Tropical Fruit Discussion / Graft jujube to pepper tree?
« on: June 22, 2016, 12:39:11 AM »
I have a pepper tree that I want to chop down. However my sister told me someone said that jujube can be grafted on pepper tree. Please confirm.
If pepper tree is impossible, then what type of rootstock can be used to graft Chinese jujube or Indian jujube?

177
Yeah, they close after you pollinate them. They only bloom for a day. If you properly pollinated the flower and pollinated it in the morning, it will probably form a fruit! If you didn't properly pollinate, the closed flower will fall off.
Plant some flowers around so bees can pollinate for you.  When your vines grow bigger, it'll probably will attract bees automatically.

Thank you for your reply. I hope I polintaed it properly. I don't plant flower around, so I do not have bees in the garden. Well, I 'll be a beeeeeeee:)

I noticed that my lemon tree next to orange tree both have white powder on the leaves . Please help me to find what cause It. Thanks

My passion fruit vine first time has one flower. It bloomed . I hand pollinated it. The flower closed the next day. Anybody know if it is normal for passion fruit flower

181
Probably they did not get pollinated, or the stigmas were already too dry, from low-air humidity, to receive pollen.

They are just baby buds, not fully mature

182
Does anyone have any idea what cause flower buds go dry black on the tree? I plan it on 25 gallons pot.

I just bought a box of kesar mango  . It is the most expensive mango box I ever bought in my life $30.00/box. I hope it is good like everybody said . The fruits are still green, so I have to wait a few days . I wonder if I can grow this tree from seed. Do you know where I can find a tree to buy?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Going to Thailand for 10 days
« on: May 21, 2016, 10:25:34 AM »
Hi my fruit forum friends.   My wife and I are going to Thailand next week for a 10 day durian trip...  Along with much more fruit eating.   It's a tour that Lindsay Gasik (yearofthedurian.com)  is hosting and gonna be our tour guide.  I'm very excited for the trip and I'm hoping to eat my body weight in mangosteen and longkong.  Oh and durian.

My question is are there any must have fruits I can try while in Thailand that are in season?  I'm hoping to try marang and chempedak and salak and maprang and others.  But I honestly don't know if it's the right time of year for those.   If any of you out there are Thailand experts let me know!

Also I've got my usda seed permit it hand.   Any seed requests??

Hi Kona fruit fram,
How lucky you are to travel to Thailand to try all exotic tropical fruits ! Thailand is well known for Phet Pakchong, durian, long Kong , mangosteen .,,, if you can bring back home all the seeds you can that would be awesome ! Whatever seeds you bring back please include me.

How do you obtain usda sees permit? Please share me the steps and process,  so I can prepare myself before taking vacation trip to Asia country.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / seeds sprouted inside frozen soursop
« on: May 10, 2016, 05:10:07 PM »
I have a question sound stupid, but I still want to ask: can I grow frozen soursop seeds even though they have already sprouted inside? I cannot not find fresh soursop at my place, so I hope those seeds still alive to grow

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Can I graft loquat on Apple ?
« on: May 05, 2016, 01:41:08 AM »
Deagon, just read on Purdue University's (new crop resource online program) it says you can graft loquat to apple-pear-quince- pyracantha ,  quince and pyracantha being for extreme dwarfing. this is from a book by Julie F. Morton 1987 titled fruits of warm climates pages 103-108  ....i tried it before and it did not work for me could have been timing.    Patrick

Patrick,

It is a good news. I am going to try, but first I need to look for a scion from fruited tree. Unfortunately, my big Jim is still a seedling.

Argh, my Jazzy loquat is still tasting like lemon despite being the first cluster to flower this year, well before any other clusters or playstation from the areas did. One fruit left. I'll give it another half month.

Feng,

I just went to Jim's again on Monday and ate a lot more loquats, The ones I believe that were Jazzy were real good. Some of the white ones were real amazing. And some of the trees had fruit that was ripe probably a month ago, and I wasn't able to taste those.

Hi Feng,

Does Jim's  garden open to public? I really want to try out white jim and big Jim loquat.

You're welcome, I hope they are sweet for you. The sellers often do not know the variety names of the fruit they sell. The big fruit usually get bought up first. Don't be shy to ask the seller if they have more big fruit in the back. They usually put out only a portion of the prime fruit at one time so that they don't all get bought up at once.

The X large fruit are nice but don't pass up some of the smaller fruit. There are many white/beige flesh fruit that are smaller but sweeter than the orange fleshed varieties.

Simon

Simon,

I will take your tips next time. They are sweet. I don't like small one even though it sweet. I m a greedy eater. Small one don't have enough flesh for me after peeling off the skin

The Mira Mesa farmers market is every Tuesday from 3:30pm till 7pm if I remember correctly. You may also find loquat fruit at whole foods, Jimbos or Sprouts when they are in season, call first to see if they have them in stock.

Simon

I went to farmer market today and saw big loquat fruits. I bought all the big ones. I asked the seller what the variety but he did not know. Thanks Simon for showing me where to get my favorite treat.

OK Dragon, lets start over , these are seed starting bags for starting seeds  not for growing plants longterm.   they are clear plastic and you have to punch your own holes in them with a hole punch or cut the bottom corners off with sisors.     patrick

Patrick,

I got it now. However I look for grow bag like the black ones in the nursery.  Thanks for your info

Hi Dragon , if your thought is to graft it to an existing apple tree you can do that BUT you must first qraft quince to your apple then graft loquat to quince these can both be done at the same time.      Patrick

Except maybe that  ;D
I don't have quince so can I still graft loquat on Apple ?

Patrick,

I do not know if I looked at the right one, but I saw the bag look like ziplock bag rather than black grow bags in the nursery.

Dragon,

Jim does not sell any of his fruit or trees as far as I'm aware. I've seen very large fruit which I believe is likely Big Jim for sale at the Mira Mesa farmers market.

Simon

Simon,

Do you know when and where Mira Mesa farmer market open? I 'd like to go buy some loquat. I don't see any super market sell it and I do not know when my seedling big Jim will bear fruit ever

Thanks to Mark I was able to try several of the varieties collected from Jims yard and a couple of the white ones were just out of this world. The #1 and #2 white ones were so sweet, it's like comparing a Kent mango to one of the newer Zill mango varieties like Lemon Zest. Diabetics will not be able to eat number one and number two.

Now back to the topic of this thread, here is a handful of Big Jim loquats, harvested a bit early, not fully orange and not at maximum sweetness yet.

Simon

Hi Simon,

Your big loquats make me drooling! DOes Jim sell any of his fruits? Do you know his address if he selling trees or fruits? I wish I can try the big Jim and white Jim.

The seller told me loquat grows true from seed. They charged me $50 for the seedling. I don't know when it bears fruit

I went to exotic fruit nursery in Vista and got a big Jim. It is a seedling about 4 feet. The seller told me it will fruit next year but I am not sure I also saw white Jim but did not buy it because I have no clue about it. If Anyone has the chance to try white Jim please let me know if it is as big, sweet as big Jim?
