Tropical Fruit Discussion / Raised pineapple beds a success!
« on: January 25, 2012, 10:26:43 AM »
One year ago, I made these raised beds to keep the pineapples high and dry.

Bed one is about 1/2 in fruit/flower!  The weed cloth did a pretty good job, but I did have to reach in and hand weed a little.
We just added a 3rd bed.

I think the problem comes from the common name- "Chocolate Pudding fruit", so people expect it to taste like chocolate.
When whipped up with some milk, it does look like chocolate pudding, but it doesn't taste like it.  Unmet expectations.
Out of hand, I think it is blah, but prepared, it can taste pretty good.

It looks like it was a great day.  I would have loved to have been there for that.

They are trying to get cocao back as a crop here.....who knows, maybe someday.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mysore "raspberry"
« on: January 19, 2012, 07:29:04 AM »
I planted the "wild" raspberry from the rain forest in my yard, which it promptly took over.  It never made a lot of fruit, but they had  a mild flavor (more like a strawberry).
I have since dug it up.  For me, the invasiveness is not worth the taste of the fruit + the thorns.

We call it "the fire ant dance"- where you hop around on one leg as you stamp the other foot on the ground while trying to get the shoe/socks off to wipe away the ants.  It is quite easy to recognize here- everyone in "el campo" does it....almost as popular as  Salsa!

I have 2 Burmese grapes that have horrible canker- the bark is rough and corky and falls off.
Suggestions?  I don't think there is any way to cure it, so I will probably cut them down. Should I burn the wood to prevent spread (though I haven't noticed it on any other trees)?

Hahaha!
Sometimes one has to overlook the smell (though I agree, the durian we tried in PR didn't smell much).
Both durian and dog poop have an odor, but I ate the durian.  I have not eaten dog poop (though in all honesty, it is not just the odor that is keeping me from that).

So far today- Fire ant bites.  They set up  farms around some mealy bugs in a mango tree and do not like being disturbed.  Sorry guys- you and your mealy bug farm have to go!

I tasted it for the first time last year and it was well received by most everyone in the group.

Hi All-
My name is Gwenn, I am a New Yorker that got tired of the cold and moved to PR.  I am enjoying the tropical fruit growing experience here very much.  My yard is full of lots of different types of tropical fruits, orchids, heliconias and bromeliads, all in various stages of health, happiness and age.

I am happy to see this new forum and look forward to learning and interacting with the other members.
I will see if I can get some pictures posted on this forum!
