Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Free/trade 33 Carrie mango seeds
« on: July 27, 2013, 03:43:45 AM »
I have 33 Carrie mango seeds from today. They are mostly cleaned. I used the mango in the dehydrator. I will be at the 208 farm aka BRFVC place tomorrow morning. I will bring them with me if someone wants them or they can be picked up near 441 & 595 later in the day. I will be home on Sunday also. See my map.
If you have some mango budwood that I can use that would be great.
Renee

Sorry I don't have one, but I have seen them lately at HD.

How wide is the 25 gallon? I might know where you can get some, but these pots looked to be about 2' wide.

I recommend buying from http://www.going-bananas.com/ to get high quality disease free plants.

Going Bananas is a great place. If you ever make it to South Florida you should go. I got my Rajapuri there about 17 years ago. Its a small plant about 6-8'. They drive you around in a golf cart and show you the plants and you can pick them out. Back then and probably still are grown in the field and not in pots.
When I went I was looking for the perfect looking plant in the kind that I wanted. I finally found it. He dug it up and then proceded to chop the top off. What???!!!! Why did you do that to my perfect looking plant (leaves)? He explained and then it made sense. I didn't have a clue back then. Now the leaves don't have to be perfect as long as it is a healthy plant. It is still growing in my yard.

Unfortunately I can only trade Carrie. That is the only mango tree that I have, but it is big. About 30 feet so I have lots.

Hi Katie,
Sorry for the late reply. I ended up making a mango buttercream and the cake was coconut. People told me that it tasted really good. This past weekend I was at a grafting class at the RFVCB 208 gardens. Richard the president came up to me and said how good he and his wife thought it tasted. He brought some home for her. I took that as a nice compliment since I had completely forgotten about it. The cake was covered in fondant. The sides had a basket weave to look like a basket and the top had handmade fondant fruit that looked real. Now I just need to get my website up and going.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Smathers white sapote
« on: July 17, 2013, 11:56:11 AM »
Actually for the past 40 years here in CA the Casimiroa tetrameria has been called yellow sapote, even wooly leaved white sapote.

http://www.crfg.org/pubs/ff/whitesapote.html

CRFG did taste tests of the yellow sapotes and published results in their yearbook. (#6 and #7 were considered the best).

Using taxonomical terms reduces confusion as even the lucuma is at times called yellow sapote.

The "dwarfed" white and yellow sapotes in the photos were both grafted and are easily more than 10 years old, never to get any bigger.  Grafting techniques can, and will, effect eventual tree size, hardiness, health.

The dog was not grafted.

What is the best way to graft to keep it small and healthy? I didn't know different ways of grafting had any effect on size or health.

There are a couple of trees in west Davie that are about 30 feet. They produce a lot of fruit. As for taste to me it taste good, but then it is the only one I have ever eaten. Others say it tastes good.
I don't know of thay are named varieties or not. I can check next time I go out there.

Ya let me know what they are when you next go out there

I will. I ate the fruit and have a couple of seeds I planted. I forgot to get the name so I also need it.

Home Depot sells Mauritius, but I don't know if they will have any in stock. I got mine there and they are in stock at my local HD right now. They also sell mangos, but from your list I have only seen Carrie. Lowes carries some fruit trees. The plants might be bigger than you want to take home. Depends on what size you are looking for

Are you going to Tobago also? There are some nice beaches there and not to many people. You can get Angostura bitters for a good price in case someone wants some.

I have a Carrie tree maybe we can trade something.

Does anyone eat cordia obliqua? Do you eat it raw, cook with it, make jams? Let me know what you think of this fruit.

I bought a nice size jaboticaba in a 3 gallon pot from PIN. It is multi (2) trunked. The second trunk I want to graft on a different variety on it. Also bought 3 orchids, a pond plant, mameys and mangos. Had a good time.

Seeds removed, fingers licked, bag pressed flat and sealed with a candle.  This bag of durian has been frozen for 8 months.

Sealed with wax? What kind of wax? Is this a zip lock bag or a regular bag?

We are headed down now. Hope to be able to taste amd buy some rare fruit and to find a couple of trees. Will stop by PIN booth.

Don't want to intrude on your thread edzone9, but I have a question.

What can be done with the roots when they look like edzone9's tree? What if they don't want to straighten out very much? Does it hurt to cut some of the circling roots off?

Thanks Berto and Dreramfrutas for the info. I will definitely start considering taking trips with him so I can taste the fruit myself and not rely on his feedback. Besides he is not to keen on mango like I am so that should tell me something.  :o I just always considered it to much trouble to go for a 1-3 day trip.
