Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: "inarching" jackfruit
« on: July 16, 2016, 03:06:54 PM »
I have done this and my current seedling bundle has been in the ground since 2011.  Not a single flower from any of the multiple bundled seedlings.  They are not completely fused but are probably at least partially fused toward the center of the bunch.  I'll take a current pic tomorrow if I get a chance.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Berry Jackfruit Seedling
« on: July 08, 2016, 11:04:53 PM »
Today Brandon and I tasted my Berry jackfruit seedling.  It is described in the link below

Best Jack I've had this year by far, and possibly my favorite overall to this point.  It's difficult to determine based on a single fruit, but this one sure seems like a winner.  Wonderful aroma, great texture - medium to firm with no gagging effect, and taste was on point.  In addition to all of that, the tree is only 2 years in the ground and should only improve.

I'm very impressed.

I am a fan of Angie, Carrie, and Valcarrie.  For me, Valcarrie is the most consistent, while Angie is the best of the 3 when all are at their peak.  Angie is also the most inconsistent of the 3.  And exactly what Jeff says - Carrie has a narrow window of quality - have to catch it at the right moment.  I disagree with Rob but I understand his position.  We all have different tastes.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: When will Haden be ready to pick?
« on: June 18, 2016, 10:35:39 AM »
No.  Wait for them to "color break".

In Haden the green part will break to yellow and the red will change to a much more vibrant red.

Keith,

Mine has been in the ground since it was about 6 inches tall.  It struggled a bit at first, but over the past 2 years it's been happy.  It's planted near some mangos and mulberrys, and gets dappled/filtered light probably 80% of the day and direct sun 20% of the day.  As it continues to grow I may trim the mango/ mulberry in such a way to favor more light reaching Luc's Garcinia.  It is planted in a unique area of my yard that has fairly moist and dark soil.

Here's mine.  I'm 6'1" and it's about chest high.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Ice Cream Mango
« on: June 09, 2016, 08:21:28 AM »
Very good description Simon.  I agree.  I have an Ice Cream that has produced 30+ mangoes over the past few years.  It is an overall very shy bearer in my experience.

The mango itself is small but has an excellent and unique flavor that most really appreciate.  I look forward to eating them every year and it is one of my most anticipated mangoes.  It almost always surprises at a tasting table, ranking quite high if not occasionally challenging for the top spot.

Those look amazing Jack !

Excellent description and write up.  That seedling sure is impressive.  Toe to Toe with a grafted BKL .

My J12/super Julie/Fairchild Ruby has been very productive thus far.

Didn't you also fruit jack and chempa hybrid?  Put a cross of of those two on jackfruit rootstock, and you will likely have license for take off in S FL.  I think you should do that with Ben's seedlings. Good quality cross not much different from true chempedak. That would be bending rules quite a bit to achieve almost the same result.

That's a great idea.  I will try that this summer.  Bens grafted onto Jak, and chemp grafted onto Bens.

68
Thanks for the seeds Ben !  They arrived in perfect condition.

Has anyone fruited Artocarpus integer (Cempedak) in Florida? I was going to put one in ground and protect it just for fun. It seems doable. I have also seen fruiting breadfruit in homestead.

I have a chempedak growing in ground. Nowhere near fruiting and very slow growing.  It hates the spring and looks shabby until humidity kicks in during the summer.

I also have a fruiting breadfruit.

I was at food town yesterday.  They had guanabana, mangosteen, and Durian.  I got a durian - which was actually decent.  Best I've personally had.

That's a great looking tree.  I would definitely hand pollinate it.

I've had Jack and a jack x chempedak cross from Indonesia that look like your photo.  I made a post about the Jak sometime in the past.  I have one of the Jaks and the Nangedak in the ground.  A couple of years gone by now and the Jak leaves have converted to typical Jak.  Nangedak still have the odd shape.  Hopefully both will fruit in the next few years and we'll see how they are.
