Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Huanangui: The Paradise of the Cherimoya
« on: August 11, 2012, 06:39:30 PM »
The seeds I am growing are from a tree that produces in Miami. As far as I know there are a couple trees in the Redland area that are from seeds people have brought back with them from Cuba. I eat at least one locally grown, Green Cherimoya (A. cherimola) every year. But that does make sense because the lesser A. reticulata is much easier to come by.

I do have the Cherimoya that is discussed here, it has not flowered yet, but I don't have any problems with it.

Although the seeds were brought from Cuba. Also A. reticulata is called Red Chirimoya by Cubans, A. cherimola is Green Chirimoya

It been three cold years. I has been the oddest thing. Before 2008-2009 there hadn't been a frost in my area for 40 yrs and the last one  before that had been 40 yrs earlier.

Also I don't know if you have been to the Redland, its a miracle anything grows there. Opening even the smallest hole requires a backhoe

I didn't know they had on at Kampong, maybe I'll go pay them a visit and see if they have any tips.

@Tropicdude I am still young so I'm hoping with a little love, patience, and fertilizer I'll get to see it tower over my farm.

I already have a rainbow Eucalyptus, its been in the ground probably 3 years now. It was tiny when I bought it and now is the tallest tree around probably reaching 40 ft and 2-3ft wide. Its as tall as my Japanese Timber Bamboo

I know that haha partially the reason I want to plant one. No one would ever get lost on their way to my farm again.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grandidier's Baobab (Adansonia grandidieri)
« on: August 07, 2012, 12:25:51 PM »
I recently acquired what I was told was a Grandidier's Baobab seedling. I don't know if it really is a Grandidier's Baobab or if it one of the more common species. But regardless I am excited to have a Baobab and one day eat the fruits.

I was wondering if anyone has any experience with these trees and growing them particularly in South Florida. I have seen the one at Fairchild, I believe it is a Adansonia digitata. My soil is quite alkaline around 8 the last time I checked. Will this be a problem when I decide to plop it in the ground?

Does anyone know the soil requirements and cold tolerance on a Keppel? I am planning on getting one, but I am not sure if they can tolerate my soil unedited.

I live in the Redlands in Miami. My land has less than foot of natural soil before hitting a solid layer of limestone rock. All my planting is done by breaking and crushing the rock with a backhoe and then back filling with the soil and ground up rock. As a result my soil is quite alkaline no matter what I do.

Also normally temperatures in the 30's are a rare occurrence in South Florida, but we are going on 3 years straight of light frosts. All the Soursops in neighborhood have been killed off by the cold and there were a lot of big ones.

Does anyone know if a Keppel can handle alkaline soil short dips into the 30's?

The Pond Apples I grow in Miami are quite good. They aren't sweet but highly aromatic and smell/taste like a cross between a sour Peach and a Mango. They are not something you can eat a lot, but with a little sugar they are good.

Cuban herbal medicine claims that there is nothing better for your liver. I have had several old guajiros buy them from me for just that.

Also, no Florida pond is complete without an Annona Glabra, they are beautiful trees

The tree, I read that several have been grown in South Florida.

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Finding Kepel Fruit in South Florida?
« on: August 06, 2012, 11:44:17 AM »
I am in the Redlands and am looking for a Kepel Fruit. I have been trying to find one ever since I saw the tree at the Lancetilla Botanical Garden. I know there are one or two place online that sell the seeds and i saw one guy on ebay selling a seedling for 45 dollars, but I am skeptical. Does anyone know of anywhere in South Florida where they sell them. Or do any of you have one?
