http://newscenter.lbl.gov/2004/11/05/samoas-gift-to-the-world/

Mamala tree found on the Samoan island of Savaii...and others in the area as well.

Has anyone been there or is currently living there with some on their property possibly?

I would like one of these to use as a teaching tool on why plants and conservation of ecosystems and indigenous knowledge are important for (among MANY other things) for human health!! This case was particularly important due to a drug called Prostratin that is being looked into as a treatment for HIV thanks to Paul Alan Cox's research with the indigenous people.

http://news.stanford.edu/news/2008/may7/samoahiv-050708.html (Excerpt from article below...good read!:)
"...Samoan healers, who willingly shared their knowledge with Paul Cox, an ethnobotanist who saw them prescribing a tea made from Mamala bark for patients with hepatitis-like symptoms. Cox, in turn, sent samples to the National Institutes of Health, in hopes that the bark might have antiviral properties useful in fighting some cancers. Researchers at NIH then analyzed the bark and isolated prostratin.

Prostratin belongs to a class of compounds called tiglianes, many of which promote tumor growth, so it had no initially perceived use in fighting cancer. But NIH researchers found that prostratin was not a tumor promoter and checked to see if perhaps it could help combat HIV, which is when its remarkable ability to flush out the dormant virus was discovered. Significantly, prostratin has also been found to block uptake of the purged virus, offering yet another potentially therapeutic benefit."

Seeds are EXTREMELY easy to grow (under the right light and humidity...honestly, think about how they will grow in nature...eaten and defecated out mainly by birds just on top of the soil...bird sht will not berry itself (pardon the pun) :) and clippings are not too hard. People are too quick to say things won't work. If I can get it to go then you can too. KEEP them POTTED and they will still fruit, but don't spread invasive plants in your area. Thus concludes my 2 cents.

Everything arrived in great shape. Honestly, very clean and one of the best packing jobs I have seen with only a few in each bag marked with detailed labels. Very professional job. Thanks for the extra you put in there!! Very nice!

You have to mix Noni with things. He just said edible...nothing about palatable ;) Definitely more on the Famine Food section of the Grocery Isle.

They will fruit well in a pot. No need to plant an invasive species...though if it freezes every winter it will die back x_X. Depends where you live I guess.

I'm going to try and work with above ground clippings (though I have heard that roots are the way to go before). We shall see I suppose. I appreciate a challenge anyway!

As far as online large scale seed suppliers go I'm quite fond of Top Tropicals and Tradewinds Fruit when it comes to viable seeds! They have never let me down... though they have relatively high prices. Here is hoping that some of that money is going back to the country of origin! I really like Top Tropicals information too!

I second that. Bottom is Bixa orellana (Annatto Dye) I believe. Where did the top one come from? If sown then the seed looked like what? It is hard to narrow it down without flowers and add to that the fact that it is a sapling makes it near impossible. That is my 2 cents anyways.

They grow very quick after they get a half inch tall. Trap them in a humidity chamber (plastic bag) and spread seeds on top of the soil as far apart as possible. seeds are so small but, it will be almost impossible to separate them and not have casualties if you wait too long after they germinate. x_X They will pretty much all germinate!
I say go with the above link or some other on Amazon rather than just buying 15 to 30 for 5 dollars...seems to be a common price from actual seed sellers.

Please let me know if you have any of them

Musa ingens grown in New Guinea.
Also can be found at Arfak mountains, Manokwari District at West papua province.

Planning to go there to hunt this species but, West papua are too far from my place.
And don't have friend who lives in Manokwari.
Hopefully in the near future i'll be able to go there.

I will also like some if you get them!

If you weren't so far north I would just give you some cuttings.

Arrived in great shape and nicely packaged!

I would like to identify this fruit. Please help me if anyone knows?

I Believe it is a Bunchosia sp. There are 2 common species of Peanut Butter Fruit...possibly one of those.

95
Did you get my PM/emails?

Everything arrived in exceptionally clean condition with detailed labels. Thanks for the extra seeds!! :)

What region and ecosystem is it found in naturally? That might help narrow it down a bit.
