been there. Arid place, didn't see much fruit  but, was not looking for it either. anyway, small island, just ask the locals there;  all of them either speak English or Spanish. good luck.

thanks.

are they known to grow super slow? I think I planted this almost two years ago. took a long time to germinate but, regardless it seems to be in no rush, just taking its time.

I planted 3 varieties I found at lowes, gave each one a sunny 20 foot span on clothesline & didn't expect much but now its year two and already I got a taste from two varieties, carlos , & noble; still waiting on southern home. definitely not a big crop by any means but I have been able to snack on them. I was pleasantly surprised was not expecting fruit until year 3 or 4.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Best tasting Mangos of 2016
« on: August 01, 2016, 09:02:21 PM »
so far... I've been surprised by:

dot
Juicy peach
pina colada
and a butter cream mango (34-12 ? ) that I sampled at zill's.

What is flavor profile of butter cream?

the butter cream i had was like a really nice really, smooth texture, juicy and sweet duncan-esque type flavor specially near the peel but not overpowering.

my Cuban grandmother would use the soursop to flavor milk, and it was delicious. she called it "champola" it was just the flesh of the fruit added to milk (sugar optional) and then chilled. mmmmm! I have also tried it with sugar apple and its great.

guava eluded me again this year, and I'm still not having any luck with a sweet tart that's "at the right stage". Was excited to get my hands on a cotton candy mango but it was not fully ripe and although sweet, it had no cotton candy flavor to speak of.

I have had it in a salad before.  prepping it ruined the knife I used even though I first put some lemon juice on the blade.
to prep it: peel back the petals until you get to the ones that are white, then cut it up & soak it in some water that has lemon and salt on it to both season and prevent oxidation.  afterward I threw it in the salad. doesn't really have much a flavor. it has a cabbage like texture.
I hope that helps.

« on: July 14, 2016, 11:57:45 PM »
mango is just warming up as far as I'm concerned. I'm hoping to evaluate mostly, late season varieties and maybe squeeze in two more trees in the yard. I also really want to get my hands on properly ripened: guava mango, cotton candy, sweet tart, and honey kiss.

I went today for the first time ever. I was not impressed, a total let down for me. I got there around 9:40 a.m. paid the $25 entrance fee, got 2 bischochuelo mango trees, stood in line for an uneventful $2 mango tasting where they asked you to rate your top 3.

all they had to sample at the tasting was: fairchild, angie, rosigold, pkm, mallika, manillita?, prieto, cogshall, and NDM.
with that selection of mangoes its no wonder their fairchild mango rates high every year as they say in their literature.

the talks were not scheduled to start until 1pm and I was gone by 11 a.m. I wanted to stay around for the talks but just couldn't find enough things to do to pass the time. The event was definitely smaller than I thought it would be although it was cool to see all the 220 or so varieties of mangoes they were going to be auctioning sunday. it was obvious some people would be paying a whole lot of money for some mango varieties that will never ripen properly but there were also vendors there with some seriously ordinary yet overpriced mangos, some being even sold out of season and for $5 a mango.  >:(  a den of thieves. lol I felt like overturning the tables Jesus style.

I thought about taking a garden tour to pass the time but they also had cancelled the garden tours. they had a sign up saying it was for our own safety ::) that's when I decided It was way too hot and I had better things to do like get some guarapo and take my trees home.  ;D

I would really like to visit their farm "williams grove" in homestead. but I heard that farm and their smoothie stand has been closed??! can anyone confirm?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Macadamia trees for south Florida

Contact George Anderson
Anderson Macadamia Arboretum Nursery & Grove

LaBelle, FL

(727) 643 1424

He has a huge variety of Macadamia trees including Hawaiian and Australian types.

thanks, I will follow up on your lead.

are there any other nut trees that will  produce in South Florida that I have overlooked besides:

tropical almond: too tall, too much work to get at the nut.
cashew: dont enjoy the fruit, and too much work to process the cashews.
and coconut.

any others?

what are my choices and what variety performs best in South Florida? only varieties I have seen around me are Arkin Papershell, Beaumont, and Dana white. is that all that is recommended for this area? any dwarf varieties?

Those are the commonly available varieties.   Main differences are flower color and leaf margins.  Paper Shell are no easier to "process".  Dont know of any dwarfs here (in existence?).  How small are you looking for?  Mine is a beautiful tree but totally ornamental  as the squirrels strip the tree long before the nuts are ready to harvest.  I can post a picture if anyone is interested.

i was thinking 15' max height but 8' would be preferred. So none of the three varieties stand out in flavor or reliable production etc. ?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Passionfruit Trellis Ideas
« on: November 20, 2015, 01:45:45 PM »
Just hedge it to the size of your arrangement.

It will fill that space in and make a big square hedge.

does passion fruit benefit from training? producing higher yields etc the way grapes are pruned? most people I've seen just let them grow wildly on a fence.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Tethering branches to shape a tree
« on: November 20, 2015, 01:05:30 PM »
How long should a branch remain tethered to train their growth?  I have young Jackfruit tree with a vertical growth habit that I want to shape into a broader tree with more horizontal lateral branches.  Yesterday I tethered some branches into a more favorable position.  How many months must the tethers stay on the tree to train these branches?

Similarly, I have a Black Sapote that shows the effects of strong trade winds so I tethered a couple of branches to balance the tree.  How many months?

I do prune to encourage broader shaped trees, but these trees needed more.

Thanks,
John

I was just considering doing the same thing to my jackfruit tree and was wondering if you had any success?
