Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Top 5 heavy producing Mango Trees?

Lemon Zest first
then Valencia Pride
out here in the desert

Squam - Edward will be my first one to ripen as well...another month maybe .... and it being (AGAIN) the only one on the tree
it's turning monstrous.........but I'm really surprised 80% of my mangoes are in the 3-5 inch range and usually I though you Florida
folks were way ahead of me with ripening as mine never flower until February.  I think I know why though, mine are growing so quickly this
year - some major heat we've had here in the desert.

35 LZ's on one tree that I'm super excited about!!!!

Gary

Brad - how do you like the Barbados Cherry?  Just ordered one for myself as I hear they do great out here
in the desert.....

That is very peculiar Doug - you being in perfect Papaya weather and all.  I can't really advise except maybe
cut the fertilizing way back and see what happens.  Could it be the drainage????  How about a picture of the tree and
what it looks like around the base of the plant.....

Joe Hewitt - you MADMAN - Good luck!!!  After you learn your lesson ( ;)) move south so you can
fulfill your dreams in retirement.

Seriously ..... I hope one or more of your investments surprise you and the rest of us - nature can
often do that!!!!!!

Brad - great job - everything looks great...the mulberry looks like a ROCK STAR producer - can't wait for mine
to grow up into a big boy like yours.....

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: May Mango update - Palm Springs, CA
« on: May 20, 2016, 05:23:50 PM »
well thank you all very much...just checked in here and see all the comments, so let's see if I can answer them:

JF - yes the rootstock could make the difference but what can I do now??? I've got a full grown tree that I HATE to hit with the spade.

Puglvr - the Glenn and Kent are both about 4-5 years in the ground from the florida trees I bought.  The Glenn suffered from me covering it with frost
cloth last summer and I lost the top part of the tree.  The Kent just seems to flush once or twice after it is done fruiting and I probably should have
taken them off the first couple years or so...but think of it this way - it does wonders for keeping it a dwarf (!!!)

knlim000 - yes you can come visit anytime I'm around - send me a PM....my fruit are so much bigger I think because of my greater heat hours earlier in the year.
That is not roofing paper to increase heat - not sure what pic you are looking at but it is probably just mulch and/or compost - see my response to ArizonaMike...

simon - LZ grafts on that Manila in front - I'd say I have about 7-8 that took after dozens and dozens of tries but they are doing well...time to graft a couple others
on to it this time of year....

ArizonaMike - yes that is shade for the CocoCream and it is a big enough pain...BUT....it is a spot to plant something as I've run out so let's see as it grows in
size to really fill that space it will do a lot more of the self-shading - just like the Edward which is in a very HOT SPOT too - just don't have the heart to give either
the CHOP....Yes, have a gardener drop me off a couple 35 gallon containers of cut grass each week that I spread around the plants building layers - I'm banking
on what you're saying to be true....any pictures you want to show at this time????

Big Manny with LZ - I'd say about half the canopy is LZ, the other part is Manila that I just find hard to hold back.
The second picture shows the top of the bottom part of the tree that is sprouting manila like crazy also.....it's a crappy
pic - I'll try to get something better when I've got more time.

thanks for the detailed analysis, Simon.  I should have a few Alphonso for tasting at my event this summer, although they all seem smallish
to me at the moment.  I too grew to LOVE that piney aftertaste of the Alphie.....now it's just time to wait.....

be well....Gary

Barath - what do you think Palm Springs would be?????

Thanks, Gary H

Tropical Fruit Discussion / SoCal Winds . . .
« on: April 29, 2016, 02:07:16 PM »
Have you Socalians noticed the great number of windy days these last 4 weeks?  I've lost a bunch of mangolets to the frequent gusts
and wonder what my future  harvest might have been like without them....and there's more coming in the next couple of days I see,
at least out here in the desert....

Nice space, Bill, for the new Mango orchard.  Is that gray soil from bags of stuff you added to fill in -
I think you said it was.  Well, good luck amigo.......glad you took the plunge!!!!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mulching mango tree with straw?
« on: April 13, 2016, 01:15:02 PM »
I don't see why not, shinzo - I don't believe it has as much nutritional value to the plants as say hay or grass but I believe it will
break down and add organic matter to your soil, and certainly help to keep it moister.....just remember to pull some of it back
away from the plants so they don't get stem/trunk rot....for me in the desert it is a no-brainer PLUS PLUS!

Amazing Stan and great work!  I guess I should never again whine about my somewhat dodgy
papaya harvest!

Zands to meet your simple criteria - Manila - but not sure why you want something
so mediocre.....LOL......

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Any chance of this LZ recovering?
« on: March 28, 2016, 11:52:35 PM »
Bummer Shane.....the severe cut sounds like the only thing to do now....
I was thinking when I planted all my trees years ago about reconditioning the
soil with all kinds of amendments, but got lazy and didn't do it - threw in a shoveful
of composted steer manure but that was it.......lucky me I guess.....So now it's just
weak fertilizer and heavy mulching for my desert mangoes and that's it.....

Good luck......Gary

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: When to cull mango fruit?
« on: March 27, 2016, 12:38:15 AM »
Yes, Clay, to back up Warren, i have heard pea-sized as well.  I'm surprised you're not going to
secretly cheat and leave a mango or two on each!!!!!!

Just kidding....hope you can make my mango tasting this summer....are you still in SoCal????

....what's your soil like - is it a quick draining porous type?  I mean unless you have some yard wide soil disease, gnappi is right -
they hate cold and wet where the trunk touches the ground.....

Tyler, just to chime in here, I think dead or dying roots would be black as wslau alluded to...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mature Mango Trees Without Bloom 2016
« on: March 11, 2016, 03:28:48 PM »
And just to confirm Rob's notation on later flowering mangoes:

The problems i have seen with late bloom that are into April is the warming temps,  or even hot temps, can have some adverse affects on the fruit setting and holding.

My experience is heat DEFINITELY affects fruit setting and holding.  I'm just about ready to cover my Edward which is displaying those BB-sized fruitlets with shade cloth cuz
they just start to drop like flies if I don't, and even if I do.  This year, it'll be a double covering of white 50% shade to see it that helps - it's in a very warm spot in the front/
south side of the house and the reflected heat is a monster, especially out here in the desert (great in winter though for fending off frosty weather!)
