Is this the sweet kind?

2
How much does a good size sweetheart goes for in California? I been on the lookout for one for a while now, too.

3
Congratulations, indeed.  Seeing your result give me some hope, I been meaning to do something similar to my unknown avocado tree for a while now.  Only problem is, I think tree is way too large now.

Wow that inarch graft idea is pretty slick.  might have to do like 5 or more and when established, just cut the turpentine root stock off completely for fun.

You Florida guys have all the good stuff.  Haha.

Hey Phil,  I need to make some time to go see you and pick up those Jujube air-layers.  I could help you dig up that papaya tree while I am there.  I am all booked this weekend, but next weekend I can make the time.

R,

Dennis

Wow, Good timing on this topic.  I was about to order a cotton candy plant from a seller on eBay from Florida.  I have been reading the forum for years now and am aware of the issue with turpentine root stock, but these new mango varieties and the seller's price are so tempting.  I didn't know Behl sell plant btw, I know frank does.  Behl is acutally about 20 miles from my work place so maybe I pick up a mango plant from him instead.  I send you a PM, Behl, hopefully you received it.

Can someone help me ID this Jujube variety?  I have a few Li Jujube variety but this is the one that the wife want.  This is very crunchy, watery, refreshing, but only mildly sweet.  Also, where can I get some scion woods?

Thanks.

Mimosa Nursery in LA has them.  I brought a 15 gallon for $100, not too bad.  Now, I think they sold them $100 for 7 gallon and $65 for 3 gallon.  Mine been in the ground for 8 months now and so far so good.

I've had very bad luck with industrial compost -- several years ago I tried using it frequently and killed lots of plants.  There's something about it, even when used in small amounts, that can hurt plants.  I wonder if its trace broadleaf herbicides from lawns that don't break down.

The lychee and longan love it, though.  They doing some well with a thick layer of those compost.  Banana and Sapodilla not so much.

Okay fellas, I am ready for sapodilla scion woods.  I can pay for the shipping and scion woods, let me know.  Also I will be making a trip this Saturday or 2 more weeks from now up to the LA areas so I also pick up the scion woods, then, too.

My Hasya Sapodilla is not doing so well, my wife put some compost we got from the recycler yard around the plant and it is browning/withering away.  I am, however, not sure if that is the cause for the plant demise or not.  The plant was doing so well up to that point.

My mom do however have a unknown sapodilla that I can trade some scion woods.  The fruits, a grand total of three, are medium size and round shape, not much oval.  I will take a picture and post it this weekend.

Awhile back, I saw something post a pictures of a Jabo juicer so how did they overcame the issue with grinding the seeds into pieces when bended?   I am asking because that what I am thinking of doing, too, when I get some Jabo.

Son of A! haha, you magnificent addict!  That's what popped in my head when I saw your post.  Congratulations, those two planets are beauties.  I am expecting some atemoya myself this year, been 7 years since we started them from seeds, hopefully this year, it will hold fruits.

Best of luck to you, Zone pusher.

Simon,

Thanks for the info.  I was heavily leaning toward letting it fruits and see, but the experience with the glen mango really scared me.  I think I lucked out on this lychee plant, when I planted it - there were a lot of roots in the 15 gallon buck.  We'll see.

I would love to take you up on your offer on the Glen scion woods. But I don't have much of a rootstock at the moment.  My mango manila rootstock for the Glen is not going to made it.  It was a slow two years of declines and now the last winter did it in.  I purchase a tall, nice looking kent mango (5 branches - 4 to 6 feet tall) as a rootstock for this year.  I was planning graft a cocktail mango, but that Kent mango isn't doing so hot either.  I plant it in December and maybe that was a bad idea because it is withering away right now.  I will take a pic this weekend and see what you guys think.  In retrospect, if I know about Jf or Behlgarden better rootstock characteristic for California soil, I would purchase a plant from them in September of last year when I had the chance.  Live and learn.

I am very torn by wanting fruits this year and trying to do what is best for the tree long term.  In 2013, I let a newly purchased mango (Glen) fruited, I got one fruit from it and it was the best mango I tasted thus far.  But now the graft glen is gone and all I have left of the plant is a 1ft rootstock which will probably not made it this year.  So I don't want the same thing to repeat.  I do see that this lychee is a lot more established than the mango though - bigger center branch and more branches compare to one single straight branch on the mango.

I read on Lychee online that you could double the size of the plant in 1 year if you don't let it fruit.  Has anyone try? if so how?

Will that said, I am extremely tempted to get some fruits this year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Troubleshoot Wax Jambu and Sapodilla
« on: November 17, 2015, 11:55:55 AM »
Thank you for the information and advices.  I think instead of pulling it out, I will leave it in the ground and put frost cover over it for the winter.  I don't expect major cold this winter because of El Nino - or is my thinking off on this one - would it be more colder because of El Nino.  I am a little torn, half want to pull it out and see and half want to leave it in.  the stems and branches still look good.  I going to wait till this weekend and re-evaluate, hope it not too late then.   Do you is advisable in this instance to water the Jambu once every day?  I have been watering once every two days.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Troubleshoot Wax Jambu and Sapodilla
« on: November 16, 2015, 02:45:56 PM »
Hello everyone, I plant those two trees 1 week ago.  The Wax Jambu was not water for a whole week prior to planting and the rootstock base was dried when I plant it.  Some of the leaves had already started to turn color/brownish and now it is like what you saw in the pic.  Is this plant gone?

The sapodilla, I think is okay.  I am just curious about the discoloring and spots of the leaves.

Would appreciates any feedback you guys have.

Hello everyone,

I am Dennis, I live in Escondido (parent's Place) and in Mira Mesa (my place).  I going to grow tropical plants that remember of the stuff I have growing up in Vietnam.  I currently just got Sapodilla, Mango (Kent), Lychee, Longan, Wax Jambu, and Cherimoya.  I want to get some scion woods and learn how to graft them on the different trees that I have.  If anyone in San Diego have scions or trees for sale let me know.  My parent place have a really tall and big avocado tree - looking forward to grafting as much varieties on it as I can. I would like to exchange but I don't have much if any base stock.  I will take freebies but prefer to pay something for your time and effort.

Cheers,

Dennis

« on: November 05, 2015, 06:09:25 PM »
I have the Hasya variety.  I been thinking about getting into the tropical plants for a long time.  I finally pull the trigger but I guess picked the wrong season to do it.  I been larking around here for a few years, actually.

I only have three small branches so I am not sure, I can exchange any scion woods.  Maybe the ones that I have to cut to make the graft can be use as scion woods.

I will see you guys around late spring.  Cheers.
