Tropical Fruit Discussion / Coconut Cream - Low Wind Tolerance?
« on: October 26, 2012, 10:37:33 PM »
Anyone else have wind tolerance problems with their 'Coconut Cream' tree? This is the second time in the past few months that my CC has lost a decent sized limb in the wind when nothing lost anything.

I remembered a post on the forum a few months ago with Seadation's 'CC' that was broken at the graft line in the wind. I've never seen that happen before. Here's the link to the post and pics: http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=898.0

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Places to Visit in the Philippines
« on: October 20, 2012, 09:53:51 PM »
Someone I know will be taking a trip to the Philippines in the next few weeks or so and he would like to visit fruit tree nurseries and other fruit tree related places. Does anyone have any recommendations of places to visit or people to possibly get in contact with? The person is looking to also possibly ship back a bunch of trees from the Philippines, so if anyone knows any nurseries there who are capable of prepping and mailing the trees as well that would be great. Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mamey Order from Farm Tropical
« on: August 26, 2012, 02:48:59 PM »
I ordered a box of mamey from Farm Tropical (www.farmtropical.com) a few weeks ago and I've been meaning to post a review of my order and the fruit quality. It was shipped USPS and I think I received it the following day. Even though it was not in shipment for very long all the fruit arrived perfectly ripe and if they were in shipment for one extra day they would likely have been over ripe. I think Farm Tropical accounted for short shipping time and included fruit that were riper. It was nice not having to wait a few days after I got the fruit for them to ripen.

I got 5 mameys and one avocado, I am not sure what cultivars they were though. I included a picture of the mamey cut open so maybe someone could identify it. I only made one milkshake and froze the remainder of the fruit. I cut them all open and put the pulp into a few zip lock bags and flattened them so they would be easier to blend later on.

The box came in good condition with no damage to it.

The box opened. Everything was packaged neatly and individually covered in the foam(?) wrapper. Above and below the fruit had paper as cushioning if I remember correctly.

Here is one cut open. Does anyone know what cultivar it is?

I used Noel's recipe to make an awesome milkshake.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Jumbo Fruit Tasting at Harry's
« on: August 22, 2012, 11:23:46 PM »
The fruit were exceptionally large at Harry's place today. The rollinia was good. I didn't taste as much lemony taste as with other rollinia that I've had. but the flavor was pleasant. We had two different types of dragon fruit. Physical Graffiti and Purple Haze I think. They were both good. The pineapple was a Sugarloaf that was sweet with very low acidity.

Here are the remnants of a jackfruit approach graft that Clint did on Harry's Black Gold x Tabouey tree. It looks as though Harry's gardener drove over the pots that were resting on the ground with his mower.

Anyone know where I can get a Nadir avocado tree in S FL? If not a tree, then budwood? Thanks!

I recently got a few malay apple seeds from Sadhu at http://organicfarm.net/default.htm

From one seed I got 19 plants!! The pic below shows all the plants I got from 1 seed. The seed was larger than the rest and when I first began to split it up, there appeared to be only around 8 plants but there were many tiny parts of the seed that created had their own tap roots so I pot them in an individual pot. In one pot I put three that did not sprout from the top but only had tap roots.

What's the most amount of plants that anyone has gotten from one polyembryonic seed?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Maha Chanoks smell like turnips!
« on: July 14, 2012, 12:49:59 PM »
A few of us met up at Harry's house yesterday to sample a few more mangos before the mango festival this weekend.

We got to try: Lemon Zest, Maha Chanok, Imam Pasand, Mallika, Okrung, and a few others. The LZ wasn't fully ripe so it wasn't as good as it should have been. The Imam Pasand was probably my favorite of the day. We had a Mallika that was picked yellow from the tree and one that was picked green and ripened for 9 days. More people liked the one that was picked green.

Gerry brought some Lemon Zests and Orange Sherbets but the Orange Sherbets weren't ready yet so we didn't get to try it.

Grover brought peaches he grew in NY

Box of mangos

Orange Sherbert looks a lot different than the LZ

Anyone ever had the 05? It wasn't ready so we didn't get to try it.

