Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Processing cashews
« on: June 22, 2014, 01:50:07 PM »
I got the boiling idea from KarenREI on this old post: http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=6828.msg89119#msg89119

I am hoping it works.  I boiled them for about 1 hr.  The water in the pot was brownish when done, but I did not see any oil floating on top, so I don't know if it worked.
I will let them sun dry for a few days.

I will wear gloves for cracking them....how will I know if it worked or not?  Sorry- I am not going to try touching the shells for the sake of science!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Processing cashews
« on: June 22, 2014, 11:13:34 AM »
So I am trying my hand at doing something with the cashews I am growing.

I juiced the fresh fruit.   It makes a nice tasting juice- better than biting into the fruit! Added a little water and a pinch of sugar and it is good.

After a little research, I decided that roasting the nut is too risky for inside and I don't have a firepit.  (Maybe doing it on a gas grill might work next time?)  I decided to boil the oil out of them.  That is where I am now.  I am giving them 30 mins of boil.  Then I will let them dry in the sun for a few days and try to crack them with a hammer.

Any other suggestions for this time or next time?

Seriously- you guys are killing me!  after reading this thread, I "had to" buy 12 types of papaya seeds.  I don't know where I am going to plant them!
Hoping for some really sweet and low smelling ones!

Grumichama is a beautiful shrub and can be prunes easily. And the fruit is good too!

Wow- learned something new!  I have seen what  think are the same things on my trees.  I always clean if off, assuming it was bad.
I read as long as the web isn't on the leaves, it is these lice and not the worm.

But they are on my abiu, which makes small flowers off the branches.  Seems these webs will reduce/prohibit pollination....

I was told that is the secret for cocao trees also.  And it works for me.
I will try it around the annonas!

Nice!  It will be a yummy summer for you!

Yikes- short notice!
In our area, not a ton of tropical fruitgrowers/farms.  You will want to stop at the local stands- there is one on RT 187 right after the bridge as you get into Loiza.  Coco frios!

But there are a few stands along RT 3 as you go east from RT 188.

For trees, head down to Caguas botanical garden- there is a seller there.  Or just to see some things growing, the botanical gardens in SJ is ok (a couple interesting things).  For fruit- Go to the Rio Piedras market/mercado to find some stuff to taste.  The market in Santurce is smaller, not as much stuff.

Contact me, I have guests over Fr/Sat, but I may be able to have you over for a quick visit if you would like Sun or Mon. Not a ton of fruit to taste right now, but lots in flower or with little fruit sets.

The tree is probably 10 years or so.  it is about 10 feet tall.

Jay- I counted 12 flowers.   They are open only for 1- 2 days and even by the end of day 1, already there is a tiny fruit started.

Where do you get potassium nitrate?  Is there a commercial name?

I feel your pain!
I also get super low fruit set.  I have noticed that  I get at most 1-2 fruit from a few grafted trees I got here in PR and 0 from the trees from Florida. Only Julie gives me more than a handful of fruit each year.  But the wild trees that grow from seed are full of fruit.
All the trees "grow well",  I get lots of leaves.  The PR "born" trees flower, only some of the Florida "born" trees will set flower, but no fruit.

I bet it is a similar problem as Happyisland.  Would also know  how to fix it!

I have grafted, but my success rate is VERY small.  I may have to get one of you pro-grafters to come over to help.
I think Juan was doing approach grafts....that I have done with decent results.  What other type of graft would you recommend for this situation?

How cool!

It reminds me of a larger flowering Herrania.  Beautiful!

I think the manzana bananas are not very bananay.  My mom doesn't like bananas but likes manzanas.

Ha!  We would all starve! I have lots of other trees, but only a couple of each type, not like the fields of fruit on the west side!
I have 5 mangosteens planted right now.  The only hopes for another one to fruit in a few years might be the grafted one.
6 Pulasan planted- only 1 fruiting, though 4 of the other trees are old enough.
The rambutan are easy - grafted trees fruit in like 2 years, so I have 5 trees in flower now.

Some observations:
- Of the 3 trees that flowered, only 1 set fruit.  I am hoping the other trees are not males.... How many flowerings should I wait to decide if they are duds and cut them down? They are starting to throw more flowers now, so I will hope for the best.
- The one tree that did set fruit, almost every flower set, but it has slowly been dropping fruitlets.  I am hoping it decides to keep some!
-I do fertilize, but very lightly and very sporadically.

Our mangosteen has finally thrown flower buds!   Tree is  6.5 years in the ground and probably was about 3 years old when I got it.  This happy event  has been a long time coming!  I counted about 7 buds this morning...hoping for more but don't want to seem ungrateful!

Sounds like a great day-  I am very jealous!   Lucky you!

Nice haul!
Good luck growing them.
