Citrus General Discussion / Whats a good Citrus rootstock
« on: September 02, 2012, 09:37:24 AM »
I have heard that many of the Citrus sold in Miami are on rootstocks not well adapted to our rocky, alkaline soil. I think this true because some of my Citrus are much more needy than others. My Satsuma and Persian lime require half the fertilization that my Meyer Lemon requires. I want to keep expanding my Citrus collection by grafting new varieties on my own rootstock.

So what is the best rootstock for alkaline rocky soil? Or should I just wander Everglades National Park until I find a healthy wild tree.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grandidier's Baobab (Adansonia grandidieri)
« on: August 07, 2012, 12:25:51 PM »
I recently acquired what I was told was a Grandidier's Baobab seedling. I don't know if it really is a Grandidier's Baobab or if it one of the more common species. But regardless I am excited to have a Baobab and one day eat the fruits.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these trees and growing them particularly in South Florida. I have seen the one at Fairchild, I believe it is a Adansonia digitata. My soil is quite alkaline around 8 the last time I checked. Will this be a problem when I decide to plop it in the ground?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Finding Kepel Fruit in South Florida?
« on: August 06, 2012, 11:44:17 AM »
I am in the Redlands and am looking for a Kepel Fruit. I have been trying to find one ever since I saw the tree at the Lancetilla Botanical Garden. I know there are one or two place online that sell the seeds and i saw one guy on ebay selling a seedling for 45 dollars, but I am skeptical. Does anyone know of anywhere in South Florida where they sell them. Or do any of you have one?
