inorganic fertilizer besides oscomete especially in planting mix.....no water when it's above 90 (at least once even twice a day), wind, high ph, sensitive to any type of disease sprays even when heavily deluted.....could be as simple as somebody in you neighborhood spraying round up on a windy day would do it in

Anyone know how to contact the growers in the Salton Sea?

A couple of articles with leads found with a Google search.

As Simon said, the major growing area is the Coachella Valley around places like Mecca.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: calcium sulfate and agricultural sulfur

If you have a calcareous soil, it's almost impossible to buffer it with sulfur.

thanks Mark yeah I will only out a lil once a year

Sulfur will take a while to alter your ph significantly, maybe a couple of years.  Why are you using calcium sulfate?

the guy at farmers supply talked me into it over sulfur ....did research and it's oh neutral :/ but my soil needs the calcium anyway

Yes, you can use the two together. That's what I do. The top several inches of my soil is Ca deficient, being mostly black compost (the ratio of Ca to K is too far towards the K end). So, I use gypsum to add Ca, which has had notably positive effects on brix, flesh firmness, and flesh color. I use the sulfur to lower the pH to the low 6'es.

isn't gypsum the same as calcium sulfate? I googled it and they use the words interchangeably

my understanding is that calcium sulfate has neutral ph where as sulfur would lower it.  if I'm already using calcium sulfate can I still use sulfur to lower my ph? I just afraid of sulfur overdose.  if I can appply at same time or wait a couple weeks apart?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Too much sun for my young lychees?
« on: August 10, 2017, 11:07:07 AM »
jose your tree looks fine lychee trees can easily handle full sun they actually prefer that.  Unless it's a new airlayer.   But from your picture it looks like minor salt/fertilizer burn or it's just leaves aging.  If you want to move the flush along try fertilizing it but be careful not to over do it.

lol all that and no solution to your problem :) I would keep it in shade until weather cools down a bit.    No more fertilizer no more sprays no more anything until you see a decent flush.   Water it Once a day twice if it's above 90.   Prune off all dead branches tip until you see live wood.  Let it flush hopefully all the watering you will do will wash out most of the fertilizer.   Once you get a decent flush and it's able to mature you can post pics and update.   Also try letting the water you use sit for over 24hrs

I have minimal  experience with planting trees in container long term but I do have two lychee trees in ground, Mauritius and Sweetheart.   I can safely say that the extreme heat and over fertilizing played a big role in your trees condition.  Like Andrew stated lychee trees loves water so it's very hard to over water them.  If temps are above 85 water it at least once a day over 95 I would do it twice a day.  Make sure it's in the early morn or late afternoon.   I use 1 teaspoon per gallon for fish/kelp and do it twice a week.  A lil goes a long ways.   Also oscomete is a great slow release balanced fertilizer.
The other thing is we see something wrong and we do too much trying to fix it.   Even with the best intentions it might be fatal for lychees.  With lychees the less inorganic intervention the better.
It one of the most demanding tree that i have and that's them being in ground.  I could only imagine how It be if they were in a container.  If you can put it in ground. If you get another try emperor lychee they are more suitable as a container.

Are you still giving the lychee fish fertilizer?

Yes.  I fed all of my trees with liquid fish weekly in spring.  I dont think I over did it.  I mixed 2 tbsp per gal of water and I water like 3 plants per gal.  all of my trees are looking healthier than ever except for this one.

do you have other lychee tree in container?  if so they are healthy?

Thanks guys.  Yeah, I should be suffering this terrible Florida/Ca/Tex addiction soon.  My first Sweet Tart was a culinary experience....to put it mildly.

hey mark what kind of potting mix do you use and what's your fertilizer regiment for your mangos?

50/50 organic/inorganic.   Not picky, whatever is on hand.  For young mangos I give them a high N food - 12 mo. Polyon, 18-4-9 with micros.  Am backing off on the N and increasing K now that they're older.

thanks Mark

Now we know what everyone is talking about!!! DAMN! We have never tasted anything so fine, so exotic and complex. You just can't stop wanting more. Doesn't taste like any "mango" we've had either, probably cause store bought are no good and the breeder Gary Zill is sooooo GOOD at what he does. Wife didn't like Mallika. She loves this. Rob was right, it was a bit over-ripe but not mushy.  No fiber.  Brix = 19*. Will pick one tonight that is just showing color for the wife who'll make her famous mango salsa using red onion, serranos, etc.

Using a large S/S spoon it was easy to scoop out most of the meat as a big chunk.  I put an edge on one side of the spoon with a WorkSharp and 80 grit belt, then a 220.

Eyes closed, gnawing on a bone like a dog, I'm in mango heaven!

nice congrats! still waiting for my tree to mature you should patent your mango spoon :)

So this week I was assigned To Work in the Jacksonville office , I took my family with me and decided to have a look at our old house, Sadly the new owners ripped out every single fruit tree, Banana tree I ever planted there 😳

That was a sad site to see, my Girls couldn't Belive it ..
Even the Citrus trees I planted ..

I went to google earth to see the rear of the house and they also removed the trees in the rear .

I had planted trees on both sides , rear and front of the house ..
That is crazy ..

Here's a google earth pic ..

Haha different strokes for different folks the new owner probably thought the old owner was just as crazy :)

for the reed did you need to do any size control?  I just bought a reed from la verne and it's the first tree that for me I didn't need to do anything to it.   It was a lil over two feet tall and had really nice branching to it.  Do you suggesting tipping to induce more branching?
