Atlantic coast being this one more on the crunchy flesh, with Nice apricot Sweet flavor

Hi Mike, the only Achachairus I have tried, which are the ones in Luc's pic, were kind on the sour side for me, hupps I forgot I also tried a copule from my own tree last year, the Very first time setting fruit and the leves of acidness was the same one, the Luc' limoncillo has several stages depending the ripeness of the fruit, when the fruit is just ripe is a mix of strongly accentuated sweet & tart flavours, but with I like the best of this stage is that the outer skin is edible, delicious flavour, crispy, firm, this is a plus versus Achachairu cause it's skin is not edible , so this helps whith flesh / seed ratio, the second stage is when the fruit is overripe the crunchy skin
Gets soft and mix with the inner flesh to become only one part, the hole fruit becomes soft and the flavour
Change to more lemony with a full sweetness with a last acid note, as about the size as you see in the pic
A large Limoncillo could be 4/5 times bigger than Achachairu , hope that helps, by the way , eaten too many in one seat could be proclive to moctezuma' revenge ! Lol

Grows like a weed here! mostly along the rivers, people really go after the fruit, you see all kind older, middle age and kids with the long poles trying to get the fruit, which I heard is rich in protein, and I think because the firm flesh has a good potential to cook with it, flowering is just starting now

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango grafting success
« on: February 18, 2014, 01:48:40 PM »
Mango Cajeta is from Manzanillo , Mexico , West Pacific coast, from a an Single Orchard of 22 hectares , single owner , who purchase this land with the trees all ready bearing fruit in 1957! Every year he sells all
The fruit locally as people is eagerly waiting for this delicious mango , who starts appearing in March, the owner Guadalupe Arteaga either doesn't know or doesn't want to tell the origin of this mango as never happen to see myself a mango like this anywhere in Mexico, is a poliembrionic mango, of very good quality
He call it Cajeta cause is very sweet, weight is about 400/600 gr with a light yellow , brown outside color,
Really the Origen of this mango is a mystery to me as I said the owner is reticent to give information about
It,

Happy to see they took Harry!
Yes indeed is a Very  tasty  mango with no fiber, Very Sweet ,Orange firm flesh , creamy , with Orange notes,it comes out in Early March and goes for an around 5/6 months fruiting season here in Mexico
And the closer you get to the seed there a Nice sub acid flavor that contrast with the deep Sweetness of the
Outside, on a peculiar note the skin is thin an crunchy with no flavor, so I always like to get the first 2/3
Bites with skin to over come the Sweetness, by the descripción I see on this forum, I would suppose is a mango with Very similar flavor to Lemon Zest, Im looking forward in the future to hear the reviews of this mango Cajeta from you Florida experts!

« on: January 14, 2014, 09:54:34 AM »
Congrats Oscar! That's the dream of any fruit collector, Durian in the back yard! Is this one from the large tree I saw ( ten years ago ) about the half distance between the street gate and your house, almost in front of the red rambutan trees?

993
Thanks god you're ok Adam! Wished you the best!

994
Adam , looking at your cut fruit I think there must be a lot of variation , those I tried in Tela , Honduras when visiting Lancetilla with Raul , was a lot more orange going to red in color , the fruit was very creamy like the texture of durian . Has been several years so Raul if you read this , correct me if I am wrong .

Yes Luc! I remember the other ones with a bright deep orange flesh, no fiber , good amount of edible flesh
An with that unique kind of acquainted wine flavor, ( too much for me one fruit is enough ) regarding the external appearance they look the same but without the wrinkles in the skin

995
This tree is Amazing , precocious bearing as short as less than a meter high, mine is continously fruiting
All year round! Is with fruit and flower all the time!

996
Yes I did, Delicious! Like a Canistel but with a wine bouquet ! The seeds didn't germinate back home!

997
Luc , remember the one we ate in Tela, in a corner outside of a school? Very good by the way! And yes taste like wine! There was the tree with fruits on it and in the ground, I also saw them in Veracruz ( north )
When visiting my inlaws, we have many trees here in Vallarta along the rivers, people call it here Sapotillo, but this ones are way inferior lots of fiber and scanty flesh, most of the trees never set fruit, the under leave is  whooly white , in Honduras is call monkikiac fruit

998
Wish you the best Adam! By the way I love your flying fox seal! Way to go!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Sapodilla that tastes like mamey
« on: December 22, 2013, 11:00:14 AM »
I was at Zill's a while back...and tasted a sapodilla that had a flavor of both mamey and sapodilla.

Does anyone know what type this may have been??  It was really nice.

Couldn't you just ask Zill's? ;)
that's a novel idea!
One of the employees was eating the fruit, and didn't know what cultivar it was (the fruit even had some red in the flesh, like mamey) Yes I suppose I could ask Zill, but was wondering if anyone else had tasted a sapodilla that was reminiscent of mamey..and if they knew the cultivar name.

I suppose this fruit I tasted was much more special (rare) than I realized.

but I saved the seeds!!
A friend of mine here in Vallarta has some of those! Is a Sapodilla but with a kind of red flesh instead of the regular beige/ brown  one, and a some mamey notes, some people believe is a hybrid between these two, hence the popular name here " mamey- sapote" as sapodilla is refer here as " Chico Sapote"
