Tropical Fruit Discussion / Looking for some input (Achachairu)
« on: September 14, 2014, 04:45:49 PM »
Soooo I have 5 Achachairus which I feel are finally big enough to plant in the ground.

I am trying to decide how many I should plant and how many I should give rid of.

I have no experience eating this fruit or with its productivity. So any input would be appreciated.

So I lost the labels to a certain group of plants like 3 years ago. Through my powers of deduction I determined that they must be Baccaurea ramiflora (Burmese grape) plants because at the time those were the only ones that i thought were unaccounted for.

Yesterday, I finally decided it was time to try one out in the field so as I was sorting through the several specimens I have, looking for the best ones and I got a very serious poking.

Lo and behold my 2 or 3 largest plants had grown spines on the trunks.

Soooo does anyone know if Baccaurea ramiflora (Burmese grape) have spines or is it more probable that these aren't burmese grapes and actually some other unidentified plant.

Hey everyone, I have several large Soursop trees for sale. These trees are grown from seeds from a superior quality fruit I tasted in Honduras.

The trees are 2 or 3 years old, I forget. I have about 20, I am looking to get $45 per tree, if you buy more than one we can work out a discount. I have one of these planted out in my grove and it has held up pretty well to the winter without any protection from me.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Soncoya (A. Purpurea) Graft compatibilty
« on: September 04, 2014, 06:39:22 PM »
Does anyone have any info of experience grafting onto Soncoya?

I have had lots of trouble sprouting these seeds, I think ive only successfully sprouted 3 or 4 out of 100.

That said, the one tree I have in the ground is growing beautifully, its suffered a little at first, but it seems to have found its groove, growing quickly on my rocky alkaline soil with little to no help from me. I think its added almost two ft and three branch in the last 3-4 months alone, I have no doubt it'll be over my head by next year.

Its by far my most vigorous annona, even out pacing my native Pond apples which are my root stock of choice. Therefore, I'm curious about compatibility. Maybe this would be the ideal rootstook for Sfl

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mangifera sp.
« on: September 04, 2014, 06:10:21 PM »
Hey guys,

I was wondering why we so rarely talk about Mangifera sp. I have a couple now, Casturi, lajiwa, odorata. But there are so many others. Why aren't these more common, I know Fairchild is supposed to have quite a few of them that they use in their programs, so why don't we see more of these species available?

I know they've already figure out how to graft wani, onto pajang onto indica. So how come I can't even get a pajang mango for my collection?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Pond Apple Seeds
« on: September 01, 2014, 10:38:14 PM »
Hey Everyone,

I have tons of pond apple seeds available. I have to pick them up otherwise I would have a pond apple forest due to how readily they sprout. If anyone is interested in buying a couple....thousand, I have them available. The fruit from my trees isn't what you would call palatable, but it makes great tilapia food.

I have had good success playing and grafting these. I have successfully grafted soursop, montain soursop, custard apple (A. reticulata) and several cultivars of atemoya onto my pond apples and I know a couple other rarer annonas can be grafted on to pond apple.

So if anyone wants seeds for rootstock please contact me.

Lets put the price at 50 seeds for $5 plus w.e. shipping costs are

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Annona germination
« on: August 25, 2014, 08:20:11 PM »
I have seen this discussed in the past and I know we have dicussed gibberellic acid before, but I was think maybe it would be a good idea to create one thread with some do's, don'ts and suggestion for successful germination.

Since I am selling Annona squamosa seed I will start us off my giving a couple bullet points

  • First, they seem to have dormancy so I recommend planting them in a pot and letting them sit until at least the beginning of the following summer
  • Second, this rule seems to apply to several species of Annona, you get better germination if you plant several seeds, i.e. ten or more to a pot.
  • Also, I must emphasize, you must WAIT, be patient. Here are two anecdotes to illustrate, I planted some A. paulstris seeds back in the beginning of the year, I almost dumped the pots multiple times, two weeks ago I saw that almost all had sprouted. Another example, someone on the forum gave me a pot of A. marolo seedlings that he claimed had taken more than a year to sprout even after being treated with gibberellic acid
  • There are exceptions, I planted about 500 A. reticulate seeds in one large pot (due to laziness) and had rapid and complete germination.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Sugar Apple seeds for sale. EDIT
« on: August 25, 2014, 04:42:21 PM »
I have seeds for sale or trade. 20 seeds for $5 + shipping. If domestic I believe the shipping will be $4, when I go to the post office I will put the exact price with shipping.

The link below is to a discussion about the the sugar apple (Annona squamosa) plants I have

http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=6853.0

I would like to add. These seeds are very fresh, I had a lousy crop due to a drought at the beginning of the growing season, so I'll trying to make up some lost revenue by selling seeds.

As a result, of their freshness, I recommend you plant these seeds and set them aside. A. squamosa or at least mine seem to have a dormancy period. They don't usually sprout until the following spring or summer.

Furthermore, I recommend to plants multiple seeds in one pot, you'll get better germination.

« on: June 08, 2014, 11:09:53 PM »
So my Rollinia is finally holding fruit, I think about 10.

I also noticed that my two Rollinias have different color foliage when it emerges. My smaller tree that hasnt flowered yet has red foliage when it emerges, while my older tree has green emerging foliage.

I am curious if anyone out there can provide me with a how to cross my own Annona sp.

I.e. how would I collect and save pollen from say squamosa and then preserve it so I could use it on a reticulata or atemoya flower?

or similarly a soursop flower and use it on a pond apple flower. Especially since these species dont flower at the same time, usually??

I know this has been discussed somewhere probably, but I cant seem to find a succinct explanation

« on: March 11, 2014, 01:04:23 PM »
I've been growing and picking custard apples for a long time now, but I still feel like every year I'm just sorta guessing that it will probably ripen. This year i have a bumper crop so, I want to take some of the guess work out.
