I am growing one in 30 gallons. This is the first time it flowers and fruits. I saw 4 Tiny fruitlets . I did not grow it from seed so I don't know how long it takes to set fruits. There are two types: sweet and sour. I have the sour one, based on the seller . I have to wait maybe in a few months to confirm the taste.

Haysa was one of the variety I wanted to get, but now it is out. I going to buy morena instead.

I think I going to buy morena base on  bsbullie and JF inputs. Thanks bsbullie and JF !

JF, you seem not to have much luck with haysa since everyone praise about haysa beside alano. Does Anyone have bad luck with haysa like JF. After hearing JF had 10 fruits in 6 years really make me having second thought about buying haysa.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Molix or Morena
« on: May 19, 2017, 10:12:24 AM »
I want to add another sapodillas to my collection beside makok and alano. I know I will buy Haysa, but don't know should I choose Morena or Molix. Please give me some ideas about their flavor, fruit production and fruit size. I like big, sweet and no grit for sapodillas. So which variety should I buy since I never taste those varieties.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Thai Jumbo Perfume Wax Jambu?
« on: May 16, 2017, 12:55:55 AM »
Is it sweet, Mangcau? Does it have seed? I ask because I would like to grow one if you have seed or scion  to sell? I have a rose appe, I think about grafting the scion to it. However, I am just beginner grafter, so I ask for seed too just in case my grafting not taking .
Now is not food.I can send you free sticks in march. I think you can root or graft. I failed miserably. It is not sugar sweet and can be seedy.

Mãng cầu,

Ís your thai jumbo perfume blooming right now? My bushy green wax jambu is finally blooming. I am so exciting to wait for its first fruit. Well, too early to expect for fruits since it has a few blooms. Hopefully it will mature and set at least one fruit for me to try.
I just bought a black diamond at ranch 99. Ít is blooming too. Have you tried this variety yet? Is it sweet compare to your thai jumbo perfume?

Guayaba, thanks for the website.. I ordered something from them a few years back, and it was really small for a 3 gallon (especially for their price + shipping).. can you show me a picture that you have? How is your star apple doing? Maybe I should just buy some fruit from you instead  ;D

The Caimito is doing okay.  I bought it in March and it has been outside since then.  It has a few mangled leaves from transport and it went into some shock when I transplanted it. The pot they had it in was too small for it to survive well outdoors here.  It has perked up since I re-potted it and is just now starting to grow.  I would be glad to share Caimito fruit with you  ;D.  It may take several years before it can fruit and it really is marginal, so first up is getting it to survive outdoors through winter.  Baby steps!

New Growth

My green star Apple was almost double the height of your tree. I was so happy when it bloomed. However, it did not set fruits. the winter 2015, the trunk died back more than haft of its original size.  Now it appear like a bush than a tree. I have a few blooms last year, but never made it through the cold. I have a feeling it will not never set fruits. Please let us know When you tree sets fruit

FJ,

Have I missed the fairhaven and sunset scions you posted in March? When is the next time you have the scions available? I have many WS seedlings and really want to graft the best tasty, non- bitterness variety to them.

If your plant is small, I would let it grow out so you can get more fruiting branches later in the year or next year. If your plant is full sized, you can cut them off. Once your DF tree is full sized, trim off about 1/3 of the growth after harvest so that you completely renew the tops every 3 years.

I haven't done much research on DF since about ten years ago so their may have been new data with better production techniques.

Simon

Again thanks for your advice, Simon. I will do as you recommended

Dragon, 10-52-10 is a type of ultrabloom fertilizer so it should be ok. I've used it with good success.

Simon
Thanks, Simon. What about new growth? Should I let it grow or remove it, Simon. I think you have more experience grow dr than I.

I cut back on watering in Winter and early spring and I start to give an ultra bloom type fertilizer around February. If I use an organic 0-10-10, I give it early to allow for it to break down and get to the plants. If using chemical fertilizers, just give it prior to when you expect new growth coming out of winter. If growing in pots, add rock dust in Winter around January or February then cover it with a bit of compost and the vines really take off.