We tested the brix on a bunch of the mangos but I forgot to bring distilled water to calibrate it and the numbers seemed to be too high on some of them. The Mallika came in at 24 and the Okrung at 26. I will have to test again once I calibrate it.

Here is a video of Clint cutting open a flattened jackfruit. It grew between the trunk of the tree and other jackfruit.

Against better judgment, Harry invited me to his house today to join him, Sleepdoc, and Seadation for a mango and jackfruit tasting. I'll leave the detailed descriptions up to them. I will just post some pics and video from today.

Harry's malay apple has finally decided to flower after 17 years.

Sleepdoc risking his life to pick some jackfruit.

A video of Sleepdoc picking the fruit and Seadation catching it.

Seadation with two of the fruit Sleepdoc picked.

The golfcart after the harvest.

The table with some of the fruit and a bag of delicious pretzels.

Some more mango and one Hasya sapodilla.

Close up of the jackfruit.

This isn't from today but it's one of Patrick's Maha Chanoks yesterday.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mauby - Colubrina arborescens
« on: June 17, 2012, 12:44:57 PM »
Anyone growing mauby trees? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mauby

The bark makes a pretty good drink if you haven't tried it. I think different countries in the Caribbean make it differently so I can't comment on ones made other than Trinidad and Guyana. It's considered a FL native too I think but I don't know of anyone using it to make the drink here except for people from the Caribbean.

The drink is supposed to also help with hypertension: http://caribbean.scielo.org/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0043-31442005000100002&lng=en

Another article on its benefits: http://www.bbc.co.uk/caribbean/news/story/2009/12/091224_mauby.shtml

If anyone is willing to plant one in the ground and is in S FL, I have an extra tree in a 3g that I am willing to give away for free.

If you don't live in S FL, I have some seeds that I can share. I'd prefer to give the seeds to people who will plant the tree in the ground.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / The Ultimate Mango List!
« on: June 05, 2012, 10:45:07 PM »
I searched and searched Google for a comprehensive list of mango cultivars and their growth habit, seed type, season, etc. but I was unable to find any. Squam did all of the hard work and made a handy list of 365 cultivars but we need the help of all of the members to input the other characteristics of the trees and fruit and also any missing cultivars. Please let me know any other category suggestions for the list.

This list will help people with such questions as "Which mango trees will give me the longest season?" or "How big will my tree get?" and "Which cultivars can be grated for the optimal multi mango tree?".

EDIT: We now have 468 cultivars on the list!

The weight should probably be in grams.

Here is the list: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1T5yroo6oqvsERObsP-LtgS_zX43TkEMcqtf4_CajGGE/edit?usp=sharing

If you would like to be able to edit the list, please shoot me a PM with your email address and I will add you.

There is a chat feature on the right side of the list if you click the "other viewers" button. People working on the list can use this to discuss changes to the list if they need to.

Please do not delete any information on the list. If you have to make a revision of something you see as an inaccuracy please copy the incorrect information to the "notes" column and explain why you changed it. Also, Do not move around or change the format as I have it or delete any of the columns I created. If you do not like the way I have organized everything, please feel free to copy the list and modify it on your own but not modify this one.

In the book Five Decades With Tropical Fruit, Whitman says that he planned to graft durian onto South American sapote, IIRC in order to prevent the durian from being affected by Phytophthora. I can't remember what page I read it on but does anyone know if it was successful? They are both in the same family so it is a remote possibility that the graft would take so it would be interesting to try since Phytophthora is probably the main killer of durian in FL in cold temperatures was not an issue.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Eleuthera Pineapple
« on: June 01, 2012, 11:08:26 AM »
Anyone growing the Eleuthera pineapple? How would you compare the taste to other cultivars? Harry mentioned it and I've read about it in Whitman's book but I haven't seen it or tried the fruit.

Does anyone in South Florida have a Fitzpatrick or a Fairchild 2 canistel tree that I can get a few pieces of budwood from?

Thanks!
