Citrus General Discussion / Re: Flower fragrance
« on: February 06, 2016, 12:26:29 PM »
The Meyer does have a strong, almost perfumey scent. My grapefruit recently bloomed and I find I like its fragrance better as its similar to that of the Meyer but milder, not as heady.

Mr Millet what about acidifying the high bicarbonate water?

What do you lower the pH of the foliar spray to, and do you use a surfactant?

Very impressive plants Tuan and I'm Virginia no less. Couple questions lol: what do you feed them with to get them looking so nice? Is that a sapodilla in the second photo in a pot? I may be mistaking a citrus' leaves for it. Is that a grapefruit or pommelo in the third and fourth photos and if so what kind? Are most of your plants, citrus especially, potted and what mix do you mainly use? Have you also experienced the delayed/non-existent bloom on your mangoes that a lot of us have, or have you been able to control conditions in your green house such that they were able to bloom normally? Anything special for the pineapple? That's it I think lol, and again your stuff really does look great :)

Citrus General Discussion / New Mandarin Questions
« on: January 27, 2016, 02:17:17 PM »
Hi all,

So on Monday I went to the store that had the 50% off potted plant New Year Clearance Sale this week, and wanted to pick up a Navel Orange but of course they had all been sold barely 2 hours into the first day of the sale lol. One of the workers said he didn't think they had any more in stock but that they were bringing out more citrus Wednesday, so today I went there again today and there weren't any Navel Oranges ( frown emoticon ) but for the first time they had Satsuma Mandarins! I had never seen these here before, and have no idea how they do in my climate besides probably still being green when they ripen, but they seem like a fair substitute for the Navels, and the little tree is loaded with fruits, so I got one! I'm 99.9% certain it's an Owari although the variety isn't labeled; it's from California and likely to be the most generic variety sold which I understand is Owari. Not sure what this rootstock tag means? 'SOR' might be 'Sour Orange' but not sure what 'FOW' means.

Here's a body shot:

Some of the developing fruits:

Even has flowers:

Ambiguous tag:

Anyone else growing mandarins, especially in containers, and if so how? I'm interested in a cultivation regime, especially for those in more southeastern regions or warm climate areas. Do you think I could up pot it? I'm thinking a 5 gallon to start with. Also any ideas on the rootstock? Never seen a tag with that label before. I'm not even sure which nursery the tree is originally from, but I like it so far  8)

Feel free to confirm whether the tree does look like an Owari!

When you say lowest tolerance for cold you mean it can take the lowest temperatures or that its temp range is more restricted?

So I was looking at the weather report and last Friday alone we had 2.6" of rain. Considering we are [supposed to be] deep into our dry season, stuff like that is probably contributing to the lack of blooms for the mangoes here.

El Nino

El Nino occurs in the Pacific Ocean, not the Atlantic which is where my island is located. California does get their rain in winter since its on the West Coast, but we get ours in the summer and all the wet weather right now is very out of the ordinary.

el nino is caused by warm pacific waters, but causes cooler/wetter weather throughout the southeastern us going into the caribbean

Well I learned something today! :)

No I meant just what I posted, that I thought the general consensus was cherimoya > reticulata. In layman's terms cherimoya is better than/preferred to reticulata.

If it's a tasty variety you could perhaps root a cutting of it to add your own tree; pomegranate cuttings root very easily.

That's definitely a pomegrantate, and white arils around the seeds too very nice. How does it taste?

Hi Tuan, nice soursop tree. Slightly off topic but what is that nice citrus to the side of your tree?

Anyone know the suitability of a. reticulata (custard apple) as rootstock?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Opinions on Jackfruit from Nursery
« on: January 15, 2016, 09:30:55 AM »
Hello, was wondering if anyone thought this looks like a decent Jackfruit tree to start with? It's at a local nursery for $60, and they very rarely have them so I don't necessarily want to let the chance go to grow one if I don't have to. I love the fruit, first had some in Jamaica and even though we're also tropical here I haven't seen anyone growing any. Did some research and found out they're pretty precocious so my gardening bone is itching.

Any general cultivation advice and growing tips also welcome. Hopefully this picture posts properly:

Funny you should mention the lake as one of the local nurseries gets almost all their smaller fruits from Dewar Nurseries in Apopka (figs, blueberries, goji berries, blackberries etc) and the blues for example came last December already flowering so now I know why they had enough chill. Since they're on the fringe zone I don't know how they'll fare here (sweetcrisp I've seen here but probably wouldn't work) but I got 2 Sunshine Blues as they're supposed to need some of the lowest chill. I've heard good things about Emerald, do you acidify your water?

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Re: Acidify soil for blueberry?
« on: January 15, 2016, 09:16:55 AM »
I've read about and seen pictures of a setup that has done very well for someone where they dug a wide trench of sorts about 3 feet deep, lined the walls with sheeting to stop the native soil from gradually raising the pH, laid some logs on the bottom and then filled in the rest with a peat and pine bark mix and planted the berries like that. They use normal acidifying fertilizers but it seems easier to keep the pH down and their plants grow well, I'll try to find the link.

Phil how cold do you get such that you presumably get enough chill hours to grow blueberries but can also grow dragon fruit?
Mark that's a great photo, are those also citrus in the front and to the right of the grapefruit?

Oh okay, I was trying to figure out how to break up mine. I might just take a hammer to them and see if the right size comes out.
