Features i like,   Video Embed ,  Edit ( I am a terrible proof reader, and notice errors only after I post or sometimes i just forgot to add something ) and then the system that lists new messages in posts, so you know when new replies have been added.  The map is also cool, so I have a snap shot of where people are.

I picked up a couple of "geopots", from Pepe at the Yellow Green market when I was in Fla, in Dec, I used them to plant those bare rooted mango trees in.
I like the idea of how these kind of "pots" air prune the roots, and cause them to grow laterals. also better filtration and air to roots, is better for most plants.
plus since they fold, they are easy to transport in my suitcase.

I have:

Garcinia xanthochymus  pretty big, about 7ft in container, has not fruited yet.
Garcinia aristata small , but seem to be faster growers than mangostana. have about 6 of these, only inches tall though.
Garcinia mangostana, also small, biggest maybe 8 inches . have only 2 of these.

Manzano have very thin skin, this look to have thicker. by coincidence, the bunch I got last week that I thought were manzano, look exactly like these you have, I have a video of them, but haven't finished editing.  they are some kind of variation on what they call "Rulo" around these parts.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Giant Papaya Tree ( Video test )

Yes mura, I filmed this last weekend, while visiting a friends new farm he just got. I asked someone locally, they tell me its been some time since this tree has produced any fruit.  it even looks bigger in person.

Most people just cut them down when they stop producing fruit, since the farm hasn't been in use for a while I guess no one was around. I am glad they didn't. heck the thing is still alive too.

Which reminds me, I'll ask my friend to not chop it down.

Seems the land there is really fertile, the banana trees are also huge, I even snagged me a bunch of manzanillo bananas, not sure what they are called in the states, these are the small thin skinned types with a apple-ish taste. anyway I filmed all that also, I will try and get those clips edited and uploaded soon.

I read that the Oro Negro variety was a seedling also, believed to be a Haas crossed with another tropical variety, its possible your neighbor has a similar type.  I am looking for a tree like that, an avocado that has a high oil content that grows well in the humid tropics.

Hello Folks,  this is the same Tropicdude from the gardenweb forum.  real name is William. I am a Florida native, that lives and works in the Dominican Republic.

I do not have a lot of land to work with, so most of my plants are in containers, my dream is to get a few acres and fill it up with tropical fruit trees.

My profession is telecommunications,  and I work at a Cable TV company, as head tech in charge of the headend.

recently I have been loaned some land where i have planted around 3 dozen or so papaya plants,  and will start adding a few mango trees on that lot also ( running out of room in my back patio ).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What matters to you in a mango variety?
« on: January 18, 2012, 01:59:37 PM »
Taste is obviously the most important, then Disease resistance.  the other factors would be important depending on particular needs.

If you have a lot of land, tree size may not matter much, and if your selling your fruit, having a productive tree, with attractive fruit would be important.

One thing not listed, is fruiting season, it would be nice to have a great mango that produces fruit in the winter for example.

So for personal use, 1) flavor 2) disease resistance 3) Size
For orchard use  1)Flavor 2)Productivity 3) Color and disease resistance.
