Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Can I air layer this month?
« on: April 07, 2017, 04:00:09 PM »
You took off the callus tissue? The new roots should grow out of that. As long as the two sides of the bark don't bridge, it should be okay. It's okay to wrap it up and wait a few more months. Jujube took a year to root for me, just for your reference. Lychee and longan 5 months if you do it in the cool season.

It'd be better to post a few photos to show what they look like so others can guess at what's happened.

Oops , my bad :). I did not take pic since I don't know how to post it .

I checked all my airlayers, and non has roots. I am so dissapoited. The wounds seemed to heal up. I peeled off the hard white stuff and wrapped up again. Does it work or I need to choose different spot to make another rootball?

Samu,

My alano is just like your size. I heard it takes 9 months to get the fruit ripe.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What month does wax jambu flower?
« on: April 04, 2017, 01:50:41 AM »
One of mine is budding now.

How lucky you are! I wish my wax jambu can do the same.

My mom cuts off some of the growth to break the vegetative growth and maybe encourage flowering. You might try it to see if it works for you. I don't know if that method really works but seems like something you could try.

Thanks for your tips. Will try to trim all new growth tomorrow.

I 've bought 15 gallons green wax jambu for 3 years, but never flower. Two years ago, the tre died back half of the trunk from 5 ft to 2-3 ft. This year, it grows a lot of new leaves, but still no sign of bloom. Does anyone know what month it 's supposed to flower?

My mature trees' leaves always look like that? They only have normal flat leaves during flowering season.

Do you know what month is the flowering season? Especially in ca?

Will my AP survive at all? What caused the leaves turned yellow? What should I do to rescue it?

This Giant Loquat was discovered in the Mercer Arboretum in 2010. Anybody having seeds or seedlings?

Is it bigger than big Jim?

I think either the Taiwan jujube is a type of Indian jujube, or it is actually just a name for Indian jujube when sold by Taiwanese nurseries.

Is Indian jujube expensive? Taiwanese jujube is actually pretty pricey.

My mom and a couple of friends grow the Taiwanese jujube. Friends get good amount of fruit set, my mom not so much, but the plant gets pretty big when it's not setting fruits.

I know ranch99 in san diego sold indian jujube ( label As sweet jujube) at 4.99/lbs.

« on: March 09, 2017, 09:56:10 AM »
I did asked about loquat, but not jujubes. By the way, can I graft sugar cane jujube on Indian or Indian jujube on Chinese jujube?
I'm pretty sure you can't graft Indian jujube on Chinese jujube. The red one goes dormant while the green Indian one doesn't. It would probably die off the first winter. Not sure the other way around. I never tried either one. I grafted and airlayered Chinese jujube before.

Do you know how long it take to airlayer the jujube in winter? I did one in October.

Finally get to try frank's randhir today.  OMG!!! What a feast for my wife and I with this 2-3 pounder!  It was so juicy, sweet, chewy, not grainy, and big.  Seeds to flesh ratio was very good.  It was like eating 4-5 na when we were in vn.  It had all of the characteristics that I look for in an atemoya.  Such a delicious treat.  I gave the two pink mammoth my parents.  Will report back on the birula when I try it tomorrow.  I'm OD on atemoya tonight.  Thanks frank for this yummy treat.  Can't wait to get more from you when available again.

It's such a tease! Your description make me want to get this variety. Have you had this tree yet? Whenever you order the scion, call me in. I will order randhir and others that JF mentioned : Cuban fiberless , La habra Sun, ppc

I have an Apple tree on the ground for 3 years, but never produce decent crop for me. What can I graft on it? Can I graft jujube , Indian jujube, nectarines, loquat on the rootstock? Please advice.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Can you air-layer a Longan?
« on: March 07, 2017, 12:56:58 AM »

I'm not sure which part your're asking.
1. Why did he wrap the peeled branch?
I'm not sure. Maybe this keeps the cambium from bridging the gap somehow.
2. Why didn't he apply rooting powder?
It's not clear if he scraped the cambium off. If he did, there's no point in applying rooting power on the peeled area, since there's nothing there to grow roots from. If you want to apply rooting hormone, apply it on the cut at the air-layer end. It might grow fast enough that hormone is not necessary. I've never done citrus before but longan grows roots fairly quickly.

Thanks fyliu. I did the air layered on longan in OCtober, but have not seen any roots. I should open the wrapper to check inside. Maybe in two weeks.

Longan air layering is same

Do you know why he wrapped plastic around the peeled branch, instead of applying rooting powder?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anybody using 55-gallon drums for planting?
« on: February 26, 2017, 06:46:42 PM »
I bought a lot of them..Each one $ 10. They are strong and huge. Cheap for the size. So far I only have one breadfruit in those pots. But I am using them as wall in low greenhouse

Can you share where you got it and how many gallons. My husband bought me 30 gallons in bulk is about 17 each.

Hi dragon,

I found a new member molo who wants to do a joint order. You're more than welcome to do it with us.  The saving is about $25 bucks for me since I don't need all 10 scions (limit 10).  I don't even have enough rootstock to graft 10 anyways so it'll go to waste.  Which part of town are you in?  I work around the Mira Mesa area. You can stop by to pick up once the order arrive.

I'll wait until tomorrow to place the order with frank just in case other members want to join in.

I live around Mira mesa too. But can you tell me which one match with my criteria: sweet, big, and chewy? I already have African pride, red Israel and phet pakchong (I am not sure if that is real because it is not sweet. I love the big, sweet, chewy one I ate in VN, but I don't know it's name in America. Please help

I live in national city.  Just sent you a pm. Maybe we can place an order together.

I have not seen your message. You place is kind of 30 to 45 mins away from my area. What can we save when we order together? Sorry I sound silly, but just wonder

Anyone in SD still want to place an order? I only need 5 scions.  Let me know so we can do a joint order. Thanks.

What part of sd do you live? Please advise me what scion I should get. I like very sweet, chewy one. Which one I should get

99 market is a good source I grow my own and I haven't purchase any from there in a while. I don't think Peter's place is open to the public but anyone who has dealt with him in this forum will vouch for him

I went to ranch 99 often but neither saw the fruits nor trees. Do you grow your own from seedling? How long it takes to bear fruit?

124
Try the Moyas guy, Peter from Park Hill Orchard in Escondido. He has a collection of saps and sells them too. His email could be found on this thread:
http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=3729.msg61752#msg61752

Does his farm open to public? Do you have address to his location? Have you bought anything from him?

Grafting is the easiest way to propagate sapodillas. Start some seedlings are graft.

I heard seedling grows very slow. I have to buy the fruit to get the seed, but I don't see anywhere in sd sell it