If your plants are fruiting size, don't give it too much Nitrogen. I prune after harvesting fruit and then again in late winter or early Spring if needed.

Simon

I bought my red sugar last November, and it had 1 fruit. I planted it in 30 gallons and give it the grow more 10-52-10 through drip system every other day. Is it too much? I guess I have to look for new ferlizer like the one Simon mentioned

My Sugar Dragon has nice flower buds forming and American Beauty as well. I haven't checked the others but I'm guessing my Simons Purple and Halleys Comet probably has some buds as well, I just haven't looked carefully.

Simon

My sugar dragon has a lot of new growth, but no flower buds at all. Should I remove new growth, Simon? What and when you fertilize your tree?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Malay apple
« on: April 26, 2017, 11:46:46 PM »
I've seen people grow wax jambu in pots but not Malay apple.
Over here Malay Apples seem like its mostly grown from seed, I'm curious to see how much less vigor it would have grafted or as a cutting.
I had two planted, traded one away. It had a huge tap root growing straight down. I only managed to dig out 2 feet of it before it snapped.

I don't think there has been much selection on this from, same like wax jambu gets all the attention. I wish the season longer.
From what i understand is it give you a crap load a fruits for like two weeks and then nothing.
I have one in 30 gallons for almost 3 years. I don't know when it will flower. Does anyone have Malay apple in San Diego that bloom? My green wax jambu finally bring me joy when I has one flower bud . The Malay apple nearby is too stubborn to keep the flower buds to herself only. I guess I have to take  out my prunner and threaten it like I did to greeen wax jambu.

93
Yup, those are flower buds. My green wax jambu shows a tiny sign of flower buds after 3 years of waiting , not obvious like yours. Anyway, I have to wait in a few days to make sure they are truly flower buds. In the meantime, I pray and cross my finger

Citrus General Discussion / Trim kumquat leaves
« on: April 22, 2017, 11:49:59 PM »
I have 4 kumquat pots. Two of them have beautiful green, plentiful leaves. The others two have old and ugly leaves. So, I decided to trim all the leaves off. Is it a bad thing to do to the trees? Does it affect the fruiting ? Should I spray neem oil to prevent leaf miner when new leaves occur?

95
Thanks for the info Waxy, at least you confirmed they have have them. It's over a 2 hour drive each direction for me if there's no traffic. I need to find time to visit them.

I also called Ongs nursery but Quang's mom scared me off when she said they have large trees up to $2000! Yes, that's thousand!

Simon

Just stop by and talk to him instead. He might have a tree more than 200 but less than thousand too. Don't let his mom scared you off :)

Annona Reticulata "San Pablo" seeds free (PM me), will send 7 - 10 seeds. Will send seeds first then just send what I pay for shipping.
Guillermo.

Do you have the picture of the fruit? Is it a cherymoya variety ?

97
don't know if you did it but do not put fertilizer in the hole when you transplant.  I have seen many lychee trees die this way
I did not put fertilizer in the hole when I planted. However I use grow more branch 10-52-10 to fertilize it . I notice that longan, lychee show the brown tips on leaves the most. The rest, I don't see any problem. Now I only use rain water to see the brown tips disappear.

That is good news Mike, mine is about two feet right now, started flowering since almost one feet, I just pugged to develop a strong frame, by the way I'm going to receive if everything works out fine seeds of the best commercial A.Squamosa from Taiwan which is call "Taitung 1" among big size has high brix and prolonged shelves life, some of them will be flying to Australia 🌏....
So will you re sell seeds or scions later? I am interested in Taiwanese sugar apple. I hope it is sweet , big and chewy type .

99
Its probably going to be in the 200-400 range depending on how big.

Yup , expect that range even more when you go to ong nursery

100
Simon,

Go to ong nursery. He has plenty of good size. I bought one from him last year. It was 6-7 feet tall . After one year in my hand, it died off 1 of 2 branches.  Now the young leaves look very burned at the tip
