Citrus General Discussion / Re: Trees waking up, what now?
« on: January 24, 2017, 10:15:26 PM »
From what I've gathered, I need to spray Copper starting in April, then again in May and June to control both Greasy spot and Melanose.  Does that sound right?

I usually spray dormant oil with soap to control spider mites and that seems to work pretty well.

When should I start fertilizing?

Yeah... I had the same thought about seeds, but the guy selling them (at buyrareseeds.com) claims they are "F1 seeds" from controlled pollination.  I'm not that familiar with the practice.  He claims the plants will be correct type, but any seeds from the next generation would not be correct.

I bought seeds of a few varieties to see if that helps spread out the season.  I'm guessing it will be a couple years until I get fruit from them, but there isn't much selection of plants in my area.  I ordered Black Knight, Panama Red Pandora, and Panama Gold.

sildanani, You have the same plant from the same place as mine.  This was the first year with it in the ground.  The frost froze it back to the last few inches of the plant (was 10 feet in each direction), but I will try to protect next year.  I wasn't sure how much cold it would take.  It did okay until the two nights that were 21 and 20 F back to back.  Most of my other plants did much better in the temporary greenhouses.  Is your plant is a greenhouse then?

My Valencia did that, but it was a 5' wide and tall tree in a container that got moved around a bit.  I think the stress of moving it and over-/under-watering it caused it to bloom, drop some of the fruit and bloom again.  I have both full-sized and mid-sized fruit on the tree now and it's trying to put out flower buds again.  Hopefully, now that it's in the ground, it will settle down.

Maybe just over-watered?  I'd pull it out of the pot and take a look at the roots.  If they are nice and white and firm, that's okay.  If they are black and mushy, it's been over-watered and the roots are rotting.

Most of the trees in my temporary greenhouse are starting to form leaves and flower buds.  What fertilizer and spray schedule do you use?

I've noticed some spider mites and those corky leaf spots I've posted about before (maybe greasy spot and something else?).  Not sure, but I'd like to be better about spraying this year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Passion Fruit All Year?

Are there any passion fruit that produce all-year?

I've been enjoying my first crop of Possum Purple more than I thought I would.  Pretty sure it only fruits once a year (in the fall), so I'd like to add other varieties to fill in throughout the year.

Any suggestions?

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Newbie question - yield and tree size
« on: January 11, 2017, 02:31:45 PM »
Since nobody else has stepped in here, I'll take a stab at it.

The size of the tree is mostly influenced by the rootstock that it's grafted onto.  You're probably looking for trees on dwarfing rootstock to fit in your greenhouse.  I would grow the biggest tree you could fit into your greenhouse to max out your lemon production.

I don't have much experience with lemons specifically or trying to stagger different lemon varieties for year-round lemons.  If I was you, I would try a few different varieties.  I have Ponderosa lemon, Meyer lemon and New Zealand Lemonade, but they are too small to be of much help here.  You can search for "best tasting lemon variety" and get a bunch of info to go off of.

Laaz - Oh yeah?  I lived in Archdale by Bosch when I was in high school.  We should meet up sometime.  It would be great to talk to someone with more experience than I have.

Just looking through some disease pictures online.  Could it be Citrus Melanose?   Or Greasy Spot getting started?  I have seen Greasy Spot on my Valencia.

Just noticed the same corky raised bumps on a few other plants.  Could this be citrus canker by any chance?

I have read that Valencia orange is a "vigorous" tree.  But not sure how much different that is than other orange varieties.

I was walking in the garden and saw a few passion fruit that fell in the grass.  It turned out to be about 30 or so mostly green fruit. A few had changed colors, so I brought them inside.  I didn't think they would ripen off the vine.  Are these okay to eat?

I got an email back from Lara this morning.  They said it is "Possum Purple".  That makes a lot more sense.

Citrus General Discussion / Off-season Valencia Oranges
« on: December 29, 2016, 07:55:20 PM »
So my Valencia orange bloomed off-season a couple of times and set some fruit.  I had some from Summer 2015, Winter 2015 and a regular bloom in Spring 2016.

Some of the fruit have been hanging for 18 months and are very large, but they have not colored up completely.  They still have a little green on the peel.  Should I wait until the Summer to pick them or just pick them as they size up?

The plant bloomed in Sept/Oct, if I remember correctly.  The vines were about 12' long in each direction along a fence.  It set about 50 fruit.  They grew to about this size and then slowed down as the cold weather approached.  After the first frost, the leaves were burned and most of the fruit dropped.  A few hung on another couple of weeks and started to color up a little bit, drop and wrinkle a little.  The fruits in the picture are some of those.  They are not fully purple, but they are also definitely not the "baseball sized" I keep hearing about flavicarpa fruit becoming.

I bought a passionfruit vine from Lara in Homestead last Summer.  It wasn't labeled and my Spanish is not great.  I thought they said it was "yellow" passionfruit, but it recently fruited and the fruits are turning purple.  They are slightly larger than ping-pong balls.  Any ideas what variety they carry?  The flowers looked like flavicarpa to me, but I don't have much experience with passiflora.

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Flower fragrance

Bouquets de Flours citrus trees are supposed to have the strongest/best smell and really put on a lot of flowers.  I don't have one, but will probably order one and try to find a spot for it.  Not sure how often they bloom though and their fruits are not edible.

Meyer lemon is supposed to be one of the better smelling ones that has edible fruit, but to me it smells like citrus blossom with a hint of artificial grape flavor or something like that.

The one that smells the best to me out of all of my current trees is Valencia orange.  It's smells amazing and I cant get enough of it.  I have one by my side door and you can smell it 15 feet away when it's covered in blooms.  Has small flushes throughout the year between the big blooming flushes.  Plus, you get edible Valencia oranges.

FOW SOR = "Frost OWari, Sour Orange Rootstock"?

That's my guess anyway.

Newbie question here.  Bud wood from CCPP, but where do you get rootstock?  Are you air layering branches of Swingle?

Citrus General Discussion / Re: Using Grow Lights during Winter

In my makeshift grow room, a lot of plants are flowering now.  Especially my Owari Satsuma that usually looks so scraggly.  I'm seeing growth flushes on some of my small new plants from Harris, but not a crazy amount.  I left my Valencia outside, since it is so large and it has a lot of small fruit on it now from a recent flowering.  It's close to the house, but has already seen a few 28 degree nights with a makeshift cardboard cover.

I'm no expert, but if the plant is getting too much water and you suspect the manure is part of the problem, I would dig and re-plant.  Take a look at the roots and see if they are okay.  Maybe mix in more sand this time and plant on a small mound.  Or maybe a little further from the canal.

Citrus General Discussion / Corky leaf spots?

Just noticed these on my King tangerine.  These raised corky lesions are only on a few of the top leaves on one branch.  What do you think?  Citrus scab?  Treat with copper?

Citrus General Discussion / Improving drainage for citrus
« on: January 04, 2016, 10:46:34 PM »
I'm trying to figure out how to improve drainage at my new house, so I can plant a bunch of fruit trees.  There is a small stream nearby and the water table is only 2 1/2 to 3 feet down.  When it rains, the water just sits in puddles on the surface for a few days.  I thought the soil would improve by adding a lot of compost, but it still drains poorly.

I read adding gypsum would help with clay soils, but I'm not sure.  Any suggestions before I build raised beds?
